Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Rusty orangish-brown with moderate white head and just a touch of lacing.

Smell: Spicy, bready rye and sweet biscuit.

Taste: Somewhat sweet core of biscuit, caramel and bread, offset by spicy rye. The malts also seem to have something else going on - not quite sour, not quite stale, just something. Maybe this is from the sour mash, or maybe I am just talking out of my ass since I know a sour mash was utilized. Slightly bitter finish with spicy, floral notes, and a ton of more rye.

Feel: Medium body, moderate carbonation, mostly dry finish.

Overall: A little better than the sum of its parts. And I really commend Summit and brewer Eric Harper for doing something unique. Too bad this can't have the free floating lacto that apparently infected the Kentucky Common style back in the early 20th century, but still a very nice beer.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep and fairly hazy copper amber orange with a lot of rising bubbles. Big five finger off white head with good retention. Leaves a lot of lacing sticking around the glass.

Smell: A pretty earthy and spicy aroma. Toasted malts with a big aroma of spicy rye bread. Hints of caramel, toffee, biscuit, crackers, and grains. Grassy, and earthy hops along with a light scent of citrus orange. Very bready and malt driven, but the rye and earthy hops make for a solid balanced mix. Pretty interesting and solid smell.

Taste: Like the smell indicates, a very spicy and earthy taste. A big taste of spicy rye bread upfront that lingers throughout. Toasted malts and wheat grains with notes of biscuit, caramel, toffee, and crackers. Musty and grassy earthy hops add some bitterness. Light taste of citrus orange along with a little pine. A very good balanced taste. Nice drying bready notes and spice.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy, spicy, and pretty smooth. Finishes dry.

Overall: A pretty solid and interesting take on a rye driven beer. Nicely balanced.

Picked up a single at Four Firkins. It's a more drinkable rye than most. The body's a step lighter than most rye ales, likely thanks to the corn and distiller's malt, but still provides a strong spicy citrus hops character to match the bready rye malts and the underlying barley. It's an unusual, but not foreign tasting beer. It just seems to the be a tasty combination of rye, barley, and hops that's never quite come together. Very cool beer, check it out.

Pours an effervescent amber with 2+ fingers of sand colored head. Nice head retention & lacing

S: Peppery & citrussy notes

T: Slight caramel flavor, peppery rye & slight orange peel up front. Slight doughy notes, caramel & grainy bitterness as this warms, Finishes with a slight nuttyness, bready sweetness & some astringency

MF: Light/medium body, lively carbonation, a touch of grittyness to this

Drinkable enough, but nothing I would want to buy again. Summit has really underwhelmed me since I first tried them years ago

Pours a clear copper color with an attractive two fingers of head that had excellant retention before settling to a thick think. Moderate amount of sticky lacing is left down the glass.

Plenty of rye that gives this beer a rustic aroma. Also floral and slightl citrus hop aromas that compliment the rye bread smell.

One of the more rye forward beers around today. There is also bready malt that has the tiniest bit of sweetness. Moderately bitter with floral and spicy notes. Finishes dry and slightly bitter.

I love the body and carbonation from this beer. Smooth and soft texture makes this beer a real joy to drink.

Another very good Unchained Series beer. Hope Summit keeps doing this beers for a long time to come.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a caramel color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is hoppy, some rye and grains. Taste is spicy, hops, rye, some bitterness,a bit of grains, good flavor. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall this is a solid beer.

Just saw this beer for the first time recently in a random beer store, looks like it's already been out for a couple months. After getting the chance to chat with Mark Stutrud from Summit earlier this year about the Unchained series when Saga was released, its something i'll never pass up. Much like Goose's Fulton & Wood series, each brewer gets creative freedom to brew their own unique recipe.

Deeply saturated hazed auburn, reddish russet in the light, with a billowing craggy head of eggshell foam that forms crazy peaks & valleys as it settles. Sticky concentric rings of lace in the glass. Ample head retention.

