Enjoyed after a long night of drinking lambic and gueuze... time to change pace with an IPA. Thanks to Jeff for cracking this one. Looks like burnt gold bars as it pours out into the glass, cloggy and obscure with barely any head at all, kind of surprising for an IPA. The weak, thin white skin that blankets the beer only lasts for a minute or so before it's gone for good.

Nice aroma of honey, dank and earthy hops, a mild incision of citrus peels, and an undercut of some toasty and bready malt sweetness. There isn't quite so much going on here, but the execution is very nice... Simple, yet refined in such a way that grabs your attention with the first whiff and keeps it throughout the entirety of the brew. Not explosive, but definitely solid.

The taste follows right along, with a good bit of bitterness up front that grazes the tongue softly with hoppy leaves and grapefruit peels coming hand in hand. A few more sips reveal a more juicy and less pithy citrus character that bodes well with the leafy and borderline piney character of the hops. Very crisp malt in the finish with a good amount of balancing sweetness; toasted crackers and bread.

Medium bodied, surprisingly high carbonation for such awful head formation. It snaps on the tongue with each gulp and leaves your palate pretty dry and not as resin-y as you may think. Nothing here that's gonna blow your mind or make you run out and buy a couple cases, but the balance in this brew is really nice, and you can put it down like Aquafina as a result.

The beer pours a golden color with a white head. The aroma is full of resin notes as well as some biscuit malt and a hint of orange citrus. The flavor is very similar. I get some dry, resin notes and a hint of biscuit malt. The beer is very "sticky" and there is a medium amount of bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice IPA.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Clear, light amber with moderate off-white frothy head and minor lacing.

Smell: Very tropical, with mango, pineapple and grapefruit. Some spiciness and pine.

Taste: More balanced than the aroma, but the same tropical hoppiness comes through, with grapefruit and mango mostly. Underneath the hops is a persistent semi-sweet toasted body. Finish has some pine along with the grapefruit, and is moderately bitter.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, medium body, very dry finish. Smooth but slightly thinner than expected.

Overall: I was under the impression that this was very similar to the Silver Anniversary IPA. Not really. It may have similar specs, but the different hop profile makes all the difference; this one is certainly more tropical. It is equally delicious and smells better, but the body seems slightly thinner and less creamy. Regardless of comparisons, this is an outstanding, everyday, lower-priced IPA. Fantastic job, Summit! Between this and the new Summer Ale (and the continuing Unchained Series), they have really stepped up their game.

A bottle with a BB date of 8/17/13 poured into a pint glass appears pale golden with a finger of white fluffy head that doesn't have much staying power but sticks to the glass.

I love the aroma of this beer. Hop notes of grapefruit and mango are strongest. There is also a nice clean malt aroma here that has a touch of sweetness. If the taste as is good as the aroma I'm going to love this beer.

Unfortunately for me the taste of the hops is more pine tree like and resiny. The malt is still very clean and has a nice subtle sweetness but is overpowered by the bittering hops.

Mouthfeel of this beer is medium high carbonation with a fairly nice malt backbone. Finish is long and bitter with a resiny/sticky quality.

Overall this is a solid IPA but I prefer those that are more aromatic and don't tend to overpower you with a bitter taste and a pine resin taste. This one isn't like sucking on a pine cone but it is strong enough to hamper my enjoyment. Good one to pair with spicy foods.
