Welcome to Munich! We went in thinking "beer hall" and it was exactly that and more. Great lively Bavarian band, traditional serving maids and German foods. The locals were super friendly and helped us translate the menu and the fun and it was a great time.

You can tell this is a tourist place. None the less, there's a reason why so many people want to come here. From the bavarian live band to the delicious food and bavarian dressed waitresses, you do feel like your in the quintessential beer hall, which I suppose you are. It's great. I was there over the Euro Cup to watch a game with some of my buddies and we had a great time. The stuff is somewhat given the tourist price, but that's to be expected. Their food is to die for. Boiled potatoes and pretzels that will blow your mind. You have to get the big mug of beer and make sure to take pictures. Welcome to Munich!

With all the fame surrounding the Hofbrauhaus, it isn't just beer lovers who visit this place; it's a tourist destination. As the most stereotypical beer hall in a city that knows beer halls, no wonder it's so popular. It looks big on the outside, and it seems to get bigger once you walk in. There's a gift shop to the right as you enter, a big stage for bands to play traditional Bavarian music (and I got my share during lunchtime), and a sea of tables and benches throughout the first floor. I wouldn't be surprised if you could seat 500 people! If that wasn't enough, there's an enclosed biergarten with at least another 100 capacity, and a second and thrid floor (the top floor reserved as a dining and dance hall). Much of the ground floor was filled with a combination of tourists, FC Bayern, and Barcelona fans (this being gameday of the first leg of the semi-finals), and a few pockets of open tables which I targeted.

4 different beers on-tap (Urbock, Weiss, Dunkel, and Original Helles) plus a bottled non-alcoholic wheat. Despite the attraction of popularity of the place, the prices are reasonable for food and beer (one liter pours are €7.60). It isn't just the beer that they brew themselves, they also have their own butchery which makes their own sausage. No wonder my bockwurst and potato salad were agreeable.

Flagging a server took a little time, but to his credit, he was able to get my liter of beer and bockwurst out in a matter of minutes. But I get the impression that he was rushing me, as I was pay to pay right after getting my order. What if I decide to order another liter? Or maybe this is how they turn tables quickly at the Hofbrauhaus.

Classic beer hall. Classic beer. Classic Munich flare. Everybody should visit this place once in their lifetime.

THE destination that I HAD to visit when in Munich. I got excited just seeing the building. Walking in was the beginning of the experience. Bavarian culture at its finest. The band playing drinking songs, the benches, people from all over the world, good food and the beer made it a sensory bonanza. My wife and three sons accompanied me and enjoyed it so much that we did it again two nights later. The 1L dimpled mugs were awesome. The Dünkel was great. The food was perfect. Pretzels and wurst with the beer just made me happy. Like a kid in a candy store. Granted, the beer selection is somewhat limited but the beer is very good.
Absolutely a must in your beer life. If you are anywhere near Munich, make the pilgrimage and also check out the others in the neighborhood. Ayinger, Augustiner, Paulaner and Weisses are all nearby and worth the effort.

This place is something else, the Disneyland of Bavarian beer culture. Huge building with many different seating areas. Make sure to arrive somewhat early as it closes and empties out fairly early by American standards. Think of the Hofbräuhaus as more of an experience than a restaurant and you're on the right track. Where we sat there were tons of old wooden table crowded up with tons of people and even more beer. The raucous environment encourages socialization with those nearby. Food was good but expensive. All of this to the backing of a band busting out drinking songs and Schlager songs.

Downsides: expensive prices and average to poor service. Just remember you're not paying for the food/service, you're paying for the experience.

This place is incredible, everyone must go here at least once. The pretty good food, limited beer selection, and high prices make it difficult to recommend going more than once, but that one time you do go, oh boy, get ready to have a blast.

This was my 3rd time at the HB haus, but the first I took some notes to review it.

This is the atmosphere that makes Munich. The oompa loompa band in the background, and close seating that engages you to get to know your neighbors

The beer is great, the food great, and the selection is pretty good too. several beers available and most typical bavarian fair is on the menu as well as specials.

It was busy, same day as a FC Bayern soccer match, so in the defense of our waiter he pulled off some pretty good feats in terms of taking orders keeping a sense of humor and keeping fresh beers on the table.

