Easy drinking lager, albeit a bit pedestrian: ("underwhelming" as one reviewer noted.) Although at times, an understated beer isn't necessarily a bad thing. Would most certainly choose this hands down over an adjunct, particularly if I didn't want the beer to compete with the meal, but wouldn't go to extremes to secure another. Did pick-up on a slight skunk note in the nose, which isn't one of my favorite things. Would like to try a few others in this style + other HB's as well.

One of my favorite Dunkel's. Best on tap or freshly brewed at one of their brew houses (Rosemont, IL). I am happy you can get it in most major cities now.

Had on tap at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich, served in a 1L stein.

L: Pours a deep clear mahogany color with thick off-white head that leaves ample lacing.

S: Malts and light hops. Slight molasses and brown sugar notes.

T/F: Clean and clear. Malts up front with mild sweetness and molasses. Hop bitterness at the finish. Moderate carbonation.

O: A very easy to drink Dunkel and a solid representation of the style. Great to experience first hand in Munich.

This beer is average out of a bottle, good on draft and excellent in Munich. If you can drink it in the states on draft, get it and enjoy. If you can get to Munich for a litre, even better!

Too much crystal malts for my taste. I would prefer it to be a little bit dryer as there is quite a bit of sweetness to this brew.

I think it's a little smoother on tap than in the bottle, but it's still good nonetheless.

As I've written before, nothing disagreeable by any means, but did little to impress.

Pours brilliant dark amber under a sturdy cream colored foam cap. Bread and light caramel flavors and aromas. No dark fruit or roast flavors. Medium body and medium low carbonation.

Dark in color. Smells and tastes like bread (from oats?) It tastes like sweet bread. Good medium body. Easy to drink, smooth and balanced. I thoroughly enjoy it.

Bottle at 40 degrees into shaker
Aroma of malt
Head large (5 cm, aggressive pour), light brown, frothy, diminishing to irregular frothy ring and layer
Lacing sketchy – some partial rings with stalactites, tiny to medium bubbles
Body medium brown, clear
Flavor lightly sweet and malty, hops kick in at the end for some light bitterness; no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate medium, creamy, soft carbonation

Tan with reddish/golden hues. Smells of roasted spices, not too strong. Overall, the beer is smooth with a light flavor. I tasted some toffee hints and roasted nuts. I would prefer it paired with food.

The color of this beer is a light brown. The aroma you get is a little bit of a spice smell and is weak. Tasting this beer it is kind of strong and overpowering with a tanginess to it.

Truncated notes below:

11.2 fl oz green glass bottle with boring label art and branded pry-off cap served cold into a pilsner glass at low altitude in Austin, TX. Reviewed live. Expectations are average.

APPEARANCE: ~3 inches wide. Khaki colour. Creamy, soft-looking, and fairly thick. Retention is pretty good - ~4-5 minutes.

Body colour is a dark copper-brown of average vibrance. Clean, with no visible yeast particulate or hop sediment.

AROMA: Caramel, wheat, cream, brown bread, Munich malts, pumpernickle, biscuity yeast.

A pleasant aroma of mild strength.

TASTE: Follows the aroma. Dark malts, wheat, Munich malts, cream, biscuity yeast. Simple but balanced, with a clean presentation of flavour. Shallow but cohesive.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, a bit creamy, and light to medium-bodied. Well-carbonated. Could be more crisp and refreshing.

Suits the taste generally well. Not custom-tailored to it. Doesn't elevate the beer as a whole.

OVERALL: A downable but underwhelming dunkel from Hofbrau, this will cater more to the tourist and export crowd than superior traditional offerings in the category. Can't hold a candle to the greats, but it's enjoyable for what it is.

12 oz. bottle poured into a pilsner glass.

L - Clear, dark brown color; Foam dome: 2-3 fingers high, really solid white and a distinct separation from the rest of the beer

S - Coffee, chocolate, and molasses

T - Chocolate, caramel, and soft bread notes. Kind of like chocolate chip pancakes

F - Smooth like a porter but light as a pilsner. Good session beer

O - This beer is like a chocolate bar at the check out line. Very affordable and very tasty with coffee and chocolate notes. Definitely will drink again.
