The origin of Hofbrau Hefe Weizen dates back to 1589 and since then the "Weisse" has a distinctive place in the history of Hofbrau Munchen. The beer is characterized by its sparkling, by its rich foam and naturally by its unforgettable refreshing taste.

Poured from an 11.2 ounce green bottle into a weizen glass.

Appearance: Cloudy yellow with big white head. Only spots of lacing.

Smell: My first ever skunked hefe. Why oh why do people insist on using green bottles? I can still tell it's a wheat beer past the skunk.

Taste: Very light compared to other German hefes. Skunkiness is still present in the taste but not as bad as it is in the smell.

Smooth, quite a bit of fruit, perhaps not as “clean” pr complex as Weihenstephaner or Franziskaner

330ml bottle into a pint glass. Coding beyond my comprehension.

Looks very nice in the glass. Glassy golden yellow body with a small white head, no lacing though.

Good honest aromas of banana, wheat and yeast.

Tastes follows the nose, clean, faintly sweet.

Finish follows the nose and the taste.

Overall, very reminiscent of the hoeggarden I had last night, though not as strong tasting. Nice beer.

2022 Aug 27: Review moved to here from "Hofbräu Hefe Weizen" under the brewery Hofbräu Pittsburgh

Latest/Current Review: 09 July, 2022

0.33 L bottle
Bottle Date: L242U => 30-Aug-2021
Consumed on: 09-july-2022
Glass: 0.5 L Weizen Vase
Pouring Temp: 51.8

Look:
Cloudy and murky golden yellow. I can see shadows of my fingers through any part of the glass though they are very vague and indistinct at the bell (ie, the top). 3-finger creamy white head slowly dissipates very slowly to about 2 fingers with excellent lacing

Smell:
Spicy cloves and citrus dominate the nose with underlying notes of banana and some bubblegum. Some white bread here and there. A light citrus tartness comes through at the end.

Taste:
Cloves and citrus start things off and stay front and center throughout the sip. Subtle banana and some bubblegum come through in the middle. The sip finishes with spicy cloves and tart citrus, which is refreshing and makes one want another sip.

Feel:
Smooth, creamy, and well carbonated. The carbonation and the cloves provide a nice crisp and even somewhat sharp feel. The body is medium with a lean to the lighter side.

Overall:
A solid and refreshing Hefeweizen that is great for the summertime (at least the sub-90 days) and with German food.

0.33 L bottle
Bottle Date: L 300T => 26 Oct, 2020
Consumed on: 17-june-2022
Glass: 12 oz Weizen Vase
Pouring Temp: 51.1

Look:
Cloudy and murky golden yellow. I can see shadows of my fingers through any part of the glass though they are very vague and indistinct at the bell (ie, the top). 2-finger creamy white head slowly dissipates to about 0.25" of a consistent creamy color. Fine lacing.

Smell:
Spicy cloves and citrus dominate the nose with underlying notes of banana and some bubblegum. Some white bread here and there. A light citrus tartness comes through at the end.

Taste:
Cloves and citrus start things off and stay throughout the sip. Banana and sweet fruit notes and some bubblegum come through in the middle. There is some cardboard, which tells me that this bottle has past its prime (Hefeweizens don't age very well). The sip finishes with spicy cloves and tart citrus, which is actually refreshing and makes one want another sip.

Feel:
Smooth, and creamy. The body is medium with a lean to the lighter side.

Overall:
Not bad. Not bad at all. A solid if unspectacular Hefeweizen that drinks easily and goes well with food (I had it with some Weisswurst/Bockwurst). Age has caught up with this bottle, unfortunately. It is still tasty and good, mind you, but does have that cardboard note that old(er) Hefeweizens tend to get. I have had this beer fresh (including vom Fass) and know that it is better than my review here suggests. I will get a fresher bottle and re-review.

A nice Hefeweizen from this classic German brewery. Pours a pretty gold-to-amber in a Pils glass; somewhat hazy; large but airy head, quickly dissipating; tiny Champagne bubbles. Head is wheaty and rich, with some bright/sweet notes and a hint of a lager base. Very pleasant to drink, moderate mouthfeel, medium to light carbonation, a pleasant blend of flavors tending toward wheaty notes, without much hop bite. I'd especially enjoy it with Asian or Mexican food. Won't knock your socks off, but very dependable and drinkable.

From a bottle. Cloudy orange color with a thin layer of bubbles. Banana and clove smell. Medium body. Wheat flavors up front with banana and clove notes and moderate sweetness. Classic

12oz. bottle.
Golden, clear and opaque with a tall, bright white head that had legs and left lace.
The aroma is hefe all the way - banana esters and herbal hops.
Great wheat character and solid malt sweetness in compliment.
Light bodied and refreshing but full of flavor despite the light mouth feel.
A solid example of the style.
