Dated: 10/05/11, 4902:01
From LCBO, 33cl

G: Chalice

A: Clear tinted orange-golden body with two fingers of white foamy head. Good retention and leaves thick lacing.

S: Banana, apple and funky yeast. Very weak aroma and hard to pick out.

T: Funky yeast is very prominent, some apple flavouring. Again very weak.

M: Medium-light bodied and medium-high carbonation. Creates a froathy texture and is very pleasant. Leaves a dry-stick funky finish.

D: Nothing about this beer is off putting, but that's where it ends. The price is not justified and it it a sad attempt at a belgian style.

330 ml, BBE 16. November 2011, into Leffe goblet. Pours clear golden, effervescent body overlain by gradually subsiding white head that fades to a persistent cloth. Nice lacing on the walls. A very simplistic aroma profile consisting of toasted malt reminiscent of sweet corn, conspicuous clove and light applish fruitiness . Taste is corn-like toasted malt, clove and restrained fruity tartness (apple/citrus). Some bitterness that seems to be phenolics derived and fails to balance out the dominant malty sweetness. Slightly alcoholic finish. Light to medium bodied and quite lively on the palate.

In short: liquefied sweet corn with clove staring in the face.

11.2 oz poured into Duvel tulip

A: clear pale orange with thin bubbly white head stays nicely on top; spotty lacing

S: light sweet malt, but an odd smell kept coming through that I can only oddly describe as reminiscent of cafeteria green beans! - strange.

T: stale bready malt. mild spice aftertates. light yeast presence.

M: thin, minimal carbonation. Light as it should be but borders on watery

D: smooth but not worth the time. A bit of an effort to finish this one just because the taste was so unusual. will easily look past this one from now on. Had to try it - bottle looked great.

pours beautifully. very carby. silky looking head. nice gold color.

grainy.but there is a note of the extra ABV to it. my initial impression was
that i might actually dump this one out. and thats rare.but ive decided to sit it out
anyways back to review.the nose is of corn. and grain. and maybe turnip? theres something odd in there.whatever it is , it spoils an otherwise unoffensive blonde for myself anyways.

starts off with a very evident higher abv. not pleasant. but a bit down the pint things lighten up. grains become more evident over the alcohol. still tho, theres something in the nose of this that i dont exactly enjoy. and that carries thru to the taste.
i doubt ill purchase it again. no hate towards the brewer , because they make a beautiful wiess. this is just not for my tastes at all.

almost adjunct like in its carb. smooth drinking. if you like the style.

*takes a second to sit back and quaff on it for a few*
its not overall terrible as I had thought, its just has too much ABV. if this were a normal 4 or 5% it might have better gravity and not taste so metallic and warm
i assume by the style that its an old recipe, so my bad review is probably just from lack of context, I didnt overall dislike this beer, just something about the is just not my thing. it does have upsides. the finish is grainey. and its smooth.
if you already like this and disagree.. enjoy it ..my dislike leaves more for you!

I was hoping for more here. Poured from a brown bottle into a pilsner glass (my tulip was dirty)

A - Beautiful Honey amber color with a healthy head that hangs on for a while.

S - There's something weird about this beer. I can't quite put a finger on it, but it almost smells medicinal. Phenols? other than that, sweet and yeasty. Clearly Belgian.

T - The same odd flavor in the nose comes through in the mouth, just stronger. It's kind of a chemically flavor, that i don;t think should be there. I love strong pale belgians, and i've noticed a similar flavor in others, but it's not offensive to me like it is in this one. Hmmm. Other than that, Sweet, yeasty, and fruity notes.

M - Medium soft mouthfeel.

D - This will be the last one of these I'll have. It wasn't terrible, but neither was "4 Christmases" and I won't be experiencing that again either.

Appearance: Good light amber color. Head stuck around nicely. The best part about the appearance was the carbonation which rose aggressively throughout.

Smell: I found the most powerful smell to be banana. I also picked up undertones of alcohol.

Taste: Extremely sweet. Bananas and fruit up front. Very breif, almost nonexistent, suggestion of hops. Finishes with over-ripe fruit.

Mouthfeel: Very thick.

Drinkability: I only bought a single, so I can't say for sure. However, I think that this beer is too sweet to drink more than one or two.

pale golden clor with a rich, thick buubly head, good head retention, leaving a legs on the side of the glass
S: peppery, spicy, cloves, earthy, belgian aroma, i am not trashing this beer, but it almost has a vomit like smell, i am not a fan of belgians, but this yeasty aroma is present in most belgian strains.
T: sweet, sugar- candy like taste, has a bitter after taste,
M: effervesent sparkle gives it a refreshing taste, light in body a

D: i can drink one of these and time to move on to something else, i get the feeling of a sugar rush if i had one too many of these, not my favorite style.