Even our waiter told us that something undecipherable had occured in the kitchen and my food would be a while. over a span of nearly an hour, my kraut appeared, followed by my sommel knudel 30 minutes later, and finally my pork knuckle 30 minutes after than. Even the Germans sitting next to us said, "you know your dumplings tastes better when it is warm."

A Mass beer of Dunkel ran about 8 Euro.

I've been to Munich several times and I love the Hofbrau house.

Loaded with tourists and locals alike, everyone is friendly and always willing to strike up a conversation. The food and service great, especially considering how much and fast they're churning it out (and if ever in Bavaria, make sure to try a schweinhaxe at some point - it's the pork eating equivalent of sex).

The original German umpa environment, like any such environment it can be dangerous if you try keeping your drinking up with the band, so pay attention how fast it's going down. Otherwise you may get to experience the restroom floor "vomitoriams" first hand.

Stopped in here with some friends during our Oktoberfest vacation. The place was packed, witht ons of people occupying all of the tables inside and out. We walked through, searching for seats and finally landed some at a table outside. The outside area was like a nice quaint courtyard, with trees, cobblestone, an upper deck and a sheltered area. There were plenty of servers bringing beer tot he tables all night. They offered all the traditional beer choices of this style of party, including Marzen, dunkle, radler etc. Songs were playing and people were singing and swaying here. The inside seemed to be much more festive. We didnt try any food but the beer and atmospheric experience was wonderful.

If you ever find yourself in Munich, you must visit the world famous Hofbrau House.

The atmosphere of this place is what makes it famous. This is a large area packed with people from all over the world. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. The service was great as they got you your beer quickly. The selection offered includes all the major German styles of beer. I did not personally have the food, but from what I saw it looked promising. This is the type of place where you stop in for a beer and stay most of the day. A great place to drink and socialize.

I simply love this place and visited twice during my recent trip to Germany. This establishment is truly a beer mecca and is a must see if you're in Munich.

The Hofbräuhaus is a lively place and as soon as you walk in it is impossible not to be swept away by the upbeat atmosphere which is filled with an abundance of beer drinkers, traditional German music, and staff bustling about bringing people beers in large glasses. It is impressive how many of the large glasses some of the staff can carry at once. The selection isn't the biggest, but the beers offered are traditional German beers. I had the Hofbrau original and one of their darker beers as well. There is outdoor seating available which seems like it would be great in the warm weather (it was still a bit chilly when we were seated outside). The food was very good and I highly recommend the Mushroom Pot dish under the vegetarian section.

This place is not to be missed and I hope to go back again someday!

This is one of the beer meccas that every beer geek should try to visit at least once. The place is freakin huge and can hold up to 3,000 people (I was told this by a doorman). The first floor is where you will probably be when you visit the Hofbrauhaus and it is filled with long tables where you just sit and drink your beer and listen to the music and enjoy the atmosphere. The place is usually busy and filled with people singing and having a good time, you can feel the energy in the air and its contagious. The beer selection is not much but you come here for the experience more then the beer. The beers I did have were good and went down smooth. The mugs are half liter size so you get your moneys worth. In warmer weather you can sit outside in their courtyard and enjoy your beer. Awesome Place!

What a fantastic place.

Went there on a Friday night and loved every minute. The atmosphere was overwhelming, riding high with the energy of the band and the crowd that overflowed through the hall. The quality was great, and the servers were even better. They were understaffed while I was there, but they were giving it their all with sweat dripping off them to get us our beer in a reasonable time. The selection was simple and excellent and the food was really good too. Not a cheap evening, but very worth it.

My two lifelong buddies visited Munchen and this is the first place on our list of places to go. We ended up frequenting Hofbrauhaus three times during our stay. Wow. We visited Europe in mid to late April. Not crowded anywhere but here. We sampled all of the beers but our favorite ended up being the hefewissen's. This place is so international. We met Germans, English, Australians, Swiss, and Brazilians. The Germans were incredibly friendly and one even brought us soccer tickets for a match the next day. The place was crowded, lively and fun. The oumpa band was playing and the overall atmosphere made it easily conducive to drinking great German beer with friends. One of my all-time favorite places and memories.

I can't believe it's been almost 2 months since I was there during Oktoberfest! Went there just to check it out before heading to the Oktoberfest grounds, ended up staying for 5 hours.

