A nice looking beer but it lacks any foam or lacing. It smells nice with a sweet smell, presumably from the currants. The taste is very bitter with an underlying sweetness. It would have been better to not have so many hops so that the sweetness could come through better. It does explode in the mouth but it is not a beer that I would have again nor recommend.

Deep blood orange pour; looks promising. Smell is faint. Taste is flat. Very average impact. Hard to believe this weighs in at 6.7%. Novelty, seasonal gift for someone with an appreciation for the Mean One, but not something I'd repeat nor recommend.

Another seasonal from Yukon entitled "39 1/2 Foot Pole Black Currant India Pale Ale"
Appearance - Pours an amber with a finger of bubbly white head.
Smell - black currants, bready caramalts, hint of leafy hops.
Taste - Hit right away with ripe black currants followed by the bready caramlts and the leafy hops.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes with a sweetness from the black currants and a light bitterness from the leafy hops.
Overall - An interesting concept by using black currants in the IPA style (if that is what this beer is trying to be). The black currant flavour is well showcased in this brew. The hops could of been a tad more pronounced but still an enjoyable brew.

What a great surprise in my Advent Beer Calendar! I was expecting to dislike this beer but in the end it was my favourite in the whole calendar.

341ml bottle, day 4 of the 2013 Craft Beer Advent Calendar. Nice reference in the name and on the label to 'You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch', from one of the few holiday tropes that I don't mind seeing dragged out each and every year. Oh, the beer - it's a Black Currant Ale, apparently.
This beer pours a clear, pale purple-tinted medium golden amber hue, with two fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and slightly creamy off-white head, which leaves some decent avalanche face lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.
It smells of semi-sweet, fruity, and sort of wine-like black currants, bready caramel malt, mild orange and lemon citrus notes, and further musty, leafy hops. The taste is more dark currant and grape juice fruitiness, soft crackery caramel malt, a twinge of citrus, a subtle metallic booziness, and weirdly bitter floral, somewhat soapy hops.
The carbonation is light, but peppy enough to carry on through the fruitiness, the body a sturdy enough medium weight, more than a tad clammy, and not particularly smooth. It finishes off-dry, the malt and waning pithy black fruit still not given free rein by the vegetal bitterness of the hops.
A nice idea - but what black currants have to do with the Grinch (maybe he was a fan of mince pies?), I don't really know. The follow-through is a bit wanting, however, the fruit a bit, well, old seeming, yet the bitterness of the hops, while not my preferred kind, persists. Might be good to give this another go with a fresher sample next time.