Sweet and spicy grainy rye aroma, specialty grains.

Lightly bitter with a spicy grainy breadiness, smooth and somewhat full bodied. Malt driven, some bittering hops but not much in the way of hop-derived flavors. Not bad though, and worth trying for Rye Beer fans.

12 oz bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada imperial pint
5.8% ABV, 55 IBUs, numbers on label.

A - Tiny particles do little to cloud the rusty amber beer which is teeming with carbonation. The tight-knit bubbles stream rapidly to a frothy ivory head that plateaus to a plump layer after clothing the pint in sheets of lace.

S - Sharp rye grinds against hoppy citrus lemon rind and notes of tropical fruit. Odd but welcome spice blends from the rye and what seems to faint ale yeast esters that also impart faint fruit notes. This creates a perfumy cloud over doughy malt sweetness and sticky caramelization that finishes out with nice balance.

T - Malty sweetness opens the gates to a much deeper, broad spectrum of flavor profiles going in Old 152. Rye remains heavily in play with spiciness and a dusting of orange-flavored cocoa but the hops really erupt, complimenting the earthy rye with an earthiness of their own and a twist of aggressive citrus rind.

M - Crisp carbonation and sharp rye make it rough around the edges but Old 152 has a medium body that supports it and a dry, bitter finish which puts a nice kabosh on this exploratory beer.

O - Old 152 is a rye beer that showcases the rye at the forefront instead of a minor ingredient. This does make the Old 152 a bit "harsh" in terms of providing an aggressive flavor profile and mouthfeel, but it's very well brewed and the hops compliment and round out the beer for a great drinking experience.

Pours a dark shade of amber with good clarity. Head is substantial and well-retained. Aroma is an odd combination of musty rye, corn, earthy hops and caramel malt. Sort of a rustic smelling beer.

Mild rye flavors show up first, followed by smooth caramel malt without much sweetness and mildly bitter, earthy hops that carry through a lengthy finish. There’s just a slight touch of sourness, although nowhere near tart. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth due to fullish body and low carbonation.

I really like it. In fact, my favorite Unchained since the pumpkin porter. Nice use of rye and a bit more sessionable and less biting than some of the recent RyePAs like Ruthless. Additional bonus points for digging up an obscure style!

T: Malty nutty, nicely balanced beer, not a hop bomb but overall a balanced beer.

Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. Another nice brew in the unchained line up

Produced a 1 finger beige head. Beer color is a translucent, cinnamon/gold.

Aroma is fairly strong. Biscuit, and a little hop, and funk scent.

The taste is of rye, biscuit, a slight sweetness. The hops produce a fair, but not overpowering bitterness. Medium carbonation, and mouth-feel.

Very nice beer, and easy drinking.

Poured into a flared pint glass. Lots and lots of foam, with the head overflowing the glass (although not the most careful of pours). Drank slightly warmer than expected, although it might help the flavors come out. Aromas aren't particularly strong, although the hops and rye stand out. Beer is forward on the tongue, with strong malt/rye at the beginning but a rather thin taste at the end. Light on the alcohol compared to some of the big rye beers I've had in the past. Kentucky Common is a beer style I've never had before - I think it'd be more enjoyable with a colder brew and in hotter weather.

Love the appearance. Slightly darker than a pale ale, and there's a nice (but not too much) white head on top. Not a ton of smell to the beer - not ultra hoppy - kind of sums up about how I'd expect a rye to smell, but nothing special. The taste is great. You can definitely taste the slightly more bitter in flavor grains of the rye in the beer. There's a slight bit more hoppiness to the beer than I've seen in other ryes, which I like. There's also a good maltiness to it, although not enough to make it too malty for the style. Overall, this may taste a little bitter to people who don't enjoy ipa's/pale ales/ the other hoppier styles, but part of that is due to the rye. I think that it's very nice rye ale - well balanced and great taste.

