poured into tulip glass.

Vintage 2008.

Nice loud pop when this C&C bottle was opened up.

Appearance: deep crimson red body with a big pink head. 2 fingers of head quickly fizzes away to a thin ring.

Smell: sweet cherries and oak. Slightly sharp vinegar note and a hint of wheat malt and funk.

Taste: moderately tart cherries with moderate funk. The fruit and funk in this beer are really well balanced together nicely. Oak barrel and a touch of vinegar. More wood, sweet cherries, lemons, and berries in the finish.

Mouthfeel: medium light bodied neer with almost moderate carbonation levels. Soft carbonation that is fairly smooth. As the beer crosses over your tongue a slight prickly carbonation gives life to the beer. Dry finish to this beer.

Overall: I would say this is very comparable to a cantillion in the flavor profile, but cantillion has a better mouthfeel. Really nice Kreik.

375mL bottle into tulip. Harvest 2008. Best Before 04.11.2030.

A: bottle opens without much of a pop. hazed. red if ive ever seen a red brew before. some reddish head starts things off. literally dies to nothing. no lacing.

S: acid. sweet sugar. sour cherries. pie. smells like a kriek.

T: a sweet/sour cherry flavor starts the brew off. tastes just like the middle of a sour cherry pie. awesome. leaves a lingering sweetness on your lips. reminds me of a cherry jolly rancher. besides an outer layer of sweetness, the acid dries everything else out.

M: carbonation is certainly on the milder side. medium body.

D: besides the shitty appearance/carbonation level, this is a pretty solid brew. matured lamic flavor with plenty of sour cherry aspects. the flavor was definitely the biggest standout aspect in my opinion.

2004 Vintage
(Served in a tulip)
A- This beer pours a deep dark cranberry hued body with a head of raspberry sherbet but soon fades away. There are a few microbubbles that pop up through the beer.

S- The dark tart cherry aroma has a hint of brie rind and some light barnyard hints that mix in with it but they remain very light. There is some fruit skins aroma in the finish.

T- The musty leaves hint is taken over by a dark cherry fruit flavor and some raspberry tartness mixed in. There is a cherry sourness that lingers after each dry sip.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a tight little fizz and no alcohol heat or astringency noticed.

O- The nice blend of fruit and tartness has some mellow hints of funk and the gentle fizz helps to enhance all the flavors. Very nice drinking beer.

Boon Kriek Mariage Parfait 2008. Best by 11/04/2030.

Pours a deep magenta color with a thin translucency. Not much light gets through this one, as it can be best described as cloudy. Lovely light pink head formed and fell. A very thin ring sits atop the beer almost three minutes after the pour.

Huge red wine notes and big tannins. Both dark cherry and black grape fermented fruits with moldy skins and a hint of lemon rind. Almost forgot this was 8% until I whiffed it. Funk is at a nice medium level with that mildewy basement odor to it. If there was just a bit more intensity to the nose, as a whole, I'd rate this higher.

Almost a hint sweet and with a lot of these really tart and convoluted fruits coming through. Tart pie cherry, black raspberry, Granny Smith apple, and very moldy lemon rind. A touch vinous (even has sour grape aspects) and funky (moldy fruits and age). This beer has aged gracefully thus far.

Medium-bodied with close to a milky feel, but with a very light carbonation that almost pushes the booziness to the front. Slightly warming, actually a sipper.

Tasted along with a '10 Cantillon Kriek, a '10 Drie Fonteinen Schaarbeekse Kriek, and a '07 Drie Fontienen Oude Kriek. Ranked in the bottom two.

2008 bottle...

Tart cherry aromas dominate the nose here as expected... this is quite nice... Doesn't smell artificial but rather has a nice cherry character that has a nice yeasty twang to it... I like it. Not a trace of booze...

Sour puckering tart cherries pretty much sums up how this beer tastes... Nice vinous aspects without being too sweet... This one isn't overly sour but I will say this... it's pretty damn sour... Not quite La Folie sour but it's reaching that way... I'm guessing the age has really brought the funk out in this and I'm actually very happy that I have access to this beer pretty much all the time in a land where sours are very few and far between. I'm happy with this...

I'm glad I decided to take a chance on this beer. I will probably make this one of my go to sours as I can readily find this beer. Nice!

2009 vintage, shared with my bride on our wedding day, bottled the year we met.

Pours deep red with a pink, sudsy head that settles slowly. Patchy lacing here and there on the sides of the glass. Aroma is dominated, as expected, by tart cherries, with lemon, balsamic vinegar, oak, apple cider, and a decent dose of funky mustiness coming in close behind.

Flavor follows the nose exactly; tons of tart cherry, follows by oak, sour lemony notes, and a pleasant funk characteristic that adds a nice bit of complexity to the proceedings. Vinegar is hinted at but stays at bay. Finish is dry. Medium-light bodied with medium-high carbonation; lively overall mouthfeel.

This is a solid, middle of the road kriek, by which I mean you get a nice dose of sour fruitiness without the over the top puckering power of the more extreme examples, but it also isn't a candy sweet fake attempt at the style. You can actually find on store shelves on occasion and it's not prohibitively expensive, two more factors to recommend it.

The color of beet juice, a little rusty, with a shocking pink head. Nice foam and well carbonated. Light body with an unmistakable woody taste and slightly sour bouquet.

While most of the sugar has been fermented out, this brew is not seriously sour. It's quite tart with a lot of the very dry, mineral taste of the Belgian yeasts. The fruit still seems quite lively and fresh. Some cherries in the nose. Delightfully drinkable and seriously intriguing beer. If you think too many sours are too sour, try this one. Another good education in Belgian styles.

From the bottle purchased at Beer and Gin House in Gent. The larger 37.5 cl bottle with cork. Label lists this as the 2011 harvest.

2008 bottling. Poured from a bottle into a Duvel snifter. The beer pours out clear and very dark ruby-red with a big rocky pink head that quickly dissipates. The nose has some tart cherries, wood, light funk, and red wine grapes.

Light to medium body and a fairly firm mouthfeel. The beer looks well-carbonated, but the mouth doesn't feel it. In the front of the mouth are sweet and sour cherries, some grainy wheat notes, and a nice sharp acidity. The acidity is evident across the entire palate, though the flavor of the beer never seems to develop into anything beyond the initial impression. The finish is dry, tannic, and mouth-drying, leaving you ready for another sip.

Overall, this is a very pleasantly sour, well-made, enjoyable lambic. It will not appeal to fans who judge these things purely by how sour they are. This one is too well-balanced. The acidity is not at all overwhelming. It is definitely far superior to Boon's standard Kriek and is well worth the extra dollar or two in price.
