This brew pours the color of pale golden orange. The head stands a finger high, and is composed of big white bubbles that disappear quickly. Little lacing is left as it goes. There is a full haze to the clarity of the brew, and particulates are noted throughout the glass. Carbonation looks light to medium. The aroma is wrought with clovey phenols and yeast. There is a little vanilla, and generous grain, but nothing sweet to really soften the edge. Faint orange and spice are detectable as well. As we sip a pleasing mix of malt and yeast hit the palate. The front, too, is actually sweetened a bit by a flash of sugary citrus. This lags through the middle where phenols crash in, bittering the flavor, with vanilla simultaneously softening things up far back at the base of the tongue. The finale is yeasty and metallic. These are muddled in a sea of malt, with peppery spice gluing everything together. The aftertaste breathes with cloves and phenols, and a touch of that same yeast. The body is medium and the carbonation is medium. The beer puts up quite a froth with each sip, and is creamy to the lips. The mouth is left dry by the finish. The abv is standard, and even a bit low for the style, but the beer drinks with simplicity.

Overall, what we found most enjoyable about this brew was the yeastiness. There were bold inclusions in the aroma and the taste, which for a tripel, were uncharacteristically bitter. This was not a bad thing, but there was some metallic flavoring in the finish that was less than desirable. This offering is clearly a tripel, and does not disappoint as an average for the style.

I purchased this beer from Beer Planet in Brussels in a 12 pack of assorted brews. I was excited to try this one after seeing that it had a pretty good rating. I kept it in the back room until I found the correct glass for it.

Before pouring the beer, I slowly turned the bottle upside down to mix in the contents that settled at the bottom. This beer poured nicely into a Abbaye de Leffe Trappist style glass with very little head. The color was a slightly milky, golden color. Towards the bottom of the glass were very small, dark particles from the bottom of the bottle and noticeable carbonation bubbles all around the glass.

I'm not an expert at detecting different smells in the beer but I could definitely smell the alcohol at 8.5%. The smell was pleasant and inviting.

The first sip of beer was pretty strong but delicious. This brew has very good mouthfeel and doesn't leave a bad aftertaste like some of the similar beers I have tried. It has a very nice carbonation feel to it and the taste of alcohol isn't very pronounced while drinking despite the ABV.

Other things I noticed while drinking were the lack of lacing on the glass and the relative ease of drinking. This beer was very good and is definitely one that I could drink quite often.

Bottle: traditional 330mL bottle, stylish label. I like it as a package; stylish.

Appearance: poured into a tulip glass. Pours a hazy amber-orange with plenty of fine carbonation across the profile. A one-finger fluffy white head hangs about for a time before settling to a creamy cap. Plenty of thick lacing. A fantastic-looking beer.

Aroma: mmm, that's a proper tripel right there. Toasted malts, honey, caramels, citrus and spices.

Taste: again the toasted malts with some wheat and clove, some bittering hops.

Aftertaste: the hop bitterness drops away pretty quickly, to be replaced by sweet malts. Very, very drinkable.

Mouth feel: a moderate body with just enough of that fine carbonation to carry plenty of flavour through. A good mouth feel.

Overall: I'm a big fan of tripels and a big fan of Leffe, so I had high hopes for this one. Thankfully and once again Abbaye de Leffe have once again delivered. A fantastic tripel - one of the best. Complex and easy drinking - I'll pay the extra bucks for this one.
