75cl bottle from Brussels. 2005-2006 on the neck. 6.5% abv.
A - A big, frothy, off-white head retains forever atop the apricot/nectarine hazed body. Tons of bubbles rip through my St. Feuillien balloon.
S - Belgian yeast on the back end, and MAJOR wild yeast notes throughout. Barnyard, socks, just... funky. Wet grass. Gueuze-y.
T - Quite tart up front but fades quickly. Doesn't stick to my lips like I enjoy in a robust gueuze. Big, wild notes, as well as a nice mineral water quality that adds to it's relatively tame complexity. As a beer, it's nice, but I've had better gueuzes. The more I get into it, the more tannic it becomes, with major leather notes on the back. Pink grapefruit juice nearing the end of the bottle.
M - Light bodied with a crisp, smooth, creamy carbonation. The nucleation site in this glass helps ease the bite. Still quite spritzy.
D - It's not gonna be hard for me to get through this bottle, but I could see how it could tire some people out.
Notes: Overall, a solid effort and a solid gueuze. Really holds well to the style, just somehow falls short in a couple aspects.

Big and Belgian, that's how I like them. Not in a gay way. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just sayin'. It pours cloudy gold with a soapy white head that shows no sign of letting up before I'm ready to go further. It smells of oranges, peppermint, hay, and a barn. A particular one, not just any one. But I will keep the location secret. Just to be that way. The taste is sour cherries, grass, and a nice bready finish. This is a phenomenally balanced flavor. Not too sour, not too sweet, not too dry. It is the goldilocks of geuze. If they start putting that on the label, I get credit. The mouthfeel is soft, slightly tingly, and light. Overall, I really feel this is a fantastic beer. It may be the best I've had. Nice, nice job.

Delightfully mellow and quite dry lambic served up from the southernmost of the lambic breweries in a 375 ml bottle at everyone's favorite Belgian sports bar Camping in Beersel. Bottle features a green label with a red sash and reads "Oude Boon Geuze L'Ancienne." Pours into a Boon Geuze glass (think basic bar tumbler) a pretty golden orange with a thick and lasting white head. Bottle indicates that this is an 05-06 bottling. We consumed it in August of 2008. Aroma forecasts a very sour beer with loads of lemon-lime citric character and some red fruit along the lines of cranberry sauce or perhaps gooseberry jam. Body is quite sour and slightly bready with a citric hoppy finish. Taste is heavy on the lemon and the horsehair funk. Yum. Corky woodiness, tannic acid, and green grass follow. Solid and enjoyable but not exceptional.

Aroma: Sour and barnyard with a pleasant apple and hints of grapefruit. A horsey, goaty aroma immerges after a sitting for a few minutes.
Appearance: A golden straw color with excellent clarity and aggressive effervescence. A thick, mouse like white head that is very slow to dissipate but never goes away.
Flavor: a nice clean, sharp sour flavor that brings out the hint of grapefruit that’s in the background. A bit of malt and wheat flavor and a hint of sweetness. A long finish on
Mouthfeel: It has a light body and is highly carbonated but it isn’t thin.
An outstanding, balanced gueuze that I really enjoy. The funky, heady aroma let you know you in for a real treat and flavors aren’t overly aggressive but a bit of barnyard funk and defiantly sour.

Boon Oude Geuze A L'Ancienne. 25cl bottle. 7%ABV. This is the 2008-2009 vintage (brewed in 2008, and bottled in 2009) poured into a stange glass.
Appearance: Pours a clear golden color. Rocky two-finger, white head.
Smell: Bright lemon acidity. Funk+Barnyard, and a faint hint of oak. Finishes with a musty earthiness, like a basement.
Taste: Starts off with some sharp funk and horse blanket taste. A moderate amount of acidity. Light tartness. Refreshing like a nice champagne. Touch of sweetness that balances out the acidity. Grainy wheat.
Mouth feel: Medium-light bodied with a low carbonation. Glides gracefully and wet across the tongue.
Overall: A nicely balanced gueuze. Refreshing, light, tasty. An above average representation of the style, but not without flaws.

