Tasted On: 06-11-2012
Freshness: Not indicated
Packaging: 22 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Tulip
Purchased: Received in a trade

A: Hazy orange color, topped by an off-white head of 3 fingers. The head fades quickly, leaving just a fair amount of lacing.

S: Very spicy aromas, with Belgian yeast characteristics, plus a malty, caramel sweetness, alcohol, and fruitiness. In many ways the aromas remind me of a barleywine.

T: The taste features a citrus tartness, with spicy hop bittering and a bit of alcohol warmth. What's surprising is I get none of the malty sweet flavors I expected based on the aroma. To me, this is one of those beers that smelled better than it tasted.

M: Very prickly feel from the high carbonation levels combined with the citrus flavors. Medium bodied, the finish is dry, zesty, and somewhat bitter.

O: A good farmhouse ale, but the wonderful aromas led to a letdown in the taste.

Thanks to TheBishopco for this one!

B+

22oz into a tulip. Pours a hazy honey orange, off white head retains nicely, nice lacing.

Aroma is surprising off putting as if glazed with oxidation, traditional saison sits below. I appreciated it more as the glass was emptied but the initial impression was not favorable.

Taste is grassy but not musty, lightly fruity, tiny citrus. More bitter than dry in the finish. Medium bodied creamy mouthfeel. No sharp notes, competent.
cheers

12oz->Hennepin Chalice

A ~ Pours dirty blonde/tangerine w/ red hue. Tiny bubbles of Carbonation typical of the style. Light lacing, with poor retention.

S ~ Aromas of white bread, orange & a hint of medicine. Smelled more Phenolic after warming.

T ~ Breadyness follows throughout, as well as flavors reminiscent of fruit compote (lemon juice, sugar, raspberry & apples). Bit of OJ & melon... Fresh cut wheat, white pepper (very mild) with a splash of yeast & booze on the finish.

M ~ Very aggressive carbonation... Gaseous! Semi-dry finish.

D ~ Overall I'd say this is an average Saison with good drinkability, but it is as carbonated as a bottle of Mountain Dew, it's nuts. This turned down the drinkability for me. A good attempt, just needs major tweaking.

cheers.

Hazy, slightly darker orange color, light white head of a couple of fingers, sparse lacing. Spicy, earthy nose, with a zesty, predominant citrus backing. Tastes slightly sweet, fairly spicy/zesty/peppery, plenty of earthy notes, and some noticeable hoppiness. Crisp and lighter in body, clean finish. Easy drinking, but not one of the better Saison's I've had.

A solid American-brewed saison ale that favors a creamier, more hearty body, and malt flavor/feel than more authentic Belgian varieties. But does this make it 'Super'?

Glowing and hazy, the golden ale builds a dense blanket of foam that coats the beer with a solid white hue. Superb retention and lace makes for an impressive appearance.

Fruity with aromas of peach, pear, appricot, apple, and a little lemony acidity that tickles the nose. Cracker-like maltiness illudes to a crisp bread flavor that's light but forms the structure for aromas. Herbal and floral with an earthy spice of lemongrass, hay, and honey suckle. Phenolic spice takes the shape of white pepper, orange zest, coriander, and a hint of plastic.

Rich flavors of the fruity esters described in the nose along with those poinant spicy phenols give a fair depth of complexity that feed off each other and bounce off of the malt sweetness. Partly grainy, partly caramel-sweet, the base flavors are rich and biscuity in comparisons to Belgian varieties. Herbal and floral early aromas and taste turn lightly bitter in finish for a clean and snappy finish.

Medium bodied and creamy throughout, the beer seems heavy for the style because of the firm malt character and the struggle for full dryness late.

Though delicious for beer's sake, this saison is very malty rich and never allows for the expressive carbonation or evaporative dryness that more authentic Belgian saisons exhibit. In comparison, this version seems very English ale-like because of the heavy fruit esters and moderate attenuation. It could also use more character from more expressive Belgian yeast blends; this one's low on earthy must, zesty hops, and vinous acidity that make those Belgian saisons so seductive. Still, we're talking about separating the world class examples from simply good ones- such as this.

Thanks BlueOkie!

22oz bottle, received from Wrigley1 as part of a Poker BIF shipment. This poured a dark golden color, very hazy (lots of sediment that I wasn't too careful with), maybe 2 fingers of foam. Nice aroma, herbal and spicy, maybe some light pear and apple. It tastes grassy, more from hops than spices I'd guess, with a bitter aftertaste that brings some Belgian Saisons to mind. Maybe a little yeasty. A little lower carb than usual, if there is a usual for the style, but it works wonderfully. Excellent Saison. From Oklahoma!

Thanks to Freddy at BierGarten in Tulsa for pointing out Choc Signature Series Super Saison.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a New Belgium globe, this Saison is golden and hazed with two-plus fingers of white froth. The head develops peaks as it mellows into a long lasting quarter-inch layer and leaves decent lace all the way down. Looks great.

Aromas are pleasant: green grapes, apple, subtle lemon-lime, bubble gum hint, and that musty wet horse blanket funk.

Flavor is good: green apple, lemon-lime, green banana, cut green grass blades, some breadiness, and a slight alcohol finish (upon warming). The tartness is better while cold and fades after warming. There is a peppery note that shows up just as the funk makes a strange flash appearance before the finish.

Feel is a bit prickly for my taste. I was anticipating smoothness given the look of the head.

Overall enjoyable. Wouldn't be opposed to another run at it.

Review from notes 4/08/11.

A: Pours a hazy darker copper color with a chunky, off-white 2.5 finger head. Nice retention and lacing.

S: Some farmhouse hay, nice green apples, some pear, hints of spices. There is some biscuity/doughy malt to round it out.

T: Nice fruit flavors, lots of applies, they are the predominant flavor. Also some bananas and a little bit of pear. There is a good bit of peppery spice as well.

M: A little heavy for a saison, but its not really a problem. Nice carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel.

O: A pretty good saison, enjoyed the apple flavor a good bit.

A: Pours a honey color with a slightly off white head that sticks around forever.

S: Strong aromas of apricots and apples with a yeasty sour note too.

T: Apricot, apple, and pear flavors noticeable right away but, not as strong as the smell would lead you to believe. Finishes dry with a light malt note.

O: Not bad really but I would have liked to have a little stronger fruit flavor.

Appearance: Nice orange-peach pour with a decent head. Slighly hazy

Smell: Nice earthy funk, pears, apricots, apples. A bit bready. Very spring-appropriate beer

Taste: Nice earthy funk and light tartness, again I get pears, lemongrass, granny smith apples and lemons. Also the typical spices like coriander and clove.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, good but slightly aggressive.

Overall: I was impressed with this one, one of the better american saisons out there. I'd love to have something like this on tap locally.

This beer pours a hazy golden color with a finger of foamy white head with no lacing as you drink. The aroma has some fruity notes, but is mainly dominated by bitterness. The taste starts sweet and then becomes fairly empty and then ends sweet again. It is definitely missing something in the middle. The mouthfeel is ok, with a slight hint of overcarbonation. Overall an middle of the road saison.
