What a fun place! I'd originally dismissed this as nothing more than a tourist haven prior to my trip, but after stopping in...I have to say that I felt compelled to spend some time there! Maybe it's because I was a tourist, too...but this place has an atmosphere that's relaxed, crazy, and fun all at once.
Beers are great, but selection is limited. There's a Helles (best I've ever had, though), a Dunkel (good, but nothing amazing), a Weiss (really good), and a Radler if that's your thing. Compared to other spots like Augustiner or Paulaner that have a lot more options, this is a weakness...however at least the beers are really good.
Food is typical bavarian fare, but it's still quite good. Prices are solid, too. We had 2 sausage/sides meals, 2 litre mugs of helles and dunkel, 2 pretzels, and 3 weiss brews for 36 euros. In the US that evening would've cost twice that or more.
Service is nothing special, but if you're willing to occasionally accost your server...it's never an issue. The pretzel/donut girls are a nice bonus, too.
It might seem like a tourist spot on the surface, and while there are a lot of visitors I'd say over 1/2 of the people there are locals. Watch out for the "regular" tables in the self-service area in front, though. You could slip into one without noticing pretty easily...so pay attention. The locals will likely inform you pretty quickly, though. A safe bet for an English-speaking tourist (like myself) is in the back near the mug-holders.
It's a must-visit kind of place!
EDIT: Funny fact - I've been back to Munich 3 more times and no matter the circumstances, I always go back to the HB and I don't foresee that changing. I've talked to other Munich travelers and that seems to be a pretty common theme. Fact is, the prices are low, the beer is good, service is good, and it's fun. Plus on bad weather days, the massive amount of seating is a nice bonus. Don't ignore the HB because it's touristy.
