Did a vertical of the '13, '11 and '09 at Sloshfest 2013. Good times gents.

From a 750 into a mini singer
Review is for the '13 with notes about the other two.

APPEARANCE: Pours a medium sized white head with very good retention. Clear gamboge orange with medium levels of carbonation evident. Head fades to a foam cap that leaves some dots of lacing down the glass. Other years are a touch darker but virtually identical.

SMELL: Lemon acidity, tart apples and citrus aromas with a good base of moldy funky aromas. Some barnyard and grassy aromas as well. The other two vintages basically follow suit.

TASTE: Follows the nose well. Tart lemon citrus flavors, green apples, acidity as well, with a bold and lingering finish of lemon tartness, moldy funk and some barnyard as well. Pretty good. The '11 and '09 are softer with slightly less acidity, but these are all pretty similar.

PALATE: Medium body with slightly higher levels of carbonation. Creamy and light on the palate, smooth going down and finishes dry and puckering. Good feel.

OVERALL: This is a solid gueuze that perhaps doesn't get enough credit. What was surprising actually was that all the vintages were relatively similar. The '09 was perhaps the best, but there's no reason to believe that the '11 and '13 won't be there in time. Very consistent. Glad to have been able to try this set at once. Cheers gents!

750ml caged and corked bottle, 2013 edition. We'll all get by, with a little help from our friends, it would seem.

This beer pours a hazy, medium golden yellow hue, with three fat fingers of rather puffy, tightly foamy, and ethereally creamy eggshell white head, which leaves a bit of low-lying, ebbing surface tension lace around the glass as things gradually recede.

It smells of sharp, acrid acetic acid, of the fruit-borne type, though said fruit is hard to immediately discern - raspberry, lemon (by default), and denuded cherries, I guess - moderately funky farmhouse yeast, bready pale malt, underripe red apples, a touch of wet, grainy wood, and somewhat surprising leafy, grassy hops. The taste is tart, sure, but in a pleasantly diffused sort of way - lemon juice, muddled black berry reduction, a hint of actual cold cooking vinegar - a more laid-back funky yeastiness than suggested by the nose, some sturdy bready, slightly caramel-tinged malt, still mixed and matched orchard fruit esters, subtle moist barrel staves, and generally still game leafy, grassy, and musty hops. No real sign of the elevated alcohol.

The carbonation is quite understated, manifesting in a plain Jane frothiness for the most part, the body a stocky medium weight for the style, and smoother than the norm, given the affable distraction of the usually disruptive souring contingent, which even leads to a small airy creaminess. It finishes off-dry, surprisingly, the fruitiness thrusting off the shackles of tartness, joining with the long-burdened malt, to make a go of this as an actually balanced beverage of sorts.

All those different inputs, as originally opined, must have some kind of middling, blending, and in the end, neutering effect, a concept which is evidently on full display here. Distinctly drinkable and approachable for the style (mere price taggery aside), this 'Gueze [sic] Tour' is exactly that - an introduction to the whole shebang, all at once, in a mildly dumbed-down, touristy incarnation. Doesn't mean it doesn't taste good, IMHO.

Bottle into 3F stem. Vintage 2013.

Pours light gold, clear body, with lively compact eggshell colored head.

Aroma is super funky, cheesy, and citrusy. Humboldt fog, fresh lemon juice, chèvre, pungent horse blanket, and lime peel. Get that 3F and Boon character in abundance.

The palate comes off heavy in funk as well. A surge of fresh hay and earthiness join the funk and citrus characters. Plenty of sweet lemon, fresh goat cheese, tart apple skin, with subtle cattiness.

Mouthfeel presents a light body, higher end carbonation for the style, and very dry and astringent finish.

A great Gueuze that may not be better than some of it's individual components. Yet it surely delivers on many of the facets you expect from the best examples of the style. Super funky, bright, and a good level of complexity. Maybe a bit too aggressive with the lemon on the palate. Very nice nonetheless.

750ml bottle served in a tulip glass.

2011 Edition. Best before 28.10.2030. Bottle number 023099.

A: Pours a slightly cloudy orange color forming a big and bubbled white head. Quite fizzy with a lot of bubbled coming from the bottom of the glass. Medium retention, practically no lacings and a thin layer that remains forever on the top

S: Very fruity, citrus and flowery. Strong notes of oranges, apples, pears, vinegar, sweet pale malts, flowery hops. A bit metallic. Earthy Lambic yeasts

T: Very fruity upfront. Funky. Notes of oranges, orange zest, grapefruit, vinegar and flowery hops. Dry but very smooth Lambic. Delicious. The only defect is the end that is not very persistent for such a delicious taste

M: Light body. Very fizzy. Medium carbonation. Metallic, hoppy and fruity aftertaste

O: Perfect drinkability. Perfect Lambic