Place was jammed in the middle of a weekeday afternoon, but to be expected during Oktoberfest. Was a little chilly and we ordered our first beer on the patio, were contemplating leaving until we walked by a table with a group of people getting up. SCORE! It's on!

A traditional Bavarian band was doing there thing and getting the crow going, we were instantly warm, and the 1 litre beers, or Maß, were flowing. I remember having a few of the Dunkle, the Hefe Weizen, and of course the Oktoberfestbier. FANTASTIC! Way to caught up in the moment to bother with beer reviews, but I was so glad to have some variety after the stead stream of 'festbier' on the grounds .Had a giant pretzel help soak some up.

Only knock was that we tried to ask our server about food and he basically ignored us, granted it was jam packed, but the food looked really good, and we just ended up sticking to the beers.

A must visit in Munich no matter what time of year. With my drunken Canadian comrades we immediately began pondering why we don't have a place like this at home, and wondered if it would be as big a hit there.... then we ordered another. PROST!!!

For a destination place, this place is great. Who cares about how much stuff costs or whatever when you are here in Munich it is fun as hell. The wierd part for me was not being seated. I guess you just have to sit anywhere and maybe even join people and enjoy their company. Everyone was super friendly and I had a blast. The selction of all three beers was not like a typical American bar, but it is not an American bar. The selection was perfect for this area and all I wanted to drink were liters of hefeweisen all night long. The dunkel and lager were also good, but we were there for just the experience of it all. It could get crazy in there with a puke sink in the bathroom, but that just means everyone is having fun.., Loved it would go back

Visited this place yesterday despite the number of people telling me it was a tourist trap.

The menu comes in both English and German which was convenient. Service in most German restaurants sucks compared from what I am used to but this was a little better than I have experienced. You get an Erie feeling as this was once the hall where hitler gave his speeches during the second world war. The atmosphere was great, despite the hundreds of tourists. Beers ranged from half a liter to a full liter and they had about 5 or 6 on tap including their esteemed Oktoberfest. The beer was very fresh and served in the appropriate glassware. The Oktoberfest was good, but unlike the others I had on this trip. I also had their weisse bier which was refreshing. Foodwise there is a big selection of traditional German fare but there is another tourist trap with ordering pretzels as youngest specify which size or you will be gettin getting the huge one. Food was a bit pricy but in line with what I had been paying. The crowd was fun, but if you want some authentic Bavarian beer drinking times hit up one of the brewery owned restaurants or another biergarten.

A must visit place for any beer lover. I was here twice about 10 years apart, and it seems to have become more touristy over the years(but that adds to the atmosphere). Its great to enjoy quality food and beer with new friends (table sharing) and see many different cultures of people gathering for the same goal.
The music, huge hall and fast pace servers add an exciting twist to relaxation. Everyone had a smile on their faces as we people watched.

The only negative was that the first trip our portions were much larger than then last visit. I was boasting about how much food came out on the Oktoberfest platter 10 years ago, so I ordered it again and it shrunk about 30%.
Oh well, I was there for the fun mostly.
They do only have a few beers to choose from, but it's OK, its German beer.

I will go back every time I go to Germany, since it is easy to get to from most Cities that I visit and the country scenery is great during the travel.

I went to Munich for Oktobterfest in Sept. SO MUCH FUN! I camped out and meet some really cool local german college guys. We went here for a "mass" as they call it. Never heard the word "stein" come out of there mouth once. We got there and it was packed. Life music, chanting, the whole nine.

We looked around for a few minutes for a seat and found a table in the beer garden. It was amazing. I had the Hofbrau dunkel..an entire liter :) The menu is full of great german food aswell as beer. This place is awesome, the most famous beer hall in the entire country. YOU HAVE TO GO!!!

With my girlfriend and a another couple we went here on our trip to Europe because we were told this was a must visit beer hall in Munich. This place was huge and rich in history, more then one live band playing at the same time and that gives you an idea of how big this place was. We sat at a massive table with several other groups from all over the map and even snorted some snuff with an old German lady. A small selection of decent beers for the boys and a lemon beer mix for our ladies served in a massive mug (my profile pic is the mug in question) a great novelty and what I imagined a German beer glass to look like. I ate a bunch of meat and was well fed with pretzels being served by pretty young German girls who seemed embarrassed by their traditional outfits that were clearly put on for the tourists like myself. At the end of the day we had a blast here just drinking and talking to the locals and tourists alike, not where a beer geek would go to sample a bunch of brews in a quite environment but if you want to laugh drink and be merry this place is a must.

