I decided to stop by Holiday Wine Cellar on my way down to O'Brien's for the 24 July BA Gathering. Just east of the 78 Fwy in Escondido, this store was initially hard to spot until I niticed the giant "LIQUOR" sign out front of the Alpine village-inspired building.
Although wines are the bulk of this store's business, the manager does a fine job of keeping a variety of superb beers on the shelves. Not much is available outside the coolers but what is there is excellent. I saw a gift basket of four Stone IRS bombers and the IRS specialty glass, a nice display of Fantômes, and Yulesmith plus some other Belgian brews. Additionally, they have an outstanding selection of specialty glassware. In the coolers were a nice selection of local offerings, West Coast brews and some hard-to-pass by Belgian, British and German brands. St Bernardus Abt 12, Rochefort 8 and 10, and a number of more hard to come by Belgians graced the coolers. The U.S.A. was well repersented too, with West Coast offerings from Rogue (including their Imperial Pilsner), Ballast Point, Lagunitas, Stone, Alesmith, Hoptown, Marin, Moylan's and others available. Prices were pretty good and everything was well-marked so you knew how much you were gonna shell out. I left with three Yulesmith's, three Pizza Port Frank IPA's, a Saison Dupont, and a Fantôme Black Ghost.
The service was okay but nothing special. No one came to see if I needed any help as I virtually crawled into the cooler to get every bottle of Frank within reach. Still, the selection and quality easily make up for the somewhat indifferent service. Holiday Wine Cellar is a gem of a store for those people in the area or passing through Escondido on the I-15. Certainly worth a stop.

I graduated HS and grew up in Escondido, and whenever I come back to visit my family I always make a couple of stops here during my vacation. If you do not feel like stopping by one of the many breweries in the North County, you could always stop by Holiday Wine Cellar to find and pick up some unique beer offerings. For me, this is the best bottle shop in the North County of San Diego. Wen I stopped in last week during my last trip, I was able to buy Lost Abbey Track 8, Older Viscosity, Peche Mortel, Hopparillo, Swami's, and Belching Beaver Old Dirty Barrel. They even had Mogli, which I can never find in Northwest Washington. This place has a great selection of craft beer, plus it also sells wine, liquor, and cigars. The employees were helpful and mostly nice, one guy seemed like he was having a bad day, but he was still helpful. The only change I would recommend is, brighten the place up a little. Well...it is supposed to be a cellar...

What a fantastic store. I came out with almost 2 cases of a variety of delicious brews and the customer service was excellent. I received help and recommendations from two associates. Sadly I had to leave some items behind but it was a gem of a beer/wine/spirits store. Don't forget to check out their walk in cooler behind the beer coolers. They also have a rewards program where you can get some discounts later.
