Poured into a snifter, I really had to swirl and pour high to get any head. I squeezed an inch of tan froth out before it disappeared.

Dark roast, rice, and some soft sugary tones are what I gathered from the smell right off the bat. More subtle sweet ripened fruit tones surfaced as it warmed.

The flavor has a bit more to offer. Sweet and tangy bitterness balance each other well. Brown sugar, dark chocolate and a coffee finish.

The body wasn't too heavy, given it's still a lager it was quite easy to drink. The carbonation was sharp and left a nice tingle in the mouth after the brew was a memory.

Thanks to coldmeat23 for hooking it up.
Poured into a pint glass.

A: Pours a DEEP brown with dark ruby highlights around the edges. About a half finger of foam fades quickly leaving almost nothing on top and no lacing. Kinda looks like a Coke or Root Beer.

S: All I can smell is chocolate. Wow.

T: Big chocolate up front, followed by lots of roasted barley and a little bit of earthy hops.

M: Very chewy for a low abv beer. Also quite smooth considering the relatively high carbonation. Cleanses the palate nicely while leaving a just right feel on the tongue.

D: A very nice, mildly sessionable beer. Would go great with certain food/dessert pairings. One of the more enjoyable lagers I've had. Mmm

pours very dark, some light is visible through the glass revealing some sediment, and a burnt caramel color. poured a loud, fizzy off white head that dissipated quickly, very little lacing.

some roasted malts in the smell, a faint smell of coffee with a touch of molasses

Not too complex on the taste, some burnt bitter as others have mentioned, next to no sweetness. it tastes like it's missing something, i expected something maltier.

light-medium bodied, moderate carbonation, and quite smooth.

The beer is pretty sessionable, drinks easy.

A - Dark chocolate with a tan head that disappears quickly.

S - Smokey, toasted almost burnt malts.

T - Bitter chocolate taste.

M - Smooth with medium body.

d - Tastes alright, but I wish you could taste some of the sweet in the malts rather than all burnt bitter.

From notes. Had on 3/6/10 at a local DC tasting. Thanks to nimbleprop for sharing this beer.

a - Pours a dark brown color with a little beige head and little carbonation.

s - Smells a little bit smokey. Also smells of chocolate and roasted malts.

t - Strong chocolate syrup taste to it. Also tastes of some sweeter and roasted malts, but again, it is a bit smokey.

m - I thought it was very smooth and creamy and very easy to drink. Medium body and moderate carbonation.

d - I kind of liked this black lager. I enjoyed the smokey chocolate taste it had, but wish I could have tasted the sweet malts a little more. I wouldn't go out of my way to find this again, but if I saw it I might give it another try.

Pours very dark brown with cola highlights. Head is initially thick and full, slowly reducing to a thin sheen.

Aroma is smokey peat and dark grain, and a bit of a cooked meat.

Taste is similar to the nose. Overall mild in flavor. Smoke overshadows the malty sweetness. Some charred grain bitterness in the finish brings balance.

Mouthfeel is light.

Overall a decent offering. Much more mild in character than expected, but there were no off flavors.

Poured a nice dark brown with a light creamy tan had lingering and leaving some light lacing.

The smell had a nice bit of light smoke and a touch of sweet cereal.

The flavor follows the smell perfectly the light smokeyness coming through up front with a long creamy sweetness in the finish.

The mouthfeel is very creamy with a long slightly dry finish.

Very drinkable and top notch Swarz.

(12 oz. bottle into mug) Poured a rich black color with a creamy tan head that left little to no lacing on the glass. Nose was heavy with a toasted chocolate and caramel, with a hint of coffee. Drink was surprisingly smooth, and unlike other schwarzbiers I have tried, the roast was not overpowering, but well proportioned with the other flavors. As the glass warmed a little, this smoky flavor faded, and the chocolate malt took the fore. A very very refreshing drink after my meal. The perfect pick me up on a snowy day!

A-color is pitch black. head is slightly tan but not very big.

S-first sniff is fantastic! cream, roasted coffee, toffee, dark chocolate, cherries?, nutty. and if you take a step back and just try to appreciate the combination of that all, it's very nice.

T-doesn't quite live up to the aroma, but still delicious. the toffee, chocolate, and cream stand out the most.