It's been said, this is a must see in Munich, It's very huge and classically Bavarian and when I was there they even had a band playing so it's quite fun. If you're by yourself or with a small group sit at one of the big tables and chat with the other people, you'll meet locals and tourists from all over the place, I at lunch with a guy from Switzerland who was biking around Germany and had a great time.

The beers here are all solid but fairly standard German Lagers and you can get them by the liter! The food is very reasonable, I got the Bockwurst with potato salad and it was really tasty and went very well with a liter of helles.

Don't limit yourself to this beer hall but make sure you check it out.

I had been to the Hofbrauhaus almost a decade ago with my friend, so I wanted to show my wife what this place was all about while we visited Munich. So, this was stop number two on our first day for dinner. Walked in and did a quick loop to size up the table situation and soak in the atmosphere. The place was in full effect for Oktoberfest. Managed to snag a side table sitting near a nice couple from Frankfurt. Service was quick and prompt, but it was a bit annoying to have to pay after each round of beer and food. Waitress said it was due to Oktoberfest crowds. We each had a mass and a great plate of sausage and enjoyed the oompah band. Later, we were joined by a bunch of fun guys from Prague. Beer, sausage, music, comraderie....it all added up to a great night at the Hofbrauhaus. It's a bit touristy, but you just gotta go for the history of the place.

The Muenchner Hofbraeuhaus is obviously a Classic - no matter how you look at it. Was there last Monday for lunch during my stay in Munich. We enjoyed some Mass and also got food. All we got were good, including the pretzels. Service sucked at our table and the two tables next to us since the waiter seemed to be confused about his own handwriting, but every other table nearby seemed to get good attention with fast service. The place was crowded as always but still managed to find a spot easily. By far the biggest tourist trap in town but still a must see!

The famous Staatliches Hofbräuhaus is about 2 blocks I'd say off from the main street Maximilianstraße, 3 from Max-Josef-Platz, and 2 from the Marienplatz so its in a prime location. I sat in the hall where it was pretty packed and raucous.

It was a great atmosphere to watch a show, eat, and most importantly drink. I had a liter of Original and half of the Radler. Both were delicious.

The show was cheesy but somewhat enjoyable, though I didn't get selected to join the act.

The food was mediocre and the lines to get it were confusing and people were pushy and generally rude trying to get their favorite dish.

The serving staff was pronto on any order of beer I made.

Overall it's a good stop in Muenchen but next time I'm going to explore one of the other big brewery restaurants including Ayinger's.

I was here in November of last year and had an absolute blast. My girlfriend, who was with me at the time, had a great time with the beer atmosphere, which means it's everyone-friendly. I had a liter of the Dunkel and she had a half liter of the Weiss and I had an additional half liter of the original brew as well, and all were pretty awesome examples of the traditional German brews.

The vibe and atmosphere are not just cool, but really like a party that you can't help but get swept up in. From the huge hall filled with tons of tables and long benches, you eventually just have to plop down and get cozy with some new friends. We sat next to an Irish and Mexican couple on our right with two Ghanians on our left. Really, it's a melting pot all enjoying a fun atmosphere.

The pretzels and pork knuckle were really good, but the pretzels were way more expensive than other places, but huge and delicious nonetheless. A liter of beer was like 8euro, which is not bad at all, and I had a great time chatting, drinking, and socializing with the crowd. The selection is limited, but the quality is awesome and the food above-average. If you're in Munich, there really is no excuse not to have a brew (or five) at the Hofbrauhaus.

It's right next to the Hard Rock Cafe. If you're one of those people who go to New York City and visit the Hard Rock, you'll love this place. I, personally, think it was way too touristy and full of loud, obnoxious Americans. I'm only one out of those three, so it wasn't my crowd. We decided to head across the street to Ayinger's instead. We were very happy with that decision.

(Full disclosure: we were in town for Oktoberfest. If we didn't experience the fest, it's possible we wouldn't have found this place so cheezy by comparison. We also probaby would have stayed here longer, seeing it's as close to the Oktoberfest feel as you can get without actually being on the Wiesen.)
