375mL bottle poured into a Lindeman's flute. Best by 23-09-2030. 7% ABV.

Appearance: Poured slowly to leave the sediment in. Bright dark gold with a persistent off-white rocky foam on top. No lacing.

Smell: Musty, hint of tart apple and maybe some berry in there towards the back.

Taste: Very tart and sour, but not mouth-puckeringly sour. Granny smith tart apple, oak, a hint of very tart cherry in here as well. Some tart lemon comes out as well as the beer warms up. Definitely better as it warms up.

Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated, but not fizzy. Spicy on the tongue, airy. Just a bit of something sticking to the teeth at the end. Very dry.

Overall / Drinkability: I have heard that this beer is an acquired taste, and I don't think I've fully acquired it yet, but for style, it is a very intense lambic and is very sour and tart. Still, an interesting experience but I think one per night is enough. Perhaps another time I'll revisit this style and see if I feel differently about it.

2011 bottle. Poured from a small bottle into a Duvel snifter. Beautiful crystal-clear gold color with fairly low carbonation. On the nose, I'm getting sour apples and white wine and a little bit of wet, grassy kind of aroma. There is also a little bit of that funky, wet sock kind of smell.

Light body and firm mouthfeel. Nondescript sour flavors and notes of under-ripe apples, fresh lemon, and grapes predominate. I also detect something like thyme. The acidity is not vinegary or over-bearing. It's pleasant, not too mouth-drying, and somewhat appetizing. There is a faint oakiness on the finish.

Flavor-wise, I enjoyed this beer and think it is excellent. My main gripe with it is the low carbonation. I think higher carbonation would open up the palate a bit more and complement the flavor nicely. Moreover, the sourness seems a bit one-dimensional (fruit). I don't have a lot of experience with this style, but I would like to try a gueuze with a bit more complexity.

Bottle says 20/01/2031, which suggests to me that it was bottled January 2011. Tasted 1 July 2012, reviewed from notes.

Pours a golden orangey-yellow color. Very clear, with about 1 finger of white head, all big bubbles. Tons of carbonation visible in the glass.

Smell is a musty, yeasty aroma, with a little bit of sour and a light sweet kick. Better than the taste, but didn't wow me.

Taste has a touch of lemony sour, but a whole lot of bitter and straw-like flavors, without the complexity and sour I'm looking for. Finish is mildly bitter.

Mouthfeel is good. Light-bodied, plenty of carbonation.

An okay gueuze, but not my favorite. Generally dull, without much sour or depth, and dominated by the wrong flavors, IMO.

375ml corked and caged bottle served in my ST tulip. 24-06-2030 indicated on the back label. Pours a light, golden-orange hue with a slightly hazy clarity and a three inch bright white head that sizzles and pops and quickly disperses within seconds on the pour. Head eventually settles into a consistent 1/8th inch cap. Some lacing is present, but there's no adhesion. Nose reveals citrus zest, vinegar notes, cork and tart light stone fruit. Taste follows nose; however, considerably less tart and sour than suggested by the nose. There's also a slight cardboard taste in the flavor profile. Mouthfeel is light in body with a lively, palate cleansing carbonation as well as a slight acidity that lightly stimulates the salivary glands. Overall, a decent and accessible gueuze, but nothing overly spectacular. I'd go with Lindemans Gueuze Cuvée René or Hanssens Oude Gueuze over this one.
