Appearance: highly hazed, bright golden hue, slim white head, short but lasting. Very inviting.
Aroma: soft and subtle, but enticing. Notes of tropical fruit, some citrus, light spices. Beautifully delicate, hoppy nose.
Taste: Hops hit harder once the meet the tongue. Nice bitter bite, with notes of pineapple, grapefruit, and pepper. Nice lemony squirt in the flavor. Hop notes last long through consumption. Malt body is on the light side, and it's an easy-drinking affair, all the way.
This one is name after an Australian style that's a bit deceiving and inevitably caused some consumer confusion. What does "Sparkling Ale" mean, does it really "sparkle", is it effervescent like champagne, etc., etc?? No, that's just the poetic appellation they applied in Adelaide in the 1800's due to it's brightness. "Southern Cape" refers to the origins of the ingredients: Gairdiner Pale Malt from Australia, Sebastian Caramel Malt from Chile, Waimea hops from New Zealand, Southern Passion hops from South Africa, all from the bottom of the world. 4,4% Alc. by Vol., 45 IBUs.

Pours a clear, gold color. One inch head of a white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of pale malt, wheat, hint of hop, hint of floral, hint of herb, and a hint of citrus. Fits the style of an American Pale Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of wheat, slight hops, hint of floral, pale malt, cream, and a hint of citrus. Overall, good appearance, but weak on hops, and too much cream flavor in the body.

Head froths up from the bottle even before I pour anything. Pours a huge, frothy, whipped head that has really great persistence. Soft, citrus hop aroma. Hazy, straw color. Starts with a very bright, citrus/floral hop flavor. A medium bitterness. Some sweet malt starts to come through, then back into fruity citrus notes which transform into citrus rind bitterness in the finish.
This is interesting. It's a fruitier, lighter take on a pale ale.

I'm a sucker for any beer that uses the descriptive "Sparkling" on the label, so that's what influenced my purchase of this one. That descriptive baffles because there is a fair amount of cloudiness in the pour, but what do I know? I'm also not sure what distinguishes the various southern hemisphere ingredients used to brew this product; I mean, can anyone really identify Australian malts and New Zealand hops? I do know that another "Sparkling Ale", the classic from Cooper's, is brewed with their own, patented malts, and that beer is also known for its cloudiness, so maybe that's where this beer gets its name and its behavior. I've enjoyed the two 12 oz. bottles I've sampled, although the aroma fades quickly and the beer's appearance suggests a longer lasting palate. Enjoyable but not entirely memorable.

Straw color, perhaps a bit darker than "straw" might indicate, but still pale. Hazy with quite a bit of carbonation, nice head, white, good lacing and retention. Hops evident in the aroma. Initial taste is crisp hops, transition to some malts, but still hops are more evident, then a bitter finish. Low ABV is good if you plan on having several. Enjoyable, but not my favorite from Summit.
