The second batch, apparently, of Yukon's draft-only Imperial India Pale Ale, usually sold out before it can even be considered exportable to the southern provinces. So, thanks are in order to the nascent Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous, uh, Club, who procured a keg of this for their inaugural meeting at Wunderbar. Lucky me, I happened into the pub an hour early, and convinced the bartender (without any serious arm-twisting) to pour me a pint (only $4?!!!!) before the throngs started arriving...
This beer appears a fairly clear, medium bright gold colour, with two fingers of creamy whipped marshmallow head, which lazes about like a cat in the sun for a spell, eventually giving up some blobby lace around the glass. It smells of biscuity, bread dough malt, some mild orange cream, and bitter pine and grapefruit rind hops. The taste is more bready malt, with a minor in caramel, and a continuing citrus pith and pine forest floor hop bitterness. I got a slight twinge of warming alcohol, as things moved along. The carbonation is quite soft, the body middleweight, smooth, and almost silky, echoing silly thoughts of a life spent in cask. It finishes in kind, a steady battle of attrition between the stalwart bready malt, and uppity, edgy pine-dominated hops.
A hell of a drinkable DIPA, at a hair under 10 points of booze, you just wouldn't know it from quaffing this well put-out monster. Balanced, as they say, and just enough zing to keep you coming back until that's no longer an option. Sigh. Until next time.