Appearance - White one finger head with low retention. Crystal honey gold body with a small amount of visible carbonation.

Smell - Very banana and wheat, like a hefeweizen. Something sweet like honey or ripened fruit.

Taste - A bit acidic and sour with a fishy and/or copper aftertaste That aftertaste renders this beer completely undrinkable.

Mouthfeel - The best part about the beer. Full and very carbonated.

Overall Drinkability - The only reason I'd ever have this beer again is just to make sure it wasn't a bad bottle. I suspect that's not the case though. Best before end 26/05/12. Numbers below that are 4922:22.

From a 12 oz.

Pours a clear brass-gold color with a moderate head that doesn't hang around too long, although a bit of lacing is everpresent.

Smells estery and a bit like bananas that are overripe. There's a weird kind of burned element to it, but not smokey.

The taste is also like bananas and stale bread.

Mouthfeel is full and fizzy.

What a disappointment. I saw "Belgian Abbey Ale" and thought that surely it had to be a little good. Not terrible but not worth having really either. Just kind of blah.

Pours a crystal yellow color with a frothy white two finger head. There is some lacing to be seen. The aroma is of clove, spice, and a slight fruit smell. The taste is of a sweet malt. There is also a taste of banana faintly and some clove. The mouthfeel is a little stingy and moderately carbonated. Overall you could have more than one but nothing to make you want to have a sixer.

Pours a crystal clear brass with active carbonation and a moderate sized, fluffy head. Smells of pale, toasty malts, a good heaping of grain, subdued spicy Belgian yeast, and a wort-like smell creeps in. Taste is very worty, with a bit of a bread taste and some esters in there somewhere. Finishes cloyingly sweet with, what do you know, a saccharine flavor (just like the last 4 or so beers I've had in the last couple of days). Boring, and just plain gross. Mouthfeel is too fulsome for me here and the carbonation does nothing to liven this up. I'm having a hard time completing this.

Not bad, having one in a hotel room in Paris right now. America surpassed Europe in making quality beers about 10 years ago so can't wait to get home.

whopping head with massive fizzy big carbonation and a perfectly clear view right through the body. Thats where I have a problem is the ultra clear super filtered appearance and it truly translated into a beer without character. candy like smell and the usual belgian yeast coming through. I had many beers this day and this was the worst of the bunch...I had this beer second before the next three which were all grand cru's so this is not a victim of circumstance. Not one of my favorite belgian pale ale's to put it nicely and I would recommend you skip this pup.

12oz bottle. Pours a perfect copper color and makes a thin white head, leaves a nice bit of lacing on my glass. Strong bread yeasty aroma. Peppery spices, clove and sweet banana are dominant in the flavor, however there's a bit of metallic in the background that is not so pleasant and perhaps a bit plastic. Nice medium palate that finishes dry with crisp bubbly carbonation. Halfway through this and the metallic flavor has seemingly diminished quite a bit, though the plastic remains. While this brew has a couple of strong points, the weak points are dominating here, I don't think I'll be drinking this one again for a while. One thing I noticed here is that this brew isn't bottle conditioned, which seems to be pretty standard for the style. Perhaps Leffe's commercial nature will inspire some macro drinkers to crossover into the craftbrew world, but I can't say that I recommend this. A decent gateway beer at best.

A: Pours a very attractive rich golden yellow. Nice little frothy head with better than expected lacing.

S: Intense not-so subtle bubblegum and bananas. Strong yeast scent, sweet tarts.

T: Unfortunately, the same qualities from the scent translate to the palette in a not so appealing manner. This beer is super harsh for the style, over the top almost saccharine sweetness , tastes almost like diet soda or sugar free bubble gum. Yuck, I remembered enjoying this in the past, but this is in drainpour territory because it just doesn't taste pleasant. Harsh, over the top and not gentle in any manner.

M: Strong carbonation, but that diet soda taste cannot be avoided.

O: The harsh over the top sweet taste just drags this down. It is unpleasant to drink, I will not be purchasing this again. Yuck...Drainpour time

poured very hazy out of the small bottle. smelled like wet lemony grassy herbs, with the smell like it was i thought it would be a pretty tasty beer...it wasn't.

the taste was very pungent, almost musky taste with some lemon.

carbination was good, it was very smooth on the tongue.

I would drink it again if it was free, or the only thing available, but I would definantly not search this one out. Expected better.

12oz bottle into a big tulip glass, consumed before the best by date.

Leffe, a bold golden/blonde ale that shines, really, im looking at it and it's shining. No other colors here, just 1st place gold. A big white rush of foam on the top part of the glass leaving window covering lace with legs.

