Summit brewery, Over the past three year's or so their beer is something I never tend to reach for. Even the $5.99 prices never seem to tempt me until now. Just had to try the Marzen \ ocktoberfest again for the first time in about 7 year's.
Smell - Very nice pale, caramel , munich and that nutty \ bock smell of the fresh malt's which I'm probably only getting because I live in Illinois and it just reached the shelves in the local liqour stores. Much better than I remembered than in the past offering's.
Appearance - You're basic marzen \ bock like deep amber color with a decent head to boot. Some nice lacing as well.
The taste - Starts out with a sweet and almost neutral flavor between the malt and hop's, very nice balance going on here, definately a skilled hand with brewing process. It then manages to get sweet and that ozone fresh hoppiness going back and forth till the almost but not quite cloying maltiness seem's to creep in and then become overtaken ever so slightly by the noble hop bitterness to round out the sweetness. Again, very nice.
This could and should maybe be called a bock as the taste seemed to be definately of the bock style. However I will not let that ruin the excellent review of this fine brew.
I was not the biggest Summit fan up until the last couple of month's or so. Mabye I'm getting older and my palette is changing , or they are tweaking their beer's to keep up with the big gun's of the micro industry, either way, give their brew's another chance because they seem to be achieving better quality and flavour's thruought their entire line.

I really like this beer. After landing in MN. This was in the fridge at the hotel. Great taste, no linger, easy to drink. Marzen style drinkers will like this beer. A little on the front end that I don't care for, but that fades pretty rapidly. Label could use an upgrade, looks like a production beer.

I find myself trying every Oktoberfest and pumpkin flavored beer I can get me hands on, this one was pretty good! I am a easy going critic as I enjoy just about every beer I've had so... saying that, I still feel there was something missing here. I wish I could place it with words but don't yet have the beer vocabulary to do so. Overall very drinkable though!
