On a long weekend visit to Munich (December 2007), I deliberately avoided this place over the Sat/Sun and visited on a Monday at about 6pm. I was expecting something very touristy and overpriced. The reality was somewhat different.
The place itself is enormous; a cruciform shape with the band stage at the centre. Wooden tables (when you can get one!), and tables with tablecloths tend to be "Stammtisch" reserved for locals, unless the waiter sits you at one.
The Sandra Bullock lookalike waitress in Bavarian costume treated is with a degree of disdain at first. I did notice that when she saw that we were staying for more than one drink, she improved considerably in demeanour. I can't say that I blame them for attitude; the numbers of Japanese tourists who tramp through here, take photos and videos, and never even buy a beer. Okay, some do, but I saw some ask this pretzel waitress to pose for them (which she did), and then they shook her hand and left. Not even a euro tip!
I confess that we were sucked into its atmosphere. A couple of litres of their drinkable beer, and the will to leave decreases. And when the band play that fanfare, you are encouraged to stand and sing the toast "ein prossit, ein prossit, der gemutlicht keit" and then slam the stiens together and have a slug!
And at 6.60 per litre, it's one of the best "tourist" things you can do; music and waitress service included. I suppose they make a good profit on their pretzels (3.20) must be 3 profit.
As so many have said; this place is somewhere is a must visit. Just do so when it is quieter than the mania of weekend nights. I will be back, and I never thought i would say so. Nice to be proved wrong!

Visited in 2007 while touring Europe. This brewery had the traditional beer hall style. Very old Germany and Bavaria nostalgia, it was great to go for the experience. There are tables with names above them, DO NOT sit at these tables you will not be served and may be asked to leave. These tables are reserved for regulars, please be polite and sit at the other tables.
Luckily we knew this going in and had a great time. Nice atmosphere, good beer, and low prices seeing as you get a liter of beer.
