Brilliant light golden, looks nothing like a dopplebock... Aroma reveals melanoidins, deep toasted and caramel malt notes. There's a touch of floral hop character. Flavor is toasted and nutty, lightly sweet, with a hint of diacetyl/toffee note. The finish is somewhat metallic and earthy. It's a little hot.

A helles doppelbock from HB clocking in at 7.5% ABV.

Clear and pale gold with a white head that doesn't last long. This could be mistaken for a helles lager if not for the sweet and boozy aroma. Honey and ripe stone fruit lend some depth to an otherwise straightforward pale malt aroma. The palate is similar to the nose: sweet pale malt up-front with a little fruitiness coming from the yeast. Grainy malt flavors and a bit of sweet honey appear in the finish. Bitterness is reserved, lending a mild grassy bite. There's a sharp alcohol presence that lingers on the tongue. A decent doppelbock overall, but not a great one.

On draft at Prost, Garden City, NY.

Poured a light brassy hue with a one finger foamy whoye head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell was dominated by round sweet malts.

The taste consisted of a soft sweet caramel with a metallic essence and a utilitarian hop.

The mouthfeel was toward the lighter side of the style.

Overall a lighter take on the doppelbock. Interesting.

Poured via tap into a half-liter mug. Poured a rich golden color with decent head retention. Aroma was of ripe fruit - bananas and apples - as well as a bit of light hoppiness and the alcoholic fragrance of classic German beer.

Taste was similar to the smell. Still the fruitiness, like a hefeweizen, especially the yeasty banana bread undertones. Also prevalent syrupy malts and a slight kick of hops on the finish. The slight burn of the ample alcohol warms after swallowing. Mouthfeel was slightly thick, rich, but not quite syrupy. Nice clean finish, but certainly not crisp. Overall pretty complex but not overwhelming. All the nuances come through. Would be a difficult beer for the novice drinker.

Had pint on draft in Downingtown, PA.

A: Dark amber color. Lighter than typical doublebocks I've had. Two finger head that dissipated quickly.

S: Strong aroma of malt, biscuit and slight alcohol.

T: Malty with caramel coming through as the beer warmed. I also noted some slight fruit that others have observed (dates?). Some bitterness from noble hops but no real hop aroma which is probably true to the style. Modest amount of alcohol heat but otherwise quite enjoyable from a taste perspective. It held its own when paired with a spicy pulled pork sandwhich.

M: Medium bodied and clean with a modest amount of carbonation.

O: This is a solid double bock. This is one of my favorite beer styles so I would probably rate it third among German double bocks behind Ayinger (#1) and Spaten (#2). I would definitely seek out again, especially since it seems hard to find.

Served on-tap at Pilsener Haus in Hoboken, NJ

A: Pours a crystal clear medium yellow in color with moderate to heavy amounts of visible carbonation and some dark golden yellow highlights. The beer has a finger tall white head that quickly reduces to a thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of bready and caramel malts with just a touch of grassy hops.

T: Similar to the smell, there are moderate to strong flavors of bready and caramel malts with just a touch of honey sweetness. That is followed by some grainy malts and just a touch of fruity yeast. There is a light to moderate amount of lingering bitterness.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Slightly dry in the finish. Crisp.

O: Overall the alcohol is just not as well hidden as I would have liked but it is hard to say exactly where you detect it... It is an OK example of the style but nothing really jumps out for this beer.

What German brewer wouldn't want to dabble in the dopple? After all, the style is one of the most storied in the beer world. Its elusive savory bread taste and satisfying sustenance signal the lenten season and quench the hearty thirst for bold lager worldwide.

Yet is bright gold color confuses the eye with a deep pilsner-esque appearance. With delicate honey, grain sweetness and floral honeysuckle swirling about the nose and saturating the early palate, its rich bready taste is lightly toasted and herbal.

Build much like a fatter maibock, the toasted flavors are light in order to allow the savory taste of fresh baking bread and high barley sweetness to emanate. Greatly satisfying in its full body and lavish honey taste, its own melanoidin-rich complexity keeps it from cloying.

Yet its malt-forward balance yearns for the toastier molasses, dark fruit and rummy character of darker dopplebock. And like maibock, its candied apple and pear tones are mead-like and decadently dessert-like, much like bread pudding.

Traditional to their core, Hofbrau shows remarkable experimentation and adaptation in giving the season a unique taste but honoring the yesteryear of brewing heritage; even if uncertainly is explained in this hybrid taste.

I had never heard of the Delicator, what's that like? Only one way to find out, order a half liter. On to the beer:

A few shades darker than gold in the body. The head on top is thick and frothy, leaving some good lacing that sticks around. The nose is hopped up, more specifically a sharp hop bitterness and light floral.

The hop attack continues. This is a very bitter tasting beer. Even I had to take a step back and adjust my expectations because of the bitterness. Lawn clippings and a small dose of pale malt provide the other notes to this one of a kind beer.

Not a bad beer, though not the most optimal beer for the mood I was in at the time. I guess that's what I get for not asking for a taster.
