Pours a translucent, light brown, iced-tea color. There's a small head that dissipates quickly. Very, very clear.

Smell reveals a slight, lightly roasted malt aroma, with subtle notes of toffee and burnt caramel. Also a little nutty.

Taste displays a very nice, prominent, malty flavor. This is definitely not a rauchbier, but it still leaves an almost smoky aftertaste. A toasted bitterness. Not a hop bitterness, but a coffee bitterness. This is all very noticeable in the middle. It then gives way to a clean, crisp lager finish, but then reappears as an aftertaste long after the beer has left the mouth.

All in all, a very exceptional lager with a nice depth of flavor.

Half-litre bottle: best before 23 Oct 2012, poured on 15 Nov 2012 @ home into a Wolnzacher Brauhaus tall handled tumbler type tankard (so slightly out of date).

Darker than I remember the draught version: this was a deep Mahogany browny red colour with a full cream coloured head. Looked good it the glass I'd choosen.

The nose was fruity, slightly hoppy and grainy with hints of malty molasses.

Taste wise it favoured malts, with fruity notes to the fore, bittering towards the end of each sip.

You don't see beers from this brewery very often in the UK, so when I saw this I had to buy it and re-live the last visit I had to Bamberg, some 6 years ago.

Bought a bottle while staying at the brewery in Bamberg. Alcohol closer to 6% than 5% I would say, not a session dunkel. Strikes me more in the Czech dark style more than a south Bayern dunkel. Aroma of raisins? Dryer than many German dunkels I have had (particularly Munich types). Very tasty.

A dark copper beer with a disappearing head.

Smell of smoky rubber and wood, with notes of malt.

Taste is malty with smoke and rubber. Enough carbonation to make me burb and taste this taste back and forth. Prickly carbonation. Aftertaste is lingering maltbitter with a tyre taste. Although this taste is not a smack in the face, it does tend to annoy me.

Lasting, creamy, but a bit irregular in its bubbling head on a pale brown copper color body. The smell is malty, with an impression of wet grain and some roasted notes of caramel, but a watery one. The taste is a little better, showing some red fruit and grape notes with roasted flavor of caramel. The sweetness is moderate to high. A seltzer water citrusy sparkle. The slightly grainy aspect of the smell is more subdued in the taste, appearing only discretely in the aftertaste. There's not much to say about the mouthfeel, except maybe that the roasted notes are a bit unbalanced.
Decent, but probably more enjoyable with food than served alone.

Pours clear dark brown with small tan head that fades fast. Aroma is sweetish grain, faint hops and notes of rubber.

Taste is toasty malt, notes of fruit with spicy bitter semi-dry finish and smoky aftertaste. Mouthfeel is smooth light-medium with below average carbonation and mellow alcohol warming towards the end of the glass.

I liked it. Very drinkable and flavourful beer for a calm evening.

Served on-draught into a .5L Fassla bierkrug at Fassla. Reviewed from notes.

A: Pours a two finger head of no cream, bad thickness, and below average retention. Unique dark brown colour is semitransparent, which is extraordinarily rare in my experience. I don't know how they managed to make dark brown semitransparent, but it works.

Sm: Slight nutty hops and caramel. Scent is very light in strength.

T: The hoppy body is complemented by caramel and slight nuts. It's simple, with some difficult to distinguish amber hops present. Balanced well but built poorly.

Mf: Smooth, buttery, and wet. Doesn't quite match the flavours of the body.

Dr: Standard Bamberg pricing. It's easy to drink, but the quality is far from fantastic.

Had 50cl bottle in their taproom, served in a tall and slender glass mug. It is a dark brown, almost mahogany color with an offwhite head. It has a lovely rich malt character, with a touch of lingering bitterness. Some hint of raisins, caramel, woodsiness and chestnuts to go with its toasted grain character. Drinkable and lovely.

50cl serving in seidel at Faessla, Bamberg

A - Copper body with excellent clarity. 2 finger head produces average lace and retention
S - Notes of toffee and vanilla. Some fresh bread there too.
T - Toasted malts with a little vanilla. Disappates to a thin weak finish.
M - Medium body and carbonation
D - Smelt promising but didnt deliver in flavour. Forgettable.

While the Fässla pils didn't do it for me, I found this to be more up my alley.
Worth noting that this seems to be a bottle-only product. Even at the brewery they're pouring it from the bottles in the back. Keep in mind that those bottles might've been filled the same day, so in this case, freshness is no issue.
Deep, dark brown - nearly black. Tons of foam and lacing.
Seems like this is walking the line between a dunkel and a schwarz.
The flavor profile also seems to reflect that. Semisweet chocolate malts, a bit of roasty coffee character, and a slightly dry finish coming from both the hops and the dark malt used.
Goes down like water - mine was gone in no time.
Not the most experimental thing I've ever had, but a nice tasty brew that goes down the path that I tend to enjoy.
I think this is a good all-weather beer since while I was there it went from hot and sunny to cold and rainy in minutes. This seemed well suited to both conditions.

Hmmm what can I say another classic example of a fraenkisch dunkel. Pours kind of a dark ruby smells of malted grains some caramel, chocolate and roast nuts also exist very little hops.

Mouthfeel is good with medium carbonation and medium body but not great and drinkability is very high.

A nice pleasing brown color to it. This beer has a nice subtle malty sweetness to it that is followed by a mild hop bite to it, that I found quite refreshing on this particular occasion. My beer sodden taste buds thought there was a hint of smokiness to this beer as well.

Tasty offering from our friends at Fassla... Pours a pleasing copper color, with a thin, fine, tan head - which sticks around in a thin layer with so-so lacing. Nose is malty with some caramel, but too much on the mild side. Could be considered a bit below medium in general on the mouthfeel scale. Flavor suggests some nice malt, a bit of caramel (again), as well as a decent, roasty flavor throughout. Decent Bamberger bier!

Two bottles purchased from Kaufmanns in Bamberg.

.5L bottle served in Fassla beer glass.

A- Deep brown with hints of amber. One finger head with little retention. Little lacing.

S- Toasted sweet malt and hops.

T- Caramalized malts with a distinctive bitter aftertaste. Noticible honey and spice.

M- Medium bodied and mild carbonation.

D- Slightly better on the tap, much lighter carbonated but still a good beer.