Listed by the brewer as a Kentucky Common style.

Appearance: Chestnut/amber color with a pillowy off-white head.

Aroma: Lots of malt presence and slightly sweet. Barley and rye malt.

Taste: Malty/nutty flavor with an overt peppery flavor from the rye. This creates a pretty nice balance between the sweet and spicy malt profiles. At 55 IBUs you can taste all of them but it is by no means overly bitter. The hops are earthy and work well with the rye. The rest of the malts create a very solid and robust flavor. Lingering hops and rye malt after the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied (surprisingly thick for the relatively low 5.8% ABV). Good amount of carbonation and a nice tingling sensation on the palate from the pepper/bitterness. Above average drinkability.

Final Thoughts: I wasn't sure what to expect but this is definitely a beer worth checking out. The rye malt really shines here. A decently balanced brew that delivers on flavor. Would I drink it again? Yes, and soon since it's a one time release!

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

Does this series imply that the brewers are normally chained up? Anyway, this stuff pours a clear sunset amber topped by a finger of off-cream foam. The nose comprises mild strawberry, dirt, light leek, perfume-y flowers, light grass, and a smattering of dried-up biscuit. The taste holds notes of mild caramel, earthy greens, light grass, and a splash of grapefruit zest near the back end. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a pretty dry finish. Overall, a generally nice hoppy rye, nothing remotely close to special, and, frankly, not up to the usual Unchained standards, but it's a decent enough brew.

On tap at Blind Pig in Champaign, IL. I am looking forward to this. A pre-Prohibition "Kentucky Common" style that uses a sour mash, rye, and corn. Talk about adjuncts.

A: Pours a dark reddish/orange color with an amber hue. A two finger white head forms with excellent retention. Spiderweb lace all the way down the glass.
S: The first thing I get is the fruity, spicy, peppery rye. Perfectly balanced with bread and biscuit aromas. Juicy hops in the finish with a lingering grapefruit bitterness.
T: Excellent. I love rye, and this has it in spades. Fruity flavors like pears and bananas. Spicy, peppery, and bready rye. Plenty of hops. Juicy, slightly bitter. Grapefruit. Everything is so well balanced.
M/D: A medium body. Crisp and clean carbonation, that is smooth at the same time. Finishes on the dry side. So enjoyable. Gone in no time, and very moreish. I can quaff several without a thought.

An excellent beer that is so enjoyable and easy to drink. Lots of subtle nuance, and complex at the same time. Anybody that thinks adjuncts don't belong in beer need to try this. Excellent, and highly recommended.

Reddish amber liquid with a haze of suspended particulates. Khaki head slight lace. Smells of earth, sod, and citrus. Taste is quite sour with a strong floral, spicy character, earthiness and citrus as well. Moderate bitterness. Medium body slightly watery mouthfeel. Dry, mildly bitter lingering finish. Interesting creation.

This beer pours a semi-clear amber color. The head is on inch in height, and recedes rather quickly into a think layer of sparse foam. The aroma is amazingly vibrant. Flower bed, caraway, rye dough, caramel, and toffee, and nougat. I could smell this beer all day long. Up front the taste has all the vibrant complexities of the aroma with the addition of a firm bitterness. It does, however, vanish from the palate within seconds leaving virtually no aftertaste. That really takes away from the beer for me. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with aggressive carbonation, and a smooth texture. Overall, I'm glad I got the opportunity to try my first Kentucky Common, but I can't see myself buying this again. Beers in this oddball vein usually get me really excited, but one just doesn't do it for me.

A: Dark amber/copper with a nice light khaki head. Awesome sticky, whispy lacing.

S: Some rye along with toasty malts, apples, pears, and just a very small hint of sour. Some earthy and slightly citrus hops lurking somewhere in there too. Very interesting, but very good.

T: Ever so slightly sweet at first with lots of toasted malt, biscuit and some rye. There is almost a very, very slight sourness or something going on with the malts. Probably from the sour mash. More spicy rye and bitter hops near the finish. Finish is a bit dry.