M-a little thinner than i expected/hoped for, but good.

very tasty. i could have a couple of these back to back. this one went down quickly

Great. First beer I ever tried from Krebs, but sets a high standard. Looks nice, smells great, tastes better. I think the average reviews for this are too low.

Dark malty goodness that tastes sort of chocolaty and doesn't lose it's flavor as your glass slowly warms. Not too complex or trying to mix too many flavors in there. The stout-like flavors aren't too strong and let it still taste like a beer and not like a chocolate bar or a cup of coffee. Just a simple, smooth, easy to drink beer.

Buy this beer. For sure.

Pours just like I like it, dark and cloudy. Looks like dark cola, with no head.

Good smell...chocolate dominates with notes of licorice in the background.

Chocolate and coffee, both bittersweet, flood the tastebuds.

Initially sweet, then slightly bitter, the feel in the mouth is complex with the differing sensations, before giving way to a smooth finish.

A nice beer that goes down smooth begging you for another taste.

A - Poured dark, nearly opaque, with a nice creamy head. There were dark ruby tones around the edges and head fell to a covering after a few minutes.

S - Aroma dominated by roasted and chocolate malts and that is about it.

T - Like the aroma lots of roasted and chocolate malts. Very much like a porter but quite clean tasting. Was pleased with the balance, the roasted and chocolate malt has with the base. Not overpowering and lends a good flavor without trying to knock you over with it.

M - Dry and smooth, feels fairly attenuated and not heavy.

D - Nice flavors, not overpowering, not a lot of hop bitterness or flavor...nothing over the top. All this makes the beer very drinkable.

Got this one in a BotM shipment.

Poured into a shaker: a near black brown, 2 fingers dropping to half-a-finger of creamy tan head. Stout-like in appearance, with a wall of lacing.

Smells of roasty-toasty biscuit, sweet caramelized malt, creamy coffee but all with a moderate intensity, not real rich. Nutty & kind of peppery, slight sour milk. Popping popcorn?

Taste of bitter chocolate, coffee-like roast grains. Then there's a good hop bite, enough to end very crisp after those heavier flavors. Dark bread crust. Very full-flavored for a nearly session-strength brew. Mild roast & sugar in aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is a nice combo of prickly bite & creamy foam, medium body. I have a feeling I'm going to buck the overall trend in the ratings -- I was pretty impressed by this low-ish ABV lager, flavorful without weighing too heavilyon the palate. I would've mistake this for a porter if I didn't know better.

A: Dark mahogany color; chery on the lit edges. Poured < half inch tan head. decanted continually. Thin sheets of lace slid down the glass.

S: Roasted grain, a slight chocolate but mixed with a tart-smelling citrus. More of an earthy, mineral-like ground cocoa with some warming, hints of brown sugar.

T: Bitter chocolate. Lightly sweet cocoa, a heavy roasted (almost burnt) coffee acridness and a twist of lemon. Caramel sweetness in the finish. Not as well blended as a typical lager.

M: Medium body. Ample carbonation. Very active in the mouth makes it feel lighter.

D: Easy to drink and pretty flavorful in the nose and mouth.

I got this as part of a BOTMC. I poured into a standard pint glass, pitch black with a slight white head. The nose was slight, perhaps roasted malt. The flavor was sweet with roasted malt. The finish lingers with a mild bitterness. This is light in body and easy drinking. Even though this is not my favorite style I enjoyed this.

Thanks calsbeek for this bottle which was included as an extra in a recent trade.

A: The pour from bottle to pint glass is black with about one finger of tan colored foam.

S: The aroma is almost solely roasted malt with perhaps a touch of earthy hops.

T: Like the nose, the primary player in the flavor is the roasted malt. There is a slight acidity to the beer which lends it an almost sour flavor. A slight bitter and smokiness is present also, but at times is overwhelmed by the acidity.

M: The body is quite good, especially for what most people generally expect from a lager. The carbonation is very lively.

D: Definitely an easy drinker in terms of alcohol "punch", but the acidity/sourness detracts somewhat from the drinkability.

Served on-tap in a standard 16oz pint glass.

Dark brown with plenty of tan head.

