Poured from bottle into a ping glass

Appearance – The beer pours a golden amber color with a thick two finger head of a pure white. The head is quite stable, hanging around for quite some time, before eventually fading to leave a decent level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer big and bready with tons of a doughy smell. Some sweeter aromas of a caramel and toffee nature join the bready aromas. A light bit of graininess as well as some very light hoppy aromas of a grassy and earthy nature are there as well, creating a overall rather smooth bock aroma.

Taste – The taste begins big and doughy with lots of caramel sweetness right from the start. As the taste advances some lighter fruit flavors sweeten the brew even more with tastes of apple and apricot hitting the tongue. While very sweet and bready upfront, the flavor gets even more so on both fronts as the taste moves on to the end. This increase in the two bulk flavors is accompanied by the arrival of some lighter grassy and hay like tastes, which actually very efficiently calm the big sweeter flavors of the brew, and overall complement them very nicely. With the mix of sweet, bready, and light grassy hop flavors that is left on the tongue at the end, a rather pleasant and moderately robust maibock flavor (at least for a 6.5 % abv. brew) is left to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is very thick and creamy for a brew of only 6.5 % abv with a carbonation level that is rather average. The thick and creamy body really give this beer a mouth coating feel which highly accentuates the sweeter and doughy flavors of the brew all while the average carbonation level is quite nice for keeping it very easy drinking.

Overall – This was a very big flavored and rather tasty easy drinking maibock at a decent abv. I rather enjoyed this one and would certainly recommend it to others.

12oz bottle into a FW Imperial nonic glass
Notes from 03/09/14

Thanks to Mid for this

A: Light hazy blonde body with a hint of caramel color. Massive bone white meringue on top. Settles out to a thick halo of suds leaving behind a gorgeous sheet of sticky lace in its wake.

S: Smells of grainy malt and caramel cracker. Wheat or Pilsner perhaps with a touch of honey sweetness. Grassy hops and a few earthy minerals come out in the aromas as well. Nice and clean with some good quality ingredients.

T: Taste is very smooth and balanced all around. Malted grain cracker with some dry grass and earthy hop bitterness. Has a slight Pilsner like quality to it. Hint of honey malt sweetness to the beer and I find the alcohol to be completely incorporated. This bock comes off very well crafted. Very clean, refreshingly crisp, and really well balanced.

M: Smooth and moderate to light body with a nice even level of carb. Touch of peppery bitterness. Nice drying frothiness towards the finish. Ends up a touch on the watery side of things but does not detract from my enjoyment.

D: A very drinkable warm weather bock. Light and crisp with some firm malt presence and nice hop bitterness. Really well done like I am finding most of Summits brews. Without flaw. Would have again.

Cracking open the bottle of Summit's Maibock, I did a straight pour right into a tulip glass. Tulip glasses enhance the aroma and allow ample light in to review color, they are my first choice for reviewing.

The beer was a deep gold color I estimate about 12-14 SRM with a very pleasant floral and malt mix on the aroma, it had a nice 2 finger off-white head that lasted several minutes before falling to a standard ring at the edges of the glass.

I tasted the beer, and what a wonderful balance of what I am pretty sure are Hallertau hops (some of my favorite) and pale malts with a hint of light caramel malts. The balance between the specialty grains, regular malts and hops was exquisite, and pleasantly surprising! It is quite possibly the best balanced beer I've ever tasted.

The feeling in your mouth was wonderful, light and airy with a bit of heft that let you know you were drinking a hearty beer, but it wasn't trying to kill you.

Overall I highly enjoyed this beer, it had a lot of what I love in beers, good specialty malts, great hop selection, and a superb overall job.

Reviewed from notes. Served in a shaker pint.

A foamy, white mass about a half finger in width dies quickly and barely covers the cap of this pale-gold beer.

The smells are clean and include some biscuit malt, sugary sweetness, and a bit of cereal grain.

I am surprised by the herbal and slightly sweet flavors out of the gate. Then comes some cardamom, earthiness, cereal grain, and a little bit of roast on the back end. These flavors are having a hard time meshing for me. I like the effort, just not what these profiles taste like all together.

This is another failing of this beer sadly.. This beer was watery thin, and even a little off putting. The finish is very dry and hard to get through.

Again, the downfall of this beer begins and ends with the mouth feel. It is also disappointing that this beer is entirely too grainy, and not malty enough for a bock.
