DATE TASTED: November 27, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: Weihenstephaner pilsner... OCCASION: Black Friday visit to Hazleton went well--time to celebrate... APPEARANCE: light, almost sallow golden straw body; extremely clear for a hefe--must be filtered...thick, frothy two-finger snow-white head that retains stubbornly; AROMA: wonderful bubblegum pops with vibrant floral impressions; lesser scents of lemongrass, hay, and .... PALATE: light, smooth, swift to the throat; pleasant aftertaste that lingers but does not harsh the mellow... TASTE: the bubblegum is appreciable, with a fair amount of breadiness, but no bitterness... soft banana late, with some pear, perhaps...OVERALL: this my not be a classic, mostly because it is not a truly distinguishable beer, but rather a fresh, pleasantly cleansing hefe, with minimal flavor profiling... as drinkable as they come, with enough character to be remembered--ultra-clean and refreshing...

THis is a pretty ince example of a good hefeweizen. This is not my favorite style, but I tried to not hold that against the beer in my review. It's very malty as ecpected, but nothing to write home about.

A solid hefe in every way. Hofbrau has yet to dissipoint me. Pours a cloudy straw color . . . Pretty typical for the style. Aromas are the usual bananas and cloves. Some spice and a slight skunkyness as well. Same goes for the taste. Feel isn't quite world class due to it not being as creamy and crisp as I had hoped for. Overall a terrific hefe from Germany !

I think I confused this with Hofbräu Münchner Weisse because after revisiting this via a 6-pack, it's a weaksauce version of a full-bodied Hefe-helles.

Not worth another buy in the German beer genre.

Clear pale gold with one finger of white head. Some splotches of lace.
Smell is skunky with a bit of clove.
Taste is banana wheat clove.
Mouthfeel is light with alright carbonation. Finish is lightly tart and refreshing.
Overall an average Hefe and with the green bottle skunk not so pleasing.

This beer pours a hazy yellow. The aroma is classic hefe, which makes sense as that is what this is. Maybe a little heavier on the spice than fruit components on the nose. The flavor was light, fizzy, fruity, and spicy. Well balanced, but not a stand out in any way. I am loving my new exploration of well done German styles.

From the 330 ml. green bottle. Sampled on August 22, 2015.

Cloudy straw yellow pour under a huge white, foamy head that fades back.

Aroma of toasted wheat, sweetness, grass, and even a hint of lemon.

Smooth, light to medium body,

Delicious sweet toastiness that I expect from a German Hefe that ends clean and slightly dry.

Serving: Bottle, from the bottle (eek!)
Served: 8 August 2015

Appearance: Had this one from the bottle, since I was at a party, so I can't comment on how the beer looks, but seriously, a green bottle? I'm normally not one to criticize bottle colors, but of all the beers, a hefeweizen seems the least likely to end up in a green bottle. Minus major points here.

Smell: Soft, sweat underlying maltiness with the standard banana/clove weizen flavors on top. More banana than clove.

Taste: Much better than I had anticipated, with a nice, full banana assertion on top of a sweet, bready malt base. Really not a bad weizen, and definitely better than some of the best American examples, though not as good as Weihenstephaner or Schneider Weisse.

Mouthfeel: A bit thinner than the exemplars of the style, and with a bit higher carbonation.

Overall: A pretty decent German weißbier, along the same lines as Erdinger- good, but nothing special from the German side, but still better than 90% of American-made examples.

Smell-I am not even sure what to say here, its not good.
Taste- A pleasant spicy , banana undertone, does not taste as strong as the smell.
Mouth Feel- well carbonated, smooth, almost an oily feel.
Overall-A great beer even with the smell.

Hofbräu Hefeweizen.

Didn't even notice this one came in a green bottle until I got it home and looked at it...plus it comes from the skunk belt in Europe. Well, Expect the worst and hope for the best I guess.

Look - Pours hazy orange with a half finger of off white head that doesn't stick around quickly turning into cloud formations on the top of the body. Too murky to get a read on the carbonation. Sediment ia floating around freely. 4.

Smell - Yep, my worst fears have come true. It's a skunked bottle. I don't pick up much else. Some slight clove and banana. But skunk wins this one. 2.5.