Smells include sweet malt and a bit of corn, I swear to god. A bit of hay and some wheat. Nothing in terms of detectable hops. Kind of boring, but this is a simple style.

Malts are in the forefront and run the show. They give off a bisquit/bread thing and also I kind of detect a malt liquor type taste as well. Leffe is not quite that bad, but it certainly ain't great. I think some belgian yeast could of spiced this up, there is just nothing going for it.

The feel is smooth and lush but the flavor just aint there. The carbonation was light and maybe a boost would of made some sparks in feel, otherwise this was flat as a pancake, but not completly dead. Medium bodied. I'm not a fan of this beer, I found out when I noticed the small sips I was taking, I usually down Belgian pales, but not this one. I dumped the rest out.

This is a world famous beer, but I was not impressed with this at all. It is way too sweet, especially with food. The color is yellowish copper, and the smell is not so great. I don't taste much hops in this beer, very malty. I definitely won't be trying this beer again.

12 oz. bottle into Duvel tulip @ 40°F.

$10.99 / 6 pk.

S: Too sweet. Overwhelms almost everything. Not a bad smell, just too sweet for beer this particular style.

A: Small loose white head that quickly dissipates and does not cover. Low lacing, with no ring. Clear amber body.

T: Sweet, sweet, sweet. Not much else.

M: Medium to high carbonation. Bites the tongue. Low to medium body.

D: Not horrible, but I wouldn't spend the night on this. Just a little too harsh to sustain the sweetness. Drink a six pack of Sprite?

O: Not my favorite, but better than Miller Lite!

Huge foamy white head no matter how slow you pour. Smell is equal maltiness and hops, like it's flavor. Well balanced taste with plenty of both hops and malt. It is a bit heavy but is has a very dry finish which makes it so drinkable. Im disappointed that you only get 11.2 ounces. An empty bottle of the stuff ways more than a traditional empty beer bottle. I know small batch euro beers often come in thicker bottles but since InBev owns them, I'm now assuming that .8 ounces of beer costs more than .8 ounces of glass. I'll probably never drink it again.

Poured from a 11.2 oz bottle into an oversized wine glass. Reviewed live.

A- Fluffy finger width white head. Decent carbonation. Two minute long retention. Light amber color with brilliant clarity.

S- Wheaty, and some banana like a hefeweizen. Has a lot of weizen attributes in the nose and some sugariness as well.

T- Bready and wheaty, with definite weizen attributes. Kind of dull and metallic flavored on the end.

M- Very carbonated with a lighter body and a filmy linger.

O- Below average.

Crystal clear, golden, nice lacing on the glass with a decent head formed after the pour. Smell is of grains, lemons, and tobacco, slightly sweet as well with a hint of yeastiness. Tastes much like it smells...begins with a malty sweetness, slightly bready with a bit of spiciness. As the taste develops, a light citrus flavor makes its way onto the palate, followed by a dry, unwelcomed musty tobacco taste. There is that traditional belgian yeastiness in the flavor, but it becomes muffled out by the aftertaste of this beer. Mouthfeel is light, perhaps a bit watery, carbonation is on the high end. An easy drinker, but one that I will not likely purchase again.

This beer is beloved by many. Count me out!

G – Unibroue tulip

A – Quite a brassy golden hue, translucent, with a soapy, wispy white head and a bit of lace.

S – It is mostly a pale Euro aroma that I discern, but there is also a plastic-y cinnamon-ish element that I do not care for.

T – It has a chemical banana flavor and a strong peppery finish, other than that it tastes fairly nondescript. I am not a huge fan.

M – It has a decent feel; well-carbonated, etc. Moot to me, as I don’t care for the taste.

D – As I intimated, this is one of my least favorite Belgian beers.

Huge creamy white head.
Cream of corn aroma, with sweetness and clovey spice.
More corn on the palate, a smattering of citrus, but the sweetness makes this a desert beverage. Only the faintest muffled bitterness. This is like corn soda.
Could not tell there was much alcohol in this beer, being masked with the sugar and corn.

Serve with corn on the cob, or actually, why bother serving?

No comments on this one really, other than it seems to be widespread and quite popular - an easily attainable gateway into the world of Belgian beers.

Look - A rich golden colour with a pillowy white head that sticks around for quite some time.

Smell - Sweet, lots of banana and cloves.

Taste - Very sweet with tons of banana...almost too sweet for me. Some malt, cloves, but much is overshadowed by the sweetness.

Feel - A bit lighter than other similar Belgian beers, but overall a pleasant mouthfeel.

Overall, not a bad beer by any means, but I prefer Duvel's slightly sour maltiness to the sweetness of this one.
