Poured from 12 oz. bottle into pint glass.

A: Pours really dark brown, almost black. Almost no head at all, with small amount of lacing.

S: Coffee and cocoa. This beer smells more bitter and less sweet.

T: Obviously, this tastes of bitter chocolate and coffee, but then at the finish something else comes through. Sweet? Spicy? This is surprising because it contrasts so much with the intitial reaction to scent and taste.

M: Neutral. This beer does nothing to offend the mouth, nor anything special to dazzle either.

D: Excellent. Very easy to drink and goes well with most food.

I have been drinking this beer for over ten years now, and it has never let me down. I consider it to be my go to Porter, and the base that I start to evaluate other Porters.

Best by date Dec 10. Pours a very dark mahogany color. There's a nice head that lasts for quite a while and leaves lace all the way to the bottom of the glass. Smell is of chocolate and coffee. Taste is very much the same, very quaffable.

Definitely a great porter here, not "big" but just right.

12oz stubby bottle courtesy of the monk...

Poured nearly opaque black with only hints of caramel highlights. Head was light brown and about a half inch think reducing to a thin layer and leaving nice lacing on the way down.

Aroma is of nice roasted flavors with hints of chocolate and maybe a touch of oatmeal. Also a bit of flowery hops in the background.

Taste is mostly dark chocolate with a bit of oatmeal and lightly roasted nuts. A very sharp refreshing taste. Mouthfeel is very nice as it coats well and has a full, heavy, creamy feeling on the tounge. Makes me want another, which is totally possible since this sits relatively light on the old acid bag.

A very well done porter and worth a taste.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Pours an opaque black with a dense tan head that leaves some light lacing all the way down the glass.

The aroma is bready and roasted malts, maybe a little roasted coffee and nuts as well.

Wonderful taste with rich, roasted malts tasting of chocolate and roasted coffee and a little bit of dark fruit. There is a nice, slight hoppy finish.

The mouthfeel is creamy and rich.

Overall, I think this is an outstanding porter.

Really like the graphics on the bottle. Pours a coffee brown with a russet tint. Great aroma - roasty-toasty, dark bready malt, faint spicy hoppiness - spent a good half minute smelling it. If they made candles in this scent I'd buy a box of 'em.

The taste follows through big time. Really hits the notes I like in a "regular" porter - great dark malt flavors all over the place, chocolate and black patent malts seem to be in equal balance, along with a silky, almost oatmeal-stout-like flavor along with some muted toffee and a dryish, mellow bitterness. So freaking clean. The finish is dry, with roasted malt spiciness/aromatics/whatever that is, and again very clean. Medium-light mouthfeel.

I could see a case of this in my fridge if I ever get the opportunity. Solid, incredibly drinkable and tasty porter. Beers don't have to be huge to be damned tasty. Thanks to BA JeffKrenner for the bottle!!

I had a pint on tap at The Drafting Room in Spring House PA and was very impressed. It came out a beautiful deep brown/black color, capped with a nice head that gave way to some pretty lacing as it went down. The Great Northern gave off some nice malt and coffee notes as I brought it up to taste. The flavor was wonderfully balanced and nicely hopped with more coffee coming through. Smooth all the way with very nice finish. A great beer.

Thanks once again to Feloniousmonk for this brew.

Tan, bubbly, dimpled head sits atop a sea of black.

Smells of smoky malt and coffee.

Tastes like espreso. Sweet, smooth and very tasty.

Smooth! Goes down increibly easy. A tastey porter that is not overwhelming.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is full of chocolate and roasted malt, with a hint of sweetness. The flavor is very nice. I get some bitter chocolate notes, as well as a hint of chocolate and some roasted malt. The beer is fairly sweet, with some brown sugar notes coming through in the flavor. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice porter.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into tall glass.

Appearance: Extremely dark opaque brown (pretty much black) with very foamy tan head that leaves nice lacing lines.

Smell: Major roasted malts with an emphasis on chocolate. Smells dry, almost slightly sour.

