I think this beer is intended to be a common-ground between macro- and micro- styles of beer in that it has some flavour and body, but isn't overwhelming to the average Joe. There is a lot of toasted malt up front and some hop bitterness on the backend. Not much carbonation. I think this is a solid example of a mass-appeal amber that still can please the odd beer snob who finds his way into the Yukon.

Yukon Red pours a deep, bright red amber with a thin head that fades quickly. The aroma is malty, with some nutty toffee and caramel and just a hint of earthy hops. The nutty malt dominates the flavor with a nice sweetness that isn't cloying. The bitterness is mild and there is a bit of fruitiness in the finish.

Beer is reddish brown with a small off-white head that leaves quickly. Minimal lacing.

Smell consists of slightly toasted caramel malt, along with some grassy hops. A nice scent.

Taste is similar to the nose. Caramel malt, grassy hops. A slightly toasted taste. Balanced with a slight bitterness. Simple but good.

Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Bready.

Overall, quite good. Not exciting or unusual, but very solid.

Thanks to wordemupg for this.

Poured from a 341ml. bottle.

Appearance: A nice amber/red/brown body, murky in a good way with a sizable head (not too big) and average lacing.

Smell: Spicy malt, caramel, small dose of hops and a touch of candy sweetness.

Taste: Strong nuttiness at first and some candy cane in the finish. Malt is all over this one and hops stay in the shadow, but that's fine. The finish has a small herb spiciness.

Mouthfeel: Real smooth, comfy and medium-low carbonation.

Overall: A real good ale and a pleasure to drink. Try this!

341ml bottle poured into a 16oz pint glass.

A - Nice frothy head of light tan foam off the pour. The color is a deep ruby-red with a touch of rusty amber to it.Not really any head retention or lacing.

S - Mostly malt upfront, with lots of caramel malt and toffee leading the way and some bready malt and nuttiness in there too. Light roasty character rounds it out. Sweet with a touch of spice, overall; although I do detect an undeniable trace of skunkiness in here.

T - Really malt forward flavor profile, with caramel malt, nuts, toffee and barley are all prominent. Finishes with a subtle roastiness that adds just a hint of bitterness to the finish. Some earthy hops also help in that regard. Finishes with some cinnamon and nutmeg, giving it a gentle kick of spice to go along with the sweet malt flavors. After it warms I also begin to get some cocoa powder and vanilla. While this is all around pretty solid for an amber ale, I still taste a sort of peculiar skunked flavor in here, which I'm rather disappointed about. According to FreshBeerOnly, I believe the production date reads as January 9th, so it's not exactly fresh at three and a half months old, but Yukon claim an 8 month shelf life on their products, so...

M - Fits the flavor profile very nicely. Medium bodied with the carbonation on the lower side of things. Light spiciness adds as well. No complaints here.

D - All around solid amber ale, and sort of reminds me of GIB's Lions Winter Ale. While it was good, it didn't quite live up to the hype for me, but I can certainly see myself revisiting this one. Enjoyable introduction to Yukon's brews for sure.

from notes a few months ago...
A - Clear bubbly cedar, short head didn't last
S - Nutty and toffee aromas up front, light earthiness with some citrus
T - roasted nuts and toffee malt, peppery and earthy hops with subtle hints of cedar on the finish
M - Medium to light body and carbonation, full finish with a hint of bitter, very smooth
O - all around a very solid sessionable brew, I can see why this was 2009 Canadian beer of the year as the label proclaims
