After shopping for beer so long, it actually came as a surprise to me that Hofbrau was available in the US. Should have been obvious, I guess, but after being so close to the brewery a few years ago, I should have been looking for it here.

Right off the bat, looking at the bottle, this baby was obviously a little on the cloudy side. Freshly opened, it smelled of a wheaty, yeasty bread, with a nice malty aftersmell. Smelled delightful... I was worried it wasn't going to be very fresh-tasting.

After drinking so many different Hefe's this summer, it was a big surprise to hop right into this one. Just an awesome brew...very crisp and tasty. Lots of wheat present, with a sweetish malt backbone, and a little bit of what I would guess is the yeast. Didn't get much on the fruits side, except the vague banana presence usually in a good hefe.

Really enjoyed this. A highly drinkable, very well-made brew. There are hofbrau beer gardens in the US now, at least one in Panama City Beach. Hopefully will be able to stop by and try there entire selection on tap! (1,064 characters)

This is my first review ever, so bear with me.

This is is a summery beer (if you will) in that it is refreshing, tasty, and actually a decent thirst quencher. It is a bit sweet and thus differentiates itself from many of Hofbrau's other offerings.

Hefe Weizen is not for the dunkel crowd or the stout crowd unless members of those crowds simply love all types of excellent beer. You may convert your friend who today drinks Bud Light Lime but only if he doesn't have a vagina.

This is a white beer and thus requires a glass or some clever bottle-rolling or both. Drinking it with neither will result in some nasty dregs in the bottom of the bottle and, thus, in your stomach. Do not do this.

I enjoyed this beverage immensely. I'm enjoying another one right now. (766 characters)

I had this at the Hofbrauhous in Munich Germany, it was delicious. My buddy, and I ate lunch and put down a couple steins, during Oktoberfest 2009.

I am a Wheat beer fan, so I loved the taste. It was quite strong, but incredibly smooth and easy to drink. It was probably served a bit below room temperature, but warmed before I could finish and still had a great taste to it. Felt like it had a hint of banana, orange, and some other fruits, but all around spectacular. (470 characters)

looks real nice in the glass with a two finger head cloudy pale golden color and a light sticky lace as you drink.

smells of fresh wheat malt, hint of lemon and yeast just waiting to be tasted.

and what a great taste, wheat malt, yeast, banana, with hints of spice and clove and big tangy finish and a tight crisp carbonation and medium body.

love hefe weizen beer and this one is right at the top. (401 characters)

Presentation: It was poured from a green 11.2oz bottle into a Weizen glass. The bottle has no freshness date or any info other than the style.

Appearance: There is a thick hazy yeast cloud inside of a yellow orange body with light yellow highlights at the edges. Some yeast sediment settles to the bottom of the glass as well. The head on top builds up tall and full on the pour before quickly settling down to a thin cap of foam. It is a soft plain white in color and it hangs on well making lots of spotty slick lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell: The aroma has a light fruity yeast character with a light touch of spice and hops.

Taste/Palate: The flavor has a solid wheaty and yeasty, medium to full bodied taste with delicate fruit and bubble gum notes. It finishes with dry dusty yeast and spicy mellow hops. The texture is smooth and almost creamy, but not slick with lots of soft carbonation.

Notes: I was very impressed with the outstanding balance, mouth feel and dryer less fruity (sweet/slick) yeast flavor on this Hefeweizen. (1,051 characters)

This beer pours a cloudy pale orange color. The head is a massive three inches in height, and recedes slowly into a large cap of lacing that sticks around leaving chunky lacing on the sides of the glass. The aroma is of clove, banana, lemon, and a hint of bubblegum. The taste is similar to the aroma, but with slightly less banana. The mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with a chewy texture, and lively carbonation. Overall, this is a great hefe that I can see as a regular in my refrigerator. (492 characters)

Appearance: A pale golden color with an orange hue, slightly hazy, thick off white creamy head with slightly yellow tint that persist for about 1 or more minutes and perfectly bubling arise to the surface
Aroma: Wheat malt are a main character with subtle Hop aroma, Banana and clove are also noted and you can feel a yeasty odor at the palate
Taste: Medium body, rounded and Slightly bitter, smooth and well balance with a tiny hint of fruity sweetness
Conclusion: Exeptional drinkability score, smooth and complex. I enjoy this beer very much compare to those other German weisse beer include Weihenstephaner and Schneider (624 characters)

Pilsner Glass

A - One inch head, something smoky drifting about through the copperish body of the beer immediately after the pour then dissipating to a consistent, cloudy gold.
S - Wheat, yeasty, bready.
T - Sweetish wheat then followed by fruity.
M - Slight carbonation up front, fades quickly. Pleasant feel. Light.
D - High. Enjoying on a warm July night. (363 characters)

This is a wonderful, traditional German hefe weizen- one that doesn't get a ton of exposure but deserves it. Ranks right up there with the others. Apparently, this was the only hefe weizen brewed in Munich for over 200 years. Talk about a captured audience!

