12 oz. bottle dated enjoy by 5/18/15, consumed 2/6/15. Pours a dark amber-brown with a couple fingers of foamy off-white head. Decent retention and good lacing.

Aroma is a good balance of malt and hops. Chocolate malts are pretty evident with a big, roasty flavor. Actually, this is a fairly complicated malt bill; aside from the chocolate and spicy rye, there's a decent caramel kick as well. Malts dominate, but barely; a distinctive Citra citrus hoppiness along with some pine resin also comes through. There's something else in there giving big, earthy, tobacco and grassy flavors that seems quite bizarre, but very appealing.

Flavor mostly follows the nose, but a lot cleaner and crisper than expected. Spicy (hoppy and rye) and floral with a decent amount of Citra hoppiness. Dark malts are neither astringent nor chalky, but nonetheless give a decent roasty flavor. Very clean and well-balanced finish.

Medium body and moderately carbonated. Crisp, refreshing, yet substantial.

I can't believe I didn't try this when it came out last winter (or spring, or "in-between-seasons" as Summit calls it). Very well-balanced and also in-between-styles, but delicious and frighteningly drinkable. Worth a shot.

Picked this up as part of a mixed six-pack.
Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a nonic pint.

Pours a lovely coppery red with a substantial amount of lasting, foamy head. Really a lovely ale.

The smell may be the highlight of this beer. Rye bread all the way with perhaps an underlying fruity note from the hops.

The taste did not quite deliver on the promise of the aroma. Still, very tasty. The rye is not as strong on my tongue as it was on the nose but it still very present and bready. There is a nice balance with the sweetness from the malt, a little bit of fruit/citrus from the hops and then a bitter little kick at the finish.

The mouthfeel is nice, although not outstanding. Perhaps a slight creaminess.

All in all, a quality brew that is VERY easy to drink. Well done.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

Deep brassy hue, clear with a good sudsy lacing. Full on rye jacket is toasty and spicy throughout. Just enough hop bitterness with some floral and soft citrusy flavor. One of the better Rye Beers I've had in a while.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Pint.

Appearance: Somewhat dark amber-copper with decent off-white head.

Smell: Massive rye aroma, with light biscuit, caramel and citrus.

Taste: Bready and spicy rye right out of the gate, with some semi-sweet caramel malts to round out the backbone. Light but sharp citrus adds an extra layer that lingers at the finish, along with more spiciness. Bitterness is low.

Feel: Moderate carbonation with medium body that is just slightly on the thin side. Mostly dry finish.

Overall: Certainly not as good as the old India Rye Ale from the Unchained Series (this one isn't as IPA like), but still a solid addition to Summit's lineup and also a nice lower abv choice for the depressing late winter months.

Had on tap. Pours brilliant brown with a spicy nose with a touch of roast. The palate is creamy with light roast, a hint of chocolate and spicy rye flavors. Medium body and carbonation. Tasty and drinkable.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall Summit pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep brownish amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of off white head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: A toasty and nicely spicy malt forward aroma with big hints of rye spice, caramel, and slight citrus. Pale and toasted malt with upfront hints of biscuit, grains, caramel, toffee, toasted bread, chocolate, and cracker. Huge scent of rye spice throughout. Mild hop presence with some earthy and floral hints and some light hints of citrus orange and lemon zest. A pretty good aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma hints at, a spicy, toasty, and lightly fruity malt driven taste with lots of rye spicing and caramel. Pale and toasted malts with some good notes of biscuit, grains, toast, caramel, toffee, chocolate, coffee, and crackers. Big taste of the rye spicing dominates. Hops in the background with some floral and earthy notes. Citrus fruit notes of orange and some lemon zest. A very solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Nicely spicy and creamy with a smooth drying finish.

Overall: A really good new Rye beer from Summit. Really nice rye spice presence with some good subtle notes of fruit and chocolate.

Summit "Frost Line Rye"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "ENJOY BY 05/08/15"

Summit's "Frost Line" delivers a rich, darkly caramelish and malty ale with a fairly distinct note of spicy rye, and some gently citrusy hops in the background. It's not particularly strong as a winter ale at just 5.8% abv., but it also follows on the heels of their standard "Winter Ale" at a slightly more respectable 6.2%, so that kind of makes sense; and it's full-flavored, and satisfying enough that it's name shouldn't need to be questioned once tasted. A solid bitterness backs it to the point that it's bitter and dry while still allowing the malt to stand out with just an edge of sweetness which is blanketed by a light cloak of floral and mildly citrusy hops, and then ultimately balanced and livened by the spiciness of the rye. Nicely done!

