$2.45 @ Charles Street Liquors, Boston, MA:

Presentation: .5 liter brown bottle with no freshness date, just a lot # which means nothing to the consumer. Blurb about the beer on the back label.

Appearance: Foamy head at the start, thin wispy lace afterwards on top of a sunset red color brew.

Smell: Honey and grassy of malt and hops, sweet bread comes to mind, thick aroma with some hints of alcohol also.

Taste: Medium bodied with a light carbonation. Grassy at first with a wild hop and malt mix, hints of very mild fruit and honey come next. Maltiness goes a touch nutty with a slight dextrin character. Malt sweetness is bigger than it actually looks but is modest in character as the hops and alcohol set down on the taste buds. Finishes sweet but still draws on the hops and some toasted grain flavor in the finish.

Notes: This is one yummy Maibock, a ton of flavor packed into each sip.

A pretty, very beery beer...lacy head goes down quickly. I pulled the 6 pack fresh from the case---as the green glass sitting in a well-lit store will skunk it up quick--no skunk aroma at all this way---BUT the Germans would not call it fresh either. All malt, no hops in the aroma--which is correct for the style.

The hops give it a clean, fresh aftertaste, cutting through the heavy caramel malts. Extremely well balanced--to be expected of German beers, something American brewers should learn--if their taste buds are not hop-burned-out already. This is NOT an IPA drinkers beer--as the flavor is all about the quality malt--with hops only as an accent. A great Spring beer--after a long hot day, looking forward to summer, this beer goes down very well-- with a mouth-feel almost like a meal, but not as meat-and-potatos as say double bock or dark ales.

Maibock is one of my favorite styles, with Einbecker Mai-Urbock my first and favorite of the genre. This one is close, but not quite as light....still a super high-quality beer, for those who know quality beer is more about malt, than hops.

Poured on-tap into a mug. Pours red orange with a small white head. Smells of roasted malt with slight berries. Tastes of slight fruit nice malt, sweet but not too sweet. Beer is lightly carbonated, light bodied, crisp finish. Overall a pretty good beer.

A self-acclaimed springtime beer.

Appearance - Beautiful amber blonde. Little head. Very nice to pour.

Smell - Smells exactly like Sugar in the Raw... took me forever to figure out that one.

Taste - Sweet, definitely similar to the smell, but not as overpowering. Slight banana that many German beers have, but it's well balanced with a little hops and some grainy malt.

Mouthfeel - Slight carb. would have liked a little more. Almost too sweet on the tongue.

Overall, very nice Hofbrau. Well balanced with no one flavor overpowering any other. Light, crisp, sweet, and full all at the same time.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a clear pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear deep amber color with a nice small foamy white head. Foam fades fast and leaves nice sticky lacing.

Smell: Floral hops and sweet malts combine to make this an inviting nose.

Taste: A little bitter hops up front with a fruity and pine-like quality, but it's quickly mellowed by a sweet and caramel maltiness. A really satisfying and well-balanced beer.

Mouth Feel: Medium bodied with good carbonation. Finishes clean and semi-sweet on the tongue.

Overall: One of the best Maibock's I've tried (and I've tried many). I love this style, and this one is a perfect example of it. Well balanced with big flavors and a good ABV to match.