Taste: Very dry roastiness with notes of chocolate and coffee. Ends with a strong English, somewhat metallic and even slightly citrusy, bitterness. A slight sweetness becomes apparent as it warms.

Feel: Moderate carbonation and relatively light body for the style. Quite smooth and finishes very dry.

Drinkability: This is one of the best Porters in terms of simple drinkability.

In my opinion, this is Summit's best year round offering.

A-Pours a clear black with 2 fingers of thick tan head that laces the pint glass.

S-Toasted/burnt barley malt.

T-Definitely some dark malt in here, hints of burnt coffee giving a bitter finish.

M-Medium bodied (malty not creamy) and carbonated. Watery finish.

D-Ok, but I don't think I want another.

O-Nothing special here, 1 dimensional, not very flavorful or complex.

Black with a thin caramel head that lasted the life of the beer, although it faded a little. The aroma was bitter chocolate, roasted malt with slight coffee tones. The taste was more roasted malt with hints of chocolate. Mouthfeel was full, yet smooth and the taste never dissipated. I am impressed with what I have sampled from Summit thus far.

Pours deep brown with ruby highlights and a gorgeous creamy tan head that lingered until the last sip. Aroma is very subtle with notes of chocolate and roast malts and an interesting hop profile of grass and flowers. Probably a combination of English and noble hops. Taste is bursting with that wonderful malt character of chocolate and roast with a hint of smoke. Moderate hop bitternes balances the sweetness with the same interesting hop flavors as described in the aroma. Kind of reminds me of a grassy-wildflower summer meadow. What this beer lacks in a thinner mouthfeel actually makes up for it in drinkability. I could have several of these, especially at under 5% ABV. However, I would classify this more as an English porter rather than American due to its thinner body and hop profile. Anyhoo, this beer is tasty and I look forward to the next one.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into pint glass.

Appearance: Very dark brown that shows some ruby red when held up to light. Small creamy white tan head that slowly fades to a white film. Decent lacing.

Smell: Dark roasted malts with a strong aroma of coffee and chocolate. Slight citrus hops in the background.

Taste: Malt sweetness and coffee followed by chocolate and light earthy hop bitterness. Hints of smoke in the background.

Mouthfeel: Medium body and carbonation. Creamy and smooth.

Overall: A very good porter with great balance.

What a suprise this stuff was, thanks to Minnesota Nick for turning me on to it.

Good deep brown almost black appearance, excellent lacing. Aroma a little sweet. Taste, more sweetness, very hoppy by Summit standards (or midwest), good heft to the chocolate malt. Mouthfeel, hops rescind a little, but its all good. A solid beer, and relatively inexpensive.

This is a really nice Porter -- even better on tap. Though its not my fav, its availability in Minnesota makes it my "test" Porter...Nice opaque deep amber, smooth maltiness and nice roasted finish with little fade. Subtle sweetness and surprising body for the style. There's a little hop tang, but much more understated than the other Summit warm-fermenters. Mouthfeel suffers from a graininess and lack of fullness. Summit does a pretty good rendition again. Nice stuff...

Appears a very dark chocolate hue tone that lets just a bit of light through forms a big billowing light tan head leaves even rings of lacing. Aroma has dark powdered cocoa tones, mild coffee, and herbal hops intact with a soft creamy marshmellow layer. Taste contains moderate bitterness from the combonation of herbal hops and dark roasted malts which also give off creamy cappucino coffee notes and finishes with a dry dark chocolate flavor profile. Mouthfeel is medium bodied creamy textured evenly carboanted very smooth textured. Drinkability for this brew is great, one smooth and flavorful porter adding to Summit's stand up reputation, I think with this one in the sampler could probably pursuade me to pick one up I'm also a fan of their pils and pale.

This is a nice dark sweet and smooth porter. This is not an over do it type of porter. This is well balanced for smoothness. So what goes with this dark smoothie? I would listen to either Miles Davis Bitches Brew recording or Queen Latifah's Dana Owen cd.