Great banana nose, great mouthfeel, perfectly balanced sweetness. Great for a hot summer day. Can't wait to have it on tap. (382 characters)

I drink this now and again because I like a good Bavarian Weizen -- time to add it to the reviews.

A -- Hazy golden with a very dense white head.

S -- Clove, citrus, fresh yeast and malted wheat. What more can you ask for?

T -- Clove spicy up front with wheat, barley and yeasty breadiness in the middle, finishing slightly tart and citric. Some vague vanilla character back. Very well balanced in all characteristics.

M -- Smooth to crisp mouthfeel with a light to medium light body.

D -- Tops. If anyone ever asks for a good Weizen that defines the style, grab them a fresh HB. All of the Munich breweries make a Weizen, and they're all great in their own way. Prosit to this example. (691 characters)

Sublime. This is the sublime smell of beer as it can be. You smell this and you have died and gone to heaven.

Hopefully that will convince you to drink this beer. My current tasting is certainly not my first (which could have been when I was 12 or 13, 40 years ago). But in my years of wisdom, I think that one could live off nothing but this beer, and a few other nutrients now and again.

Great stuff. (405 characters)

This beer pours a cloudy yellow color with an enormous head. Good aroma. Light and sweet fruitiness. Spicy and lemony. The flavor is slightly spicy, lemony, some banana. The aftertaste is superb - clove, banana. Wow. I really enjoyed this beer. I have a new favorite hefe. Has a great, fully body with a great mouthfeel. Great carbonation. Very interesting beer. I'll be going out today to pick some up. (403 characters)

This beer is so cloudy it looks like lemonade. They only serve this one in half-liter glasses for some reason. No head on the beer the frauline served me. It is extremely wild and yeasty smelling, very snappy on the nose.

First taste has such an over the top wheat and yeast presence, very strong lemon, orange, wheat tones. In fact it tastes so strong of the wheat and yeast it almost comes across cinnamon-like if that makes sense. Man, does this even contain hops at all???

Throughout this beer, all I can think about are the tasty wheat and yeast levels, the hops are nearly forgotten. They are there at the end if you exercise a little patience, but they are definitely *not* the point of this beer. Simply outstanding, I was expecting a wheaty, very yeasty beer, in fact I took an allergy pill before I went to the place. I'll tell you this, it's a good thing I did. If you have seasonal allergies, this beer is going to trigger them big time. Do the Zyrtec, Allegra, whatever the heck you gotta take, 'cause this is an awesome Weizen. (1,047 characters)

I have only really had 2 kinds of Hefe Weizen's before. One was on tap in Leavenworth, WA and I just cant seem to get the brewers name. However, this beer has came very close to the smooth and heaven like Hefe Weizen I tasted before. The beer has great color and head. The smell is full. The taste is very well rounded and anytime in the mood to really just sit down with a beer and appreciate its existence, this is my go too. (427 characters)

Once again I am still new to the rating process.

Great German beer with a nice easy flavor. If you are looking for a easy going good summer beer, this is for you. It has a great taste, but not packed with tons of different flavors. Just a good old fashioned beer. (265 characters)

A great German wheat beer in a bottle that made the voyage to Pennsylvania. Citrusy and clove with low carbonation for a wheat beer. Cloudy beautiful Belgian lace as the beer is drank form a Wheat glass. One of the better one's that I've had in a while. Good body and head character. Very thirst quenching and refreshing. (321 characters)

On tap at Primebar Chicago.

I was with a German (Austrian to be exact) colleague and he recommended this beer. What a great choice! If you are looking for a perfect beer that really exemplifies the hefeweizen style, this is it! I'll need to find this at places closer to me for the future. He suggested even mixed this with banana juice or some other fruit juice for added flavor. I may have to try this as well.

