Served from a 375ml bottle into a Crooked Stave Tulip. Vintage 2008.

Appearance- Dark redish/brown with some junk on the bottom of the glass. Quick 1 1/2 finger white/pink head that lasted a short while. Looks heavily carbonated which surprised me for 5 years old.

Smell- Super funky cherry and lemon rind, earthy tobacco. Smells similar to Allagash Cerise. Funky medicinal smell that I get in most lambics. Intriguing.

Taste- Funky cherry and stone fruit, grassy, earthy, lightly oak, finishes super lemony/limey. Way better than the normal Boon Kriek.

Mouthfeel- Heavily carbonated with no booze heat. Medium pucker. Semi-dry.

Overall- Real Impressed by this. Why can't the Boon regulars be this good?

This bottle was dated 1995 by far the oldest bottle conditioned beer I have had to date,poures a color of a ripe cherry with a thin white spotty head.Aroma of sour cherries and vinegar with a woodiness but its pretty faint,taste is tart but not as tart as alot of beers this style maybe because of the age also a light sherry flavor in the finish.A nice find not my favorite style but I kinda like this more than others.

375ml Bottle, 2008 served in Swamphead Snifter

I've had sparkling wines with far less pop, wow. The second I finished untwisting the cage, the cork flew off and across the room. I was definitely not prepared for that. It pours a rich burgundy color with a big pink-beige head that sticks around longer than I would have imagined -- this beer definitely brings the carbonation.

The nose is full of European cherries, sweet and tart. Underneath, there are characteristic Brut and belgian yeast notes. There's also a good, earthy backbone like an old world wine.

The tart cherries kick it up here; they're definitely first to the party and know they belong here. There's a champagne brut-ness here and a well-placed sourness, almost like a Geuze. It's not cloyingly sweet like I find many fruit lambics, and I absolutely cannot taste the alcohol. What a treat.

It's a little thicker than a lot of lambics, but the carbonation carries it perfectly. The liquid composition is phenomenal -- a perfect vessel for the flavor.

I grabbed three of these when a case came in -- just in case I thought it was especially good. I'll be going back today to grab another four to sit on. Considering the price and availability, I'd say this beer joins Cantillon's tier for lambics. I am very impressed.

Big thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this rare sour. 2008 vintage with a best by date of 10/8/28.

The beer pours a beautiful dark red color with a white head. The aroma is strong cherries but there is also some nice funk mixed in. One of the funkier smelling krieks that I have tried.

The flavor is a great mix of brett notes, barnyard funk, cherries and surprisingly, some alcohol. The tartness level is light to medium.

Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation.

Very glad I got to try this beer. It definitely lived up to the hype.

Bottle (2008)

Thanks for the gift, NoSignsOfPain!

A very dark crimson with almost no clarity and not a lot of visible carbonation. This looks a bit heavy and substantial for the style, and lacks the typical bubbles. This leaves the glass seemingly clean on the way down.

Nice enough aroma, though nothing is leaping out of the glass. That being said, there's good amount of cherry, earth, and mild wood character.

The flavor is better than the aroma, with distinct cherry notes and strong sourness. There's mild oak and some earthy funk character. The alcohol is very well hidden, as this is somewhat high in alcohol for the style.

Medium to full bodied for the style, with low carbonation.

An incredibly drinkable and tasty kriek, though not at all in the upper echelon of the style.

$7 at Whole Food Plymouth Meeting.

I've had an 08 bottle twice, once from a bottle shipped from Belgium and one from a bottle from a local bottle shop shelf. I think I enjoyed this much more the second time when I had a whole bottle to myself that I got from my local shop.

This beer is awesome. It's a an almost opaque cherry wood color with a huge head that leaves a very thin delicate lace. It's got great cherry aroma. There is a good bit of funky with sharp brett but also very bright fruit. There is a nice bit of perceived sweetness that helps ground the funk. Love it.

One word springs to mind here- exceptional. stinky barnyard earthiness in the aroma, quite vinous, almost pinot noir like, very complex, aged cherry skin, lovely lambic tart sourness, i absolutely love this beer.

2004 Vintage
(Served in a tulip)
A- This beer pours a deep dark cranberry hued body with a head of raspberry sherbet but soon fades away. There are a few microbubbles that pop up through the beer.

S- The dark tart cherry aroma has a hint of brie rind and some light barnyard hints that mix in with it but they remain very light. There is some fruit skins aroma in the finish.

T- The musty leaves hint is taken over by a dark cherry fruit flavor and some raspberry tartness mixed in. There is a cherry sourness that lingers after each dry sip.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a tight little fizz and no alcohol heat or astringency noticed.

O- The nice blend of fruit and tartness has some mellow hints of funk and the gentle fizz helps to enhance all the flavors. Very nice drinking beer.

Very dark burgundy red with a delightful pink tightly foamy head. Aroma is ultra smooth. Awesome cherry pie, softly tart, sweet, and fragrant. Creamy with something vanilla-like, plus musky wood. Taste is tart and smacky. Woody, musky, tart dry berries. Grape skins, astringent and puckering. Very well combined concoction. The word encrusted comes to mind... Very dry, implosively so, brightly and smoothly carbonated, almost chalky texture. Very nice.

Pours a dark cherry red. One finger head that quickly dissipates to a lace around the glass.

On the nose is cherries and cranberries. Very tart smelling. Some sour apple in the background.

Taste is very interesting. Fingernail polish type taste at the beginning. Some fruits present themselves towards the middle and end of the taste. A little bit of oak and some weird yeasty flavors.

Mouthfeel is close to perfect. Very nice carbonation. A little thick. Nice.

This is a great sour. Would definitely drink again.

2008 vintage. 375ml corked and caged bottle poured into a Cantillon tulip.

Standard pour yields a 2 finger fluffy light pastel pink head with moderate retention. Beer is a clear red. Lacing is non-existant. Pretty standard for the style.

Nose is tart and sweet cherries. Robust and deep though lacking any sort of funkiness or barrel characteristic.

Opens sweet and robust cherry. Some cobweb flavor mixed with a barrel presence. Woody towards the middle. Hay and band-aid round out the experience. Finish and aftertaste is cherry. Not tart and a bit overly sweet. At least the fruit is prominent.

Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Silky with some rough edges in the mouth. Goes down with some bubbles. Finish is clean with little to no aftertaste. A bit too carbonated.

As a fruit lambic, this offering is not very good. The cherries are prominent but there's little tartness or cheesiness that usually accompanies a top-notch offering from the style. A bit too sweet too. I won't revisit this one.

Vintage 2008 harvest.

Pours a dark cherry red with reddish pink head, thick at first, lingers.

Ripe cherry, some cherry pie filling, light oak.

Plenty of cherry flavor, a bit dank. Bold and ripe. Light oak and funk but cherry dominates. mildly sour.

Chilled, very carbonated. As it warms to room temp it mellows.

Quite impressed, like this far more than the gueuze version.

A great sour, but round beer (2008).

L: perfect lasting top; deep cherry brown colour;
S: creamy, light funky bretts, almond;
T: not the most complex beer in the world, but a melange of three/four feelings: cream, cherry ofcourse, natural sweetness (there isn't sugar in it, but I checked the label for it, because I couldn't believe it: so soft!), almond, perfect 'dying' sweetness, ending at the right time to invite you for the next glass;
M: lovely mixture of CO2, sourness, sweet touch and light feeling alcohol;
O: this beer could become even better if I would wait a few years? I'll try that! Looking forward already.
