A: cloudy pale amber/straw with a bouyant, persistent fluffy eggshell head; a few lines of lacing
S: tangy, zesty citrus, wheat, and yeast; mild clove
T: bready, orange, mild spice/clove
M: a little watery, slightly oily yet dry
O: An excellent if not superlative hefeweizen. No off notes, a pleasant aroma and taste, and a beautiful initial pour.

On tap, poured into a 1/2 liter dimpled mug at the Hofbrauhaus in Las Vegas, NV.

Appearance - Big hefeweizen head that disappeared pretty quickly. Extreme clarity.

Smell - Slight sour smell. Bananas.

Taste - Slight sour taste. Bananas. Slightly sweet. Slightly acidic.

Mouth - Fine carbonation. A little oily.

Overall - A fine beer but lacking in any real personality. I repeatedly used the word "slight" in my review because the characteristics of this beer are so subdued. Maybe this is desirable if you plan on throwing back 10 or 15 of these bad boys (which I'm told the Germans are wont to do). A beer that is less than the sum of its parts.

A-Poured perfectly into the towering Hofbrau glass. It's cloudy, yet bright yellow in color. Head is a dense concentration of tight, white foam. Leaves noticeable amounts of lacing.

S-Quite soft in the aroma. Soft banana notes with minimal spice. Some sweetened wheat notes are present as well. A hint of bubblegum.

T-The flavor is also quite tame. It almost seems watered down during some sips. Subtle flavors of banana and banana flavored yogurt are present. The clove and bubblegum are more noticeable in the flavor. Finishes with a mostly sweet wheaty maltiness.

M-Light bodied with large, soft bubbles. A bit watery. Very easy to put away. Flavors do not linger.

O/D-An easy drinking Hefeweizen that I would probably not order again. It failed to pique my interest during any point of consumption.

Hofbräu München Hofbräu Hefe Weizen
,33l green glass bottle, dated "L 268 M 11:01"

Appearance: Hazy, not cloudy yellow-gold body beneath a head of bright white foam. Lacing and retention are just about average for a Bavarian Weizen.

Smell: Wheaty malt, yeasty phenolics of bubblegum/clove and mild banana, fruit... some of which is citrus.

Taste: As the aroma suggests. The malt is delicately sweet, and threaded through with a nice balance of yeasty phenolics. More banana appears but it's still not strong, and the other fruits found in the nose are stronger as well (apple, blackberry, some orange... there's a bit of pith as well as tart juice). There's a bit of plastic, or "Band-Aid" as well, and that helps to balance it as it's only moderately bitter. Upfront you find the malt, infused with phenols and fruit, followed by a more sugary-sweetness as it warms across the middle, and then finally, there's residual plastic, a pinch of pepper, dull clove, muted green banana, and a hint of yeasty chalkiness and citrus pith in the surprisingly dry finish.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium-light, and the carbonation level is elevated and bristling with very-fine bubbles. As it warms it foams in the mouth giving the illusion that it's fuller bodied than it is, and becoming slightly creamy.

Overall: It's kind of hard to fault except for the head retention and lacing. I think it sits halfway between the more phenolic and dry character of Weihenstephaner and one of the more sweet-banana versions. In that sense, it seems as if it would suit anyone who enjoys the style. I personally find the delicate spice and pepper quite nice, and really refreshing. On a hot summer day in the sun I'd most likely choose this over the more formidable maltly sweetness of a Franziskaner. A distinct, overlooked gem that's at least worth trying.

Nice and well. Well and nice. Raul is diggin' into this thang like King Kong on a banana. Clean like Candice Swanopoel after using a bar of Dove and smooth like Raul on a night on the town. Flavor is crisp and flavorful like Kate Upton eating breakfast.

Pretty pretty pretty good.