Overall, don't miss this if you love this style. (463 characters)

Had this on tap at Kaizerhof in Yurakucho, Tokyo. Poured into a weisse glass. Say whatever you can about a good hefe and this fits. Beautiful elegant appearance, wonderful smells of wheat and grapefruit, taste matches its looks, it goes down smooth, and has no negative aftertaste or gas. Overall, this is a solid hefe that leans toward a grapefruit side. Grapefruit isn't my favorite, but if you're into that, you'd love it. (425 characters)

Pours out to a lightly hazy pale copper, forming a modest bone-white head with average retention and lacing. Adding the yeast makes it look like raw apple cider. Carbonation is moderately strong. The aroma is of cloves, distant banana, pale malt, vanilla, and fruity apple esters. Quite nice. Mouthfeel is brisk and pleasantly stinging with firm carbonation like a good hefe-weizen should be, with a medium-light body. Tastes pretty damn good with a predominance of bananas that wasn't quite as evident in the aroma, balanced by spicy cloves. The apples esters are quite strong and add a nice balance, creating a false impression of apple-juice sweetness. Bitterness is mild and it finishes with a crisp zest and some mild green cereal notes. The yeast is not obtrusive on first pour, but adding the swirls adds a bready astringency to the finish. I prefer this one without the dregs.

This is a pleasantly surprising and wonderfully delightful hefe-weizen. Well-balanced and full of nuance, but also quite rich and rewarding. Highly recommended! (1,048 characters)

Pours a hazy orange out of the bottle, with a small white head. Smell is very strong, of bread, bananas and malt. Slight raison scent as well. Taste is of sweet malt and wheat, with a smooth finish that leaves your tongue slightly tingling. High effervescence and a very "crisp" mouthfeel. Very drinkable, watch yourself... (323 characters)

A - Pours a clear golden color. Huge airy & fluffy 2 finger pillowy head.

S - Freshly cut wheat, honey grain, slightly phenolic, sharp yeast, white bread malt overtones, a hint of sweet skunk musk, clove spice.

T/M - Faint banana yeast, sweet brisk grain, honey malt, elegant vanilla clove, blended spices, touch of floral. The subtle citrus plays on the back of the tongue. Mouthfeel is smooth and slightly creamy. Above average carbonation that tantalizes the taste buds.

This is what a Hefeweizen is suppose to taste like, in my opinion. The palate is literally bursting with fresh flavors. The clove and banana yeast plays a huge role along with the perfect malt. The sweet grain paired with the honey malt and glorious yeast sets this beer apart from the pack. This is a beer to be treasured. This is simply a masterpeice. Bravo! (839 characters)

Poured a gorgeous cloudy yellow with a thin ring of white head. It looked quite nice, but it was lacking a lot of the normal hefeweizen head, the body however looked excellent. Scents of clove, orange blossoms, yeasty wheat bread and sweet floral aromas. It was a delicate aroma profile, but very nice, quite appetizing and very appealing. Taste began with yeasty wheat bread and wheat cracker, but quickly the wheat was joined by notes of pear, apricot, mild floral hops, sweet spices, particularly clove, and a bit of honey, which became more prominent on the finish and aftertaste. This beer surprises you with it's delicate, yet complex flavor profile. It's excellent. Mouthfeel is light bodied with high carbonation and a drying finish. True to style for a hefeweizen. Overall this is an excellent hefeweizen. It's got the bones of the style, as well as a complexity to it's flavor that puts it easily on par with Weihenstephaner. Well worth drinking. (956 characters)

Having this beer on tap was incredible. Nice formed white head in a tradtional Hefe glass as Zum Schneider in NYC on a summer night, sitting outside was wonderful. Tasty and smooth, this beer had the perfect balance of tangy flavors combined with other fruity yeast textures. This beer was easy to drink, I could have stayed all night. A fine example, and so fresh, which makes a huge difference. (396 characters)

A: Did the ol' inverted pour, which worked just perfectly with this beer, just perfect. Ended up with a nice 4 finger, super white head with the top nice and creamy and tips with yeasty trub. Unfortunately it's fading fast. The beer is dark golden with lots of unfiltery goodness and active carbonation. If the head were a little bitter still it'd get more credit, but good none the less.

S: More wheaty and less yeasty than a more Bavarian variety, but still great, and in fact I prefer it more. Cleaner. Though still plenty of bananas, they're just fresher bananas. Not really getting too much clove on this, but I prefer the banana bombs.

T: Yep, still very bananay, but maybe a touch, just a touch, of clove. A little bitter too, perhaps from some nobel hops for flavor? It's not overwhelming, it's very drinkable and aimable. I wouldn't say perfect, but damn close.

M: Creamy, with a little crisp bite at the end. Very nice.

D: No wonder German's drink on a sunday afternoon. This just screams biergarten all day long. Perfect drinkability. (1,049 characters)