Pours an effervescent copper a billowy 3 finger cream colored head. Good lacing & head retention

S: Some pepper & graininess

T: Nice rye pepperiness up front, along with a little of caramel& dryness. Slight astringent notes as this warms, grain husks, white pepper, a whisper of pine & orange peel & dryness, plus grassy notes. Finishes dry, crisp with nice rye snap.

MF: Medium bodied, firm carbonation, pretty nice balance

Pretty easy to drink, nothing mind-blowing here. Hell I'd probably prefer this in the warmer months. Makes me think "poor-man's" red's rye substitute

Summit finally answered the calls of the fans of their India Rye Ale. Hope this lives up to the greatness of that beer.

Dark amber brown color with one finger of head that had good retention. Some spotty lacing is left down the glass.

A lot of rye in the aroma. Gives a nice spicy, rustic aroma. I also pick up some ginger bread cookie with a hint of cocoa. Has a very good malt aroma, but the hops are giving a rather disappointing showing. Mild citrus and herbal notes is all.

Wonderful rye malt flavor. Spicy, peppery, and bready. A lot of more subtle malt flavors as well. Such as cocoa and ginger. I believe Summit and Citra was the two hops used in the IRA, so not sure why they do not impress as much in this beer. I do pick up orange peel and citrus, but also some garlic and onion. Moderate bitterness.

Medium body and wonderfully carbonated. Impressive texture that is smooth, yet lively.

It has been four years since the India Rye Ale so I cannot make a direct comparison. This one just does not impress me as much. Maybe the way the brewer used the Summit hops in this beer did not suit my tastes. Still a lot of impressive rye flavor to be had.

"Food Pairings: Pairs nicely with jerk chicken and pork, south Indian curry, pepper jack cheese and Irish Salmon."

A - Plenty of carbonation can be seen streaming through the clear, robust copper-colored beer feeding it's firm ivory head. Lace runs down the glass like curtains further adding to the beauty of this beer!

S - Frost Line is not the least bit shy with how much rye malt it contains as it's spicy character is powerfully expressed; grainy with little earthy hop presence pushing past the bready malt base to the nostrils but, that's ok. This beer is plenty inviting as is.

T - A dash of chocolate malt adds dusty cocoa notes to the bready base of Frost Line Rye but, as the nose suggests, it's the rye malt that remains front and center with it's sharp spicy flavor. Earthy hops come forward in flavor, complimenting the rye nicely and leveling out the beer for a round flavor profile.

M - Initially a touch thin, Frost Line Rye maintains smoothness on the tongue, filling out on the swallow but the combination of rye and hops take the beer for a turn. Spice and bitterness are cast out like salt to thin the malty base.

O - RyePA is a common beer name going around but Frost Line Rye is neither play on words nor a hoppy style. This is a down-n-dirty rye beer, smooth in body but harsh in aroma and flavor with relentless rye character that brings spice throughout and doesn't hold back. A nicely balanced beer though, it drinks wonderfully for the few cold months we have left ahead of us.

A: The beer is crystal clear yellowish amber in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that died down, leaving a patch of bubbles on the surface, a collar around the edge, and some acing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of bready and rye malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and mimics the flavors of rye bread, except that it doesn't seem quite as filling as if you were eating a slice of bread. A light amount of spiciness and bitterness lingers through the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The rye lends a little bite to the finish.
O: This beer doesn't seem nearly as spicy as other rye beers but there is a nice contrast between the different type of malts that are used. It is very easy to drink.

Dark amber, 1 inch slightly off-white head. Dissipates fairly slowly with some lacing. Odor is very good, a bit grassy, with subtle spice. Relatively highly carbonated. Bitter hoppy initial taste and bitter aftertaste. This is quite a bitter beer - a spicy bitter, but still bitter. Substantial mouth feel, with a difficult to describe malt foundation behind the spicy bitterness.

Pours out a clear bronze shade with some nice white suds. Right out of the bottle, it’s pretty hoppy – floral and herbal, but with a minute or so in the glass becomes very malty. The rye is obvious and it also smells chocolately. Enjoying this.

As I a take a sip, the first thing that stands out is the mouthfeel – good body, somewhat chewy with tranquil carbonation.
Flavor took a little longer to get a handle on. Herbal oregano-like hop bitterness, earthy rye, somewhat roasted. A bit of chocolate/nutty flavor. Lots of lingering bitterness on the finish. On the dry side.

Nice for something different - like it, but don’t love it. But no one should be complaining about not being able to taste the rye in this beer. I see one more 6pack in my future.

Poured into an IPA glass.

Look: A nice mahogany color with ruby tint. A light cream colored head retains well, leaving a soapy film. Thick and airy lines of lacing.