M: Medium to lighter body. Carbonation is a bit on the higher side.

O: Okay drinkability. A very interesting beer. A different style for sure (don't think it's technically a rye beer). It's well made and definitely worth seeking out to try.

A - Somewhat cloudy copper color with a one-finger, khaki colored head of foam. It left sudsy trails of lace.

S - Some sourness and rye. A touch of sweet bread aroma.

T - It tasted fairly peppery and sourish. Good rye bread flavor with some caramel.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - This is a nice rye beer. Another good Unchained beer.

Surprisingly hoppy aroma with the barley and malt certainly background. Grassy, fruit, citrus with a little spice. With warming the malt comes through in a good way. Enjoyable.
Darker amber with tints of red. Very clear Big full tan head.
Flavor is even more complex with a tart and bitter finish that lies on the tongue with a long sourness that resembles grapefruit, but not quite. Nice fresh malt character up front with a crackling bite and hints of rye. The hops, rye and sourness all intermingle in a really enjoyable way. In time some shots of smokiness.
Littler body, but still in the moderate area. Soft carbonation and certainly an ample amount.
Drinks very easily. A nice beer with good qualities and I'd suspect would go well with a lot food.
Nicely done.

Pours an almost-clear dark orangey amber. One finger of cream-yellow head, good retention, stellar lacing that looks like wave-washed foam.

Smell is soft and smooth, with a gentle rye spice. I wish there were more of it, because what I find is really nice. Lightly crisp, robust and refreshing all at the same time. That touch of spice adds a lot.

Taste is muddled, with a bit of bitter, a bit of spice, and wallop of odd oily, almost chalky, flavors. It's like a rye-d up IPA gone wrong. Weird.

The mouthfeel blends in with the taste, but neither one impresses me. It has this chalky astringency, especially late, that I don't really like. The rest of it is fine, medium-light body with plenty of carbonation. But that finish, like some bitter water-absorbing powder, really doesn't work for me with this beer.

I had high hopes, but I feel like it fell apart in the taste and mouthfeel. It's like a sphere that shattered, sending sharp broken bits off in different directions. They could have worked if they'd held together, but instead each one has a cutting effect.

A- Red-copper. Head is three fingers, very thick, lasts well and leave a ton of lacing. Quite nice looking.
S- Earthy, big rye scents, a bit of pepper, a bit musty, a touch of sweetness.
T- Up front it's a big rye kick. Spicy, earthy, a little bit sweet, nice flavors all around. My only real critique is I'm not sure what the hop profile accomplishes. It's just a flash in the finish, but it's kind of in this middle ground where it is big enough that you notice it, but not big enough to really embrace or to balance the beer. Either make it bigger and make it a balanced beer or let me have a rye bomb.
M- A touch chewy at first, and a bit sticky/slick. A little surprising in this regard. A bit drier would be appreciated for me.
O- A good rye beer that is a couple tweaks away from being very strong.

pours deep amber with a fluffy head and good stickage

Aroma of mashed malt, salt water, herbal hops, earth

Rich malty graininess with the bite of peppery rye. Nice nutty bitterness, with a touch of brown sugar to balance, but this is malty without being sweet. Herbal hops.

Body is medium to full, with a moderate carbonation. Drying finish.

Excellent brown rye. Not as sweet as a typical red ale. Malt and rye dominate, giving a bourbon like sourness. Great beer.

12oz bottle with no date, enjoyed out of the bottle

smell is an earthy must, notes of hazelnut, wood, pine. taste is bready and sour at first, giving way to bitter pine, dried dark fruit, peppery rye, and sweet roasted nut. feel is a well carbonated full medium.

taste is decently complex, but marred by dominating sour bitterness. it doesnt hurt the flavor for me, but I wouldn't mind it being more balanced. another great unchained beer, maybe my favorite since the black ale.
