I'm pouring this in my Duvel goblet, to great effect. It pours a cream colored head of a full two inches on top of a black cherry colored body. Little to no visible carbonation. Lacing now and then.
Pretty good aroma, hoppy and crisp. Piney, seems Cascade dominated. Crystal malts. More interesting malt notes are buried way in there. Caramel and hints of cocoa.
This is a somewhat hop-forward red ale, but despite sufficient quantities of hops, it's not a standout profile. Piney cascades on top of caramel/crystal malts. Bitterness lingers and is apparent throughout, but that's pretty much the one dimension of the hops. I actually think it could have used more maltiness. As is, it comes across as not being too far from a SNPA, so I would have liked more balance. Near total lack of sweetness doesn't appeal to me.
This is a really average feel with nothing much to say about it. Better after repeated swirls flatten it out. On the full side, I guess.
Summit beers are smartly in a price niche underneath the Bell's, Founders, and Goose Islands that dominate locally, so if they nailed a beer or two, they'd have a regular place in my fridge. This just falls short somewhere along the way, though. It's easy to jump to the conclusion that this has cheaper ingredients, but I can't say if that's the reason this isn't so great. I can see this beer having fans, but I'm a bit weary halfway through. I'm not sure how this is such a slog when there's not really any major flaw. Just not my style and won't be a repeat buy, even if the price is favorable.

Red Ale pours a dark reddish color, with a nice lacing head. There is a nice sharp malty aroma, with good hop notes. Taste is the same, good bold malty backbone, with a nice noticeable sharp bite near the end. Nice feel, and a nice carbonation feel. Overall its a nice flavorful red.