Aroma: Malted barley rye, toasted grains, some oak woodiness.

Taste: Very woodsy and dry, a good dose of rye malts. Some subtle bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Nice weight to it with a dry, clean finish.

Overall: A really dry beer, clean on the palate.

A: Chestnut brown body with nice clear visibility and a thin lip of oatmeal khaki suds. Decent stay to it but fairly mellow and inactive as it settles to a thin film. Light swaths of lace are strewn about the glass after every gulp.

S: Dry roast coffee bean up front with some piney hops, toasted biscuit, cocoa and Rye spice. Has a real greenness to it that is very earthy and fresh with some undercurrents of orange flesh. Not too stand out but enjoyable none the less.

T: Flavors bring toasted brown malts with a grainy like nuttiness, some Rye spice, dark caramels, and a light hop bitterness. I get lots of dry roast coffee and a dusting of cocoa with some orange zest and pine. Toasty, nutty, and dry earthy roast is smooth adding a nice compliment to the Rye. Not ever sharp or astringent just very smooth with the alcohol kept in good check. This is a fairly nice drinker.

M: Moderate body with a smooth and creamy froth action. Low to moderate bitters lend to a nice drying finish. Has a very clean exit and good balance overall.

D: A tasty little seasonal. I really didn’t know what to expect with this one. The Rye is fairly mellow to me but complimented well by the other components of citrusy hops and coffee/chocolate roast malts. Nothing spectacular but a nice Winter brown ale for sure.

Pours a brownish copper with a finger of head that dissipates fairly quickly but leaves a touch of lace on the glass. The nose has mild rye notes, but I also swear that I get a hint of nuttiness as well. The body is a touch lighter than I expected, but it is still in the appropriate range for the style. The rye notes are evident and the finish has a nice semi-dry bitterness to it.

This would make for a solid session ale, but I think that a fall release would be more appropriate than a winter release.

It looks : creamy, fizzy cap on top, about 2 fingers. Off-white. Body is a dark "root beer barrel" candy caramel color.

It smells : Hop comes out first in a big way, with baked dark grains (presumably rye?) trailing behind it. More lemon peel like hop at the end.

It tastes : Caramel malts in a big way, yet appropriately balanced by an abundance of hop. It's a powerful beer all around - powerful malt and powerful hop. Bread crusts, spiced hop, coriander, more caramel breadiness. A touch of brown rice. Somewhat rotten in overall flavor though.

Mouthfeel : medium bodied, creamy, appropriately carbonated. Ends semi dry.
Overall : it's a little different, but I guess that's the point. I don't think I'd have it again, it is a little off-putting. A bit dark and garbagey, the malts are a tad on the rotten side and the hop is pretty intense. Meh.

Pours a cloudy, dark brown color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of rye, sweet malt, hint of roasted malt, slight hop, hint of caramel malt, and a hint of grass. Fits the style of a Rye Beer. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, rye, slight roasted malt, hint of grass, hint of hop, and a hint of caramel malt. Overall, good appearance, decent aroma, and decent blend.

Coppery amber hue topped off by a khaki skien. Lacing is prevalent. Odors of amber malt, hints of cut sod and dry straw. Taste pricks the tongue with citrus, characteristic rye pepper and a bitterness of the aforementioned hop smothered over a crackers and biscuits backbone. Medium to light body with crisp carbonation. Presents interesting elements that I can enjoy but altogether this beer doesn't stand out from the crowd.

Pours a deep but transparent brown. Plenty of lacing.

Aroma of grainy rye. Then citrus. Pleasant but very subtle.

Tastes of earthy grains followed by citrus notes. Taste and nose are very similar.

Crisp, dry mouthfeel.

Assuming this is a spring seasonal and it is fitting.

A: Pours a ruby amber color with a finger of soft, light tan head that faded into a fuzzy film.
S: Grapefruit and citrus hops, with hints of floral hops and spicy and bready rye notes.
T: Rye bread and spice mixes well with hoppy notes of grapefruit, doughy yeast, and flowers. The finish has a bitter touch alongside the rye spice, and the aftertaste is lightly sweet and fruity.
M: Clean light mouthfeel, medium-light body, soft carbonation, slick.
O: A very flavorful and delicious rye beer. Tastes like a rye pale ale or ipa. Very clean and delicious, but not overbearing. Could easily drink a bunch of these in a night. Thanks again Matthew!

Deep ruby-copper color, small, uneven, airy head. Smell is pine and oak, and maybe plastic. Taste is bitter and resinius, earthly sweet but spiced. Lemony hops compliment the spicy rye and char.

Very bitter, almost to its detriment.