Aroma doesn't stand out much with just a hint of roast and a bit of spicy hops.

Taste delivers much more than the nose with a coffee/cocoa roast character that falls just short of what's found in a standard American porter. Not much else in the way of malt flavors, but a fair amount of spicy, noble hoppiness rounds out the roast.

Medium bodied and carbonation is spot on. Overall, a solid Schwarzbier with a little bit more roast than traditional German examples and enough hops to balance it all out.

A: Pours a very nice blackish brown with a dark tan head. Lots of active carbonation. Head is 2ish fingers. But that fades pretty quick to much less than a finger. But the beer is still a very nice black with just hints of brown around the edge.

S: Quite sweet malt actually, not as much roast as I expected. No smoke or burnt qualities at all.

T: Again, not much schwaz going on here. No roasted character at all. And in fact some off tastes as well. Hmm. Maybe some smoke in the aftertaste of a few sips. There's some sort of odd bitter tart thing going on here though. Yuck? I'm leaning ever more toward drainpour.

M: Light and nice, like a Schwarzbier should be.

D: flavor kills it.

Thanks to springdogg for this interesting extra, poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

This is a nice looking beer, it pours black with some slight ruby glow around the edges. The head is light tan, thick at first but fades to nothing quickly with no lacing.

The smell is all roasted malt, coffee and bitter chocolate.

The taste is... acidic? The bitter coffee and roasted malt hit the tongue first, but they are followed, and overpowered, by a burnt coffee acidity that is bordering on unpleasant. There is a nice splash of wheat and chocolate at the end of the taste that saves it, and the taste is interesting enough to want more.

The beer is well carbonated and has a nice body and crisp finish. The low alcohol combined with the coffee flavor is a nice combination.

12oz screwtop bottle received in trade poured into a Portsmouth goblet. No freshness date found on the bottle.

A - Pours a thin, translucent almost perfectly black beer. No head whatsoever, only the faintest of collars around the edge of the glass. Does show signs of carbonation.

S - Dark, burnt malts, black patent for sure. Cold black coffee in look and aroma. Getting no hop aroma at all, and no sweetness from the malt either. As it warms a sour acetic acid smell starts to rise up.

T - Bitter and sour at the same time. Not sure about this one - might be a bad bottle (low carbonation and sourness makes me wonder). Burnt, dark roasted Starbucks-like coffee flavor, but this is masked heavily by the sourness on top. No hops detected.

M - Light, thinnish body. Carbonation is present, but minimal. Sourness pervades the mouth leaving a dry, parched feeling.

D - Really thinking this is a bad bottle. Drinkability is minimal in this state...hope this is a bad bottle. Would like to try this one again to give it a fair chance. I have never had this one before, so have no reference point for whether it is "supposed" to be like this or not.

If I get another chance, I would like to review this one again.

I have had this a couple times. First time was good the 2nd not so much but I think Choc had a problem a while back since most of the brews I had from them had some very bad off flavors. This time I found the Miner Mishap to be quite nice.

Pours a nice dark deep bronw/black. Smallish tan head.

Nose had some burnt oders to it due to the dark malts.

Intial taste is clean with slight roasted flavor, finishes sweet. Mouth feel is very smooth.

Drinkablilty is excellant. Could be a nice session type brew.

A: Pours a dark brown with some ruby highlights around the edges. A two finger beige head forms and gently recedes to a ring. Some patchy lace is left behind.
S: Malty with some caramel and chocolate. Kind of musky and dank with a metallic twang.
T: The metallic character pretty much goes away after the beer breaths and warms up a little. Caramel and chocolate malt. More malty dark fruit flavors keep coming out as this warms up. Very enjoyable and subtle.
M/D: A medium body, but over carbonated. Easy and smooth to drink though.

This is a great beer. Choc continues to impress me with drinkable and subtle beers like this one.

Pours a black tinted mahogany with a thin tan head. Nose has roasty malts, chocolate, light hops and tart fruits. Taste has a strange blend of sour rotting fruit, sweet caramel and black malt. Terrible balance, hard to finish the bottle. Had to kind of chug this one. The sourness really ruins the beer. Thin body a bit syrupy. Definately unique, but nothing close to even a moderate example of the style.
