It has just occurred to me that I have never rated Summit Sága. This is notable because in the last two years, this is hands-down the one beer I have consumed the most of.

12 oz. can with an "EB" date of September 19, 2014, about two and a half months away. Poured into an old Summit shaker pint. Mostly clear dark gold body with a finger of bubbly barely off-white head. After about a minute, the head drops to a thin crown. Thick layers of bubbly lacing cling on to the glass as the head fades.

Most American IPAs have an emphasis on juicier, fruitier aromas or pinier, more resiny aromas. Sága's got both. Lemon rind, grapefruit, and apricot are backed up by a healthy dose of floral and piney aromas. Light caramel malts in the background give a little complexity, but overall this is a very hop-forward IPA.

Pine resin and fruit juice punch you in the mouth. Huge grapefruit aroma combined with fresh orchard flavors from the Rakau and a nice bitter resiny finish along with the dry toasted malts. The finish pushes on astringent, but doesn't quite get there.

Medium-bodied and moderately carbonated. Soft on the palate, balanced perfectly with a nice sharp, bitter finish.

At the beginning I already mentioned my bias towards this beer. However, that bias exists for a reason: this is a damned good IPA, and IMO one of the best bottled/canned IPAs in the Midwest. Drink this beer... drink lots of it. Just make sure it's fresh... I've had more than a handful of old and bad Ságas.