375ml green bottle with a best before date of April 2nd 2028!!! This is the 2005-2006 version (A L'Ancienne).
LOOK: Bubbly clear golden
SMELL: Musty, tart, horse blanket, peppermint, herbal, yeast, lemon peel.
TASTE: Very smooth, lemon must, dried grass, herbal, mild barnyard funk, slightly tart, earthy, bone dry.
Very drinkable as the tartness does not overstep the rest of the beer. Bottle conditioning proves to give the brew ample smoothness. Funk is modest and unfolds a bit more when the liquid warms up. A great Geuze that won't kill you palate, a remarkable beer.

When I took the cage off of this bottle Boon Oude Geuze, the cork practically slid off on its own. The cork softly popped off and yielded a bouquet of bretty aroma as I poured the golden beer with ample white foam. There was a solid 2 inches of foam in the snifter I was drinking out of and almost 20 minutes later when I was finishing the beer, there was still a cm of white head adorning the slightly hazy honey-colored beer. The beer smelled very funky, sour and fruity: slight band-aid/plastic aroma, cat pee, kilned oak/cork, crisp apples, and white wine.
The beer tasted a little tart initially but tasting was slightly inhibited by the roaring carbonation. There is definitely an oaky tannic bitterness that is accompanied with a musty, earthy cellar component. The beer finishes sweet with an apple peel fruitiness and sweetness. This is a very tasty beer with ample complexity. I'm glad this is so easy to find and relatively inexpensive ($6 for 375 at Whole Foods). As I continue trying more sour beers, I'm anxious to find out how this holds up as aI experience more.

Appearance: gold yellow color, fizzy white head, hazy from bottle condition
Aroma: sour apple, pale malt sweetness
Taste: sour light fruit notes of apple and pineapple, bitter finish but the fruit sourness plays the most into the taste
Mouthfeel: medium-high carbonation, medium-light body,
Overall Impression: Definitely a distinct taste from the Lambic style brewing process, this beer exhibits strong sour apple and pineapple notes while still remaining very drinkable and refreshing.

Boon Oude Geuze 750mL into my Rodenbach Grand Cru glass.
Appearance (4/5): Golden-orange and a towering three-finger head of foam. Great head retention; the head reduces to a quarter inch disk. Very nice looking beer.
Smell (4/5): Effervescent and floral smelling, funky and tart. Maybe a little berry flavor rising from glass.
Taste (4.25/5): There's a quick hit of bitterness, but this subsides quickly. Floral and berry flavors predominate. The funk in this mildly tart beer calls to mind the effect of Brettanomyces, though I don't believe geuze features that type of bacteria. The flavor in Boon's Oude Geuze is nice and clean and fruity, and not heavily yeasty.
Mouthfeel (4.5/5): Boon Oude Geuze features an excellent champagne-like mouthfeel that really makes the beer pop and covers up the light body. Excellent stuff that tingles and and accentuates the clean, funky, tart berry fruit flavors. Refreshing! The best aspect of this beer.
Overall (4.25/5): Boon Oude Geuze is a quality beer that is one of the more affordable offerings in the geuze style category. Recommended for summer drinking especially...forget that light lager, wheat beer, session pale ale stuff. Get down with the geuze!

A - Slightly murky yellow body with a huge, thick head that takes a decent amount of time to dissipate.
S - Tart aroma; very fresh and pleasant compared to other earthier offerings. The exact aroma is subjective, but I would best equate it to a *very* sour apple.
T - Absolutely amazing- wonderfully tart with hints of apple. Not overpoweringly sour but with a crisp, tart, finish.
M - Quite a bit of carbonation helps make this a very light, refreshing drink. I've tasted varieties with very little carbonation that just don't seem to be quite as drinkable as this.
O - An amazing authentic geuze that's also reasonably priced (in my area, that is). If you prefer little-to-no carbonation or very earthy/barnyard-ish tastes, this probably wouldn't suit you, but if you're a fan of the higher carbonation level many Belgian varieties have and are looking for a wonderfully tart and crisp beer, this is definitely worth trying. Of the various geuze offerings I've tried (F. Boon, De Dochter, Cantillon, Lindemans, Hanssens, and Oud Beersel), I would rank this second to only the Boon Oude Geuze Mariage Parfait.

