the label of this bottle says 'rituel 9', poured chilled from the bottle in a tulip.

The color is dark amber, clear with 3 fingers of white cap with very fine bead and thick webbing of lace sticks. The smell has lots of sweetness perhaps malt with a noticeable candy-like smell with a slightly cheesy yeast nose and mild floral accent with light alcohol aroma. The feel has malt sweetness with woody texture and chewy texture with spice and creamy body with sweet throughout almost a cloying effect w/ alcohol drying finish.

The taste has a mineral quality with a light caramel and spice accent w/ warming of alcohol in the taste and sweet candy sugar type flavor and mild toasted sweet malt but flavor is not as full as the smell lets on. The taste of sweet malt continues after the swallow as residual sugar flavor. This is barely a good belgian at this point...only 4 months old but it has started to decline. I would say this is decent but would not buy it unless it is fresh.

250 ml bottle purchased in Paris as part of a six pack for under 1 euro per bottle. Served fairly cool into a wine glass.

Appearance - rich dark golden color with some coppery hues. A finger of thick dense head is poured and has excellent retention time before eventually dissolving into a soapy conglomeration on top of the beer. Clear and a few bubbles are apparent.

Smell - huge Belgian yeast aroma that absolutely dominates, after that there's a peppery and woodsy aroma that comes through.

Taste - sweet and boozy, with a sugariness that just keeps building and building and is overkill. So etching akin to super sweet candied molasses is also present in there as well as a generous helping of the funky Belgian yeast. It tasty but more of an papery if since the sweetness is crazy high on this one.

Mouthfeel - well carbonated, but the carbonation can't cut through what becomes a sweet and sugary conglomeration. At the end of the day, I feel like I will need a chisel of a toothbrush to get rid of the the accumulation of sugar on my teeth.

Overall - a great looking, but super sweet strong Belgian pale ale, it's a good beer but should only be consumed in small quantities since the sugariness is overbearing at times.

A: Golden amber. Medium-high effervescence. No floaties. One inche of thick white foam.

S: Boozy, Rich and intense aromatics of prune and dried fruits. Some fresh orange aromatics show through the backend as well.

T: Medium - high intensity. Follows on the nose. No hop flavour.

P: Bitterness low. Medium to full bodied. Low carbonation. Sweet finish.

O: Polished, sophisticated and of enough complexity even if it's not a very bold take on the style.
