2011 vintage

a - poured a 1/2 finger thick grayish head that was gone so quickly i barely saw it. the body was a dark reddish-purple color.
s - juicy and sweet raspberries, smells like fruit juice.
t - raspberries dominate with a hint of red wine grapes coming through. a hint of tartness at the front but more sweet than sour.
m - slick and medium with a dryness to it.
o - i wasn't expecting much and didn't get it. reminded me of a manishevitz wine. i won't go back to this one.

Boon Framboise would look like juice if not for generous pink froth swirling atop it. It can't be too hard to sell a beer when it looks like this; with a deep but clear cranberry complexion, it's as unique as it is pretty. With this much colour it's natural to expect a good amount of fruit.

The aroma is nowhere near as tart as an authentic, artisinal lambic - nor is it as sweet as a modern commercialized one. It strikes a fair balance between the two that might not totally impress fans squarely in either camp. There is some raspberry flavour but the berries don't jump out the glass; there's some basement/barnyard mustiness but no critters crawl up your nose.

The taste makes a similar compromise; it is sweet on the palate upfront but finishes rather dry and mildly tart, with a slight acidic tang. The flavour of the raspberries is far from saccharine or even all that juicy; it tastes like authentic fruit and not some concentrate or candy. A lesser portion of sour cherries are also added and contribute a pleasant pucker in the mouthfeel.

This Framboise won't quite cut it as a dessert unto itself, but its underlying tartness and spritzy effervescence make it a great partner to dark chocolate. It also has the light, fruity disposition to make a nice aperitif, something in lieu of champagne to welcome guests. (Of course, just the sun coming up is occasion enough to enjoy a traditional fruit lambic like this!)

I like Boon Framboise more than these scores may let on - it's only fault is not being as satisfyingly sour or seductively sweet as its compatriots. Still, it's a remarkably enjoyable offering, one worth the bigger price tag. And it's also a safe bet for initiates - this will make you plenty of friends.

(3.5) A: Clear cranberry red with a fingers worth of white head that quickly recedes to a ring. Lacing isn’t evident.

(3.5) S: Tart raspberry, apple, grape, grasses, and faint hefe-like qualities. Bit subdued and straightforward with minimal sourness but still pleasant.

(3.5) T: Tart raspberry, an element of sour – maybe more balsamic than lemon, orchard fruit, grassy grain, and faint cloves. As the aroma indicated, the flavour is good but straightforward and not that bold. However I do like the level of dryness and the fact this isn’t sweet.

(3.75) M: Medium bodied with a lively carbonation. Clean and fizzy on the tongue.

(3.5) D: This was good but not a lambic I would revisit given the generally subdued qualities. Just wish there were more lambics to choose from in Ontario stores.

375ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $6

Appearance - Burgundy colour with an average size fizzy/frothy beige head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some faint lacing. The head lasted for 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Raspberries, citric

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, citric notes and raspberries. There is also a hint of vinegar and it ends with a lightly tart aftertaste.

Overall - I can see this being a good intro into sours beers. Its got a light tartness but is in no way overpowering. Most of these types of beers are also a little cloying, this one keeps the sweetness in check. That being said, it is a little one dimensional - but decent and refreshing nonetheless. I'll pick up a few more bottles to have on hand to introduce others to the style.

From a 375 ml bottle to a snifter.

A: pours a deep red with a thin head that appears pink in color. The head breaks almost as soon as it appeared.

S: smells of ripening raspberries and other berries. Some funk as well.

T: super-tart raspberries overwhelm the palate. Not much else can get through.

M: medium body and medium/high carbonation. Sour finish is actually quite nice.

O: I found the tartness of this beer to be refreshing at first, but it became a little overwhelming toward the end. I am not sure I'd have this again.

A - Pours a dark, ruby red with a tall fizzy head of pink foam. Drops quickly.

S - Sweet fruitiness. Raspberries of course, a bare hint of funk. Supposedly this contains cherries as well, but I can't really tell the difference from just raspberries.

T - A little bit sweet, a little bit tart, a hint of bitterness in the back end. Mostly very clean. Fruit flavour is there as well as a lingering aftertaste that's bitter and fruity (like orange rind, but not orangey).

M - Fizzy, light and refreshing. I dare say a bit on the watery side.

O - Overall, I find this a little weak. Accessible, but not exactly bursting with favour.