Taste - The skunk is there but it is overpowered by ripe, creamy banana. I really cannot grasp much more aside from some lemon zest. This beer straight the fuck up tastes like eating a banana. Unfortunately the skunk lingers around in the background just enough to annoy you and throw the flavor off. 3.5.

Feel - Medium bodied with heavy carbonation. I mean this fuckin' stuff is stinginly heavy. Feel is slightly creamy due to the lingering flavor. 3.25.

Feel - Pretty one dimensional and obviously not fresh due to the presence of the skunk. This is the only green bottled beer I've ever had that broke a solid three. I will admit that if the skunk weren't there in the background being a complete cock block this beer would have gotten a higher score in the taste category. Tastes good, but it could have been killer. And with that, I'm done with green bottled beer forever. 3.5.

Poured from a bottle into a Pilsner glass. Thin head that dissipated slowly over a few minutes, without much lacing. Color was a nice cloudy gold. Smell was a bit skunky, definitely not my cuppa tea. Mouthfeel was pleasant, fairly apparent carbonation. Taste had a nice balance of hops, not too much, but juuuuust enough for me to say, "yup, that's a Hefeweizen alright."

Finish was a bit flat, but wetted the throat nicely. Definitely a thirst-quencher.

Glad I got the 6-pack, but might not get it again.

Bright yellow with a snow white head. Smells of wheat and bread, with a touch of fruit. Taste is sweet but not overbearing. Feels nice and drinks smooth. I'm not a big Hefenweizen fan, but this wasn't too bad.

It's not quite the Hefeweizen I was expecting as it is definitely much clearer than your average Hefeweizen, but it is good nonetheless. It does have that classic Hefeweizen flavor profile, but it's not nearly as in your face as some which is probably why I like it so much. I would consider this a very good starter for anyone looking to try the Hefeweizen category for the first time. So far I've had 4 styles from this brewer and all of them have been very smooth and easy to drink.

Got this as part of a build-your-own-sixer at my Trig's grocer. If I could have read the bottling code earlier, I probably wouldn't have picked this one up, as it says it was bottled on the 118th day of 2014, and this is now the 150th day of 2015. Poured right from the fridge into a weizen glass.

L: Pours a very cloudy dark straw color with about an inch-and-a-half of white frothy head that dissipates fairly quicky and leaves a bit of cling. I'm a little concerned about the amount of sediment that was hanging out in the bottom of this bottle.

S: I could immediately get some skunk aroma when I opened the bottle. As it settles, the skunk isn't nearly as pronounced. There's bright wheat, banana, and a bit of clove in the bouquet. Quite bright and assertive.

T: Here goes nothing... Bright wheat notes at the front--a bit tart on the palate--along with the expected banana bread and clove indicative of the style. The skunkiness from the nose doesn't really carry over into the taste that much, but there is a subtle presence. The middle and back end of the taste carry over most of what was in the front, with just a touch lemongrass at the close. Not too bad for a very old green bottle.

F: Bright, crisp, and at times smooth lighter-bodied brew. There's a good level of carbonation on this one.

O: Well, I haven't keeled over and died from this one yet. I really wish that I had a fresher beer to review, but this really was pretty tasty as is. It's far from the best hefeweizen I've ever had, but I'd have no problems returning to this one again.

Let's face it, our friends in Deutchland know how to make beer. This is especially true when talking about this style. Although I've been to Hofbräuhaus House in Munich, I enjoyed this selection from a bottle at home in the USA. This is the standard...Hefeweizen is either better or worse than this. Good beer.

Very banana oriented. Quite smooth and light to the palate. Had this on tap at the Hofbräuhaus and it did not disappoint. Not a whole lot of wheat came through though which was surprising because it is a Hefe Weizen... But overall this is quality beer and does not disappoint!

Very creamy, very banana white bread to white bread crust background. Not a lot of hop presence, drinkable, excellent and persisten lace. Decent beer for a late summer evening.

