An amber beer that is well balanced, but with lots of hoppy flavors.

One thing I've noticed looking through the reviews, this beer seems to be VERY inconsistent from batch to batch. My experience was almost nothing like any of the previous reviewers' and their experiences seem to have been fairly different as well. If you happened to have read my beerfly review of Jaipur, just tack this on to my complaint that the brewery aspect seemed to be more of an afterthought to the restaurant.

Anyways, the beer was served in a Jaipur shaker pint. Kind of a peachy color. So hazy that it was pretty much opaque, though to be fair, it was quite dim inside the restaurant (but the beer was very under-attenuated, so the opaque haze would make sense). Had a nice inch of head with good retention and excellent lacing.

The aroma was surprisingly great. Unlike previous reviews, I got a VERY assertive herbal, pine resin, and floral notes from the hops. Kind of one dimensional with the hops, on the other hand, but that's the case with the many IPAs.

The taste was good, for what it's worth, but as I mentioned, it was very under-attenuated. The flavor profile was quite good, but it was a thick, syrupy sweet mess. Seemed to be quite obviously made from malt extract, but that's not necessarily a bad thing to me (I've had plenty of extract batches from myself and others that turned out great). The hops were a highlight, and the malt would have worked well with it had it finished fermenting.

The mouthfeel was kind of gross, as you would expect from a half-fermented beer. Very thick with a syrupy viscosity. Creamy with very little carbonation. There was a lingering grassy bitterness too.

I think I would have liked this beer had it spent another 2-3 weeks in the tank, but serving a beer in this state is just plain unacceptable. It's hard to say whether or not I'll give it another chance in the future.

Draught @ Jaipur: This one pours a hazy, darker orangish color. There was absolutely no head on it, even though there is carbonation in the glass. The aroma is extremely mild for an IPA. It has earthy notes as well as a hint of pine. The taste is only slightly bitter, even a bit weak by Pale Ale standards. Earthy notes, a hint of caramel, unbalanced. In all fairness, a really good IPA probably wouldn't pair well with the Indian food in the restaurant, which was excellent.

Dark coppery-bronze, served with a smallish, wispy, off-white head. Excellent retention though, rings of lace were produced. Soft nose, lightly hoppy with caramel hints. Inviting but subtle. The malt is more pronounced on the plate upfront with the hoppiness at the end. Mild bitterness… light hoppy aftertaste. Simplistic… kind of dull... not a lot going on (no citrus or pine, little caramel) Medium body. Modest carbonation. This is a decent IPA, not “Americanized,” drinkable. Nothing worth seeking out.

Update: I tried this IPA again, I took no notes but I did lower the scores greatly. This is a very, very average IPA. It really lacks in bitterness and the malt is not flavorful enough for me to consider this truly English.

Had on tap while enjoying tons of food... The food was great. I wish the beer was as well.

Looked like a good IPA. Dark copper, clarity was very nice. Excellent bright, white head that lasted throughout.

Aroma was near non-existent. Some traces of hops and citrus... not a good sign.

Taste was hoppier than the aroma... some nice citrus notes and decent bitterness but overall, not a good IPA.

Will go back for the food.

On tap at the Oven Indian restaurant in Lincoln, NE. Arrived copper with absolutely no head. Smelled meekly of pine and grass. The taste was very disappointing: weak astringent piney hops and no malt balance at all. Metallic finish with a distinctly sour aftertaste. Not a good beer, but I guess it's better than BMC. If you have the choice at The Oven or Jaipur, and want an IPA, ask if they have any Samuel Smith's India Ale. Pass on this one.