375ml caged and corked bottle. 2011/2012 brewing season.
This beer pours a cloudy medium golden apricot hue, with three fingers of puffy, thinly foamy, and fizzy off-white head, which leaves some sudsy arched lace around the glass as it lazily abates.
It smells like old cheese dipped in white wine vinegar, served over wood chips, and chased with a shot of stale lemon juice. The taste is more generally laid-back vinegar, if that can be called a thing, soft woody oak notes, maybe an echo of vanilla, a further perky lemon acidity, a bit of apple cider "sweetness", trod-upon pale malt, and a middling dank funkiness. Some weird earthiness seems to set itself away from the wood and yeast - I'm going to attribute it to some hops, sadly locked in the cellar.
The carbonation is just frizzy enough to state its presence, and allow its slight frothiness to quell some of the acidity, it would seem, the body medium-light in weight, and actually fairly smooth, all other things being equal. It finishes even a wee bit off-dry, the malt asserting itself amongst the lingering funk, and fading tartness.
A duly balanced, rather easy-drinking (relatively, of course) gueuze. The acid, funk, malt, fruity yeast, wood, and well, alcohol, I'm guessing, all work together splendidly in making that happen. Very nice stuff, but I fear that the lack of overt zippiness will be a cross to bear for certain sour fans out there.

A hazy pale platinum color, jazzy and fizzy look active high-rising crystal white head, full of life with 1/4" fizzy head at all times!
funky, sharp grass, fresh herb garden, "perm" chemical, sour green grapes, granny smith apples, citric tingle on the nose; concord grapes just past prime, hard cider, corriander and white pepper, abundant and bold yeastie aroma!
The first thing i notice is the incredible feel, dry, effervesant and jazzy...the look and feel of this brew makes me happy. The liquid just dances on the tongue with light, golden wheat in the gentle malt bite, green garden herbs and grass for hops and a crystal clean, mineral-filled spring water effect. The natural, wild yeast is the star of the show, highly complex with funky citric-like sharpness, green apples and peppercorns pop out of the yeast in subtle ways. a sharp medicinal-heat and funk pop out but only adds to the flavor spectrum's already enjoyable flavor's.
i have grape farmers from the champagne region in france that goes back to 1609 in my bloodline so you know i love a brew that is very close to the product that made the area famous. I'm in love.

I (we) had and excellent tasting session at Erik's place on the 11th of December 2011. Jeff and Erik organized it together. I am not a fan of sours but it doesn't keep me from trying. This beer was a test for something different though. I met PP from 'de Molen brewery' a couple of weeks ago and he said; if you would have seen me during the Borefest Beer Festival, you would have seen me with two glasses. One filled with an sour and one filled with some heavy brew. The sour is excellent to cleanses your palate for the next heavy beer, he said. So that's worth a try, and the Jeff&Erik beer tasting was a good occasion. You see/read the line up on my review of; the Brewery - Black Tuesday.
I got this bottle from my brother in law; Maarten, thanks man, but next time don't bring sours, haha.
A - An amber looking beer with a yellow-white head on top. Not bad to look at, certainly not, because there are also some carbonation bubbles racing through the fluid.
S - What do you expect? Sour of course - a fresh and sweet malty oder to be exact.
T - Again what to expect? A sweet sourness, not to bad though. For a sour is actually quite good and there is some flavor to be discovered as well. Definitely some citrus thats for sure.
M - A lot of carbonation (the advise from Michael was to open it outside, as we did. Not a bad advise by the way, as we were about to discover when we opened another sour inside :))
O - Certainly not bad for a sour! Did it work? I think after having a sour everything else tastes way better, haha. Maybe I am still not experienced enough. I'll keep trying now and than.