Appearance - Cloudy yellow liquid with white head

Smell - this came off as unpleasant, which I will chalk up to the green bottling. Skunk aroma associated with Euro imports, slight clove/banana aroma

Taste - much better than the smell, I'm getting banana, clove, lemon and orange

Mouthfeel - light bodied, medium carbonation, refreshing and easy to drink

Overall - this is a decent representation of the style, although it doesn't quite hold up against the leaders of the pack in this category. Would like to try this on draft.

Price Point - $9.59/6 pack 11.2 oz bottles

Pours a semi-clear yellow-gold color with smooth white head and spotty lacing. Lots of carbonation striving for the top of the glass. Aroma, well, is like smelling the tail end of an agitated skunk that sat in a bowl of rotten lemons. Let's hope the taste is better. Taste is much much better than the smell, with flavors of tart lemon and other assorted citrus coming forth and a tartness that is very nice. Malt takes a backseat to the refreshing lemony taste. Mouthfeel is very nice with lots of carbonation and this is one smooth beer !!

Looking : pillowy, creamy head with lots of lace and stark white standing at 2 fingers tall. Body is more transparent than most Hefeweizens and has almost no opacity. Golden color. Docking points for low opacity.

Smelling : full of fruity esters - cling peaches, fruit cocktail, dirty wheat, faint alcohol. "Cloudy"/"floaty" smelling like most genuine hefeweizen beers.

Tasting : the frontside is watery and lacking in flavor, like a watered down ligh beer. When the beer hits the back of the throat the flavors start to come through, and though underwhelming they are appropriate. Fruity, with orange and peach, some light cinnamon, and wheat. By and large however, the beer is greatly lacking in flavor and is more washed out than most.

Feelings : typical light bodied creaminess that pushes medium body territory, a carbonated zing zaps it to life, and it ends clean.

Overall impressions : ...not too. It's a bit watery for a Hefeweizen and would have preferred more flavor. While still delicious, it is rather subpar. I'll be skipping this next time.

One of the nicer hefeweizens I have come across. Not quite up to the level of Weihenstephaner, but you can't go wrong with this one either.

Worth a revisit.

Poured from the green 11.2 fl oz. bottle into a wheat ale glass.

Classic creamy off white colored head on the pour, nothing booming or large like a classic Hefe, but manages a half finger puck. Classic body color, not too dull or bright, opaque but a dull apricot orange and yellow, with lots of micro fine carbonation.

Classic hefe nose. A real great solid aroma that is nicely spicy and aromatic. Mild banana and nutmeg sweetness. Hints of cream a bit as well. A real nice simple and very enjoyable nose and we have luckily also avoided the skunk monster.

Real nice simple palate. Spicy hits bubblegum like aftertaste for the flavor. Mid palate washes in a mild chewy malt density with tangy notes of lemon and bubblegum controlled sweetness but not overly so. Some spiced after phenols more on the nutmeg side of sweetness and staying away from hot and classic brown spice. Nice hints of lemon and lime like finish to match. Palate comes into more lighter body with not a good chewy wheat depth but still pretty solid.

This really surprised me, for such an assuming small bottle, and it's packaging. A nice little hefe that comes off with some real surprising character.

The beer pours really nice and has a wonderful finger or two of whipped cream head.
The faint smell of banana is just enough to make your mouth start to water, and when you take the first sip, you'll know why this is THE go to Hefeweizen! The mouthfeel is refreshingly smooth and clean. Overall this beer is one of the best wheats out there.

Light pure white head, sizzles down to an even surface swiftly, the lacing is somewhat chunky which makes its presence better known as it does not cling much. The liquid is a hazy yellow gold color, not many big bubbles but they are large, overall looks the part. Banana, bubblegum, cherries and strawberries in the nose alongside hay and wheat, slight metallic undertones, spicy but the white citrus a touch mute, it has a thick texture and really fills your nostrils. Full-bodied and on the heavy side in the mouth too, sweet enough to enhance its clinginess. Clove, yeast and quinine tease out more white grapefruit but also likely diminish the apricot, cherry fruit. The banana and bubblegum tamer as well, the bitterness of the metallic earth and matted grass matter take ground. Carbonation is so-so, not sufficient to break up its solidity. Expectations were for a more refreshing experience. Seems muddled about what it truly wants to express. Yet, drinkable in its own right.
