Glass; Ayinger willi glass

Leikeim's schwarzbier is an enjoyable dark German lager that brings in roasted and bitter character, on the European scale (that is, fairly modest and subtle), for an interplay of flavors that's both noticeable and sessionable. For it's price ($2.99) and taste complexity, this is a very nice schwarzbier overall if you're able to find it.

Pours a 2cm head of very light tan, composed of small to medium-sized bubbles with above-average retention, which eventually recedes to a thick ring around the glass and a single large island of wispy foam. Lacing along the sides of the glass is substantial, literally cobwebs of the stuff. Body is a dark brown color and nearly opaque when out of the light, light bringing out a dark amber hue to the beer. Carbonation is visible, but sluggish.

Aroma has a focus on lager yeast and slight breadiness with very modest undertones of roasted malt and cocoa. The scents are not unpalatable in any way, but are not particularly distinguishing from any other particular schwarzbier, nor are they very robust.

Overall flavor profile is of lightly roasted malt with some mild cocoa, sweetness, and European hop bitterness. An easy-drinking dark lager with some complexity arising from the roasted barley and hop choices. Tasting opens with malt sweetness, lightly roasted barley, and some modest cocoa. Mid-palate sees maintenance of the light roast barley and modest cocoa, with an appearance of slightly floral and bitter hops, all atop a base of caramel malt sweetness. Back of palate is of lightly roasted barley, some modest cocoa, and mildly bitter hops. Lingering aftertaste of light, roasted malt, some cocoa, and bittering European hops.

Beer is medium to medium-heavy bodied, with medium-low levels of carbonation that combine to produce a smooth, slightly foamy or creamy mouthfeel.

Picked up a swing-top from Euro Market for $3.50. It's surprisingly bitter. The malt is toasty and roasted with mild cocoa. There's an earthy caramel, almost licorice undertone and a pinch of spicy hops in the finish. Very drinkable. I think I need to find another bottle.

Tasting from a small de Molen goblet.

A: Pretty little beer, dark transparent brown, almost identical to the bottle it came from. Slightly off-white head, minor lacing.

S: Toasty malts and brazil nuts.

T: In line with smell, with lingering roastiness. Resemblance to brazil nuts is uncanny. Gets a little sweeter as it warms.

M: Light body with healthy carbonation, malt flavor lingers a bit.

D: Pretty good, I'm down for another bottle or two.

1 pint .9oz beer
Served in a flute glass

A - It is ruddy brown with ruby highlights. About two inches or tan head capped off this visual.

S - I get hints of cocoa and dark fruit. There are some floral hops in the aroma.

T - Flavors are cocoa and dark fruit are balances with slightly bitter hops with a metallic taste.

M - It has a moderate mouthfeel to it.

O - I have had more flavorful beer in this style, but this beer is more traditional. It would make a great session beer.

A: The beer is very dark garnet in color (black when viewed from a distance) and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high off white head that gradually died down, leaving a large patch of bubbles in the center of the glass and a thick collar around the edge.
S: Light to moderate aromas of malt extracts are present in the nose along with some hints of roasted malts.
T: Like the smell, the taste has flavors of malt extracts and toasted malts along with slight hints of sweetness and roasted malts plus a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink but isn't quite as complex as other beers in the style.

Flip-top, half-litre: best before 20 May 2013, poured into my Wolnzacher Brauhaus glass tankard on 25 Nov 2012.

Fine looking brew: deep ruby red in colour with a good foaming biege head.

Weak nose: malty notes with hints of a UK Mild sort of smell.

The taste was also on the malty side with slight coffee and dark chocolate flavours, but overall it is watery and lacks true character or depth of anything.

Like a lot of the dark lagers I've had: not really enjoyed the experience. They rarely live up to their looks or produce the 'umph' they initially promise.

A - Great ruby dark black color with a ton of carbonation and sticky lacing. Head is opaque in color.

S - Mildly grassy and funky yeasts with underlining cocoa and some coffee.

T - Very clean tasting and the hops really jump at you but never truly get bitter. Some mildly sweet malts and a touch of funky lager yeast but thats pretty much it.

M - Light and crisp. Very easy to drink.

Overall a fairly nice black lager, not too funky or hoppy, but far from the best I have ever had.

Purchased this brew at a German speciality store in So Cal just south of LA. Bought a flip top bottle for $3.49/.5 L

This beer poured a dark brown to dark ruby red - very clear. Tan 1" head with lacing that shrank down to ~1/8" after about 2-3 min. There was a stong malt aroma, with slight coffee and nuts picked up. The mouthfeel was on the medium body side with fine carbonation. On the front end, there was mild coffee taste with malt and some nuttiness. On the back side there was some malty sweetness. I didn't pick up any hop aromas or flavors while tasting.

All in all, I thought this was a pretty good schwartz bier. I'd get it again.

Pours with a very small, off-white head that quickly fades to basically nothing. Color is very dark brown-to-black, with beautiful mahogany and chestnut highlights when held to light. Sweet, toffee malt aromas up front with hints of dried fruit and a faint breadiness in the middle of the nose. An unusual, but pleasant, quality of astringent herb--thyme?--finishes the smell. Flavor is dry and a tad coffeeish, but predominantly bitter licorice. More herbal breadiness per aroma; distinct tones of black pepper; anise. As the beer warms, it seems to be losing its original sweetness, and moving in the direction of bitter herb and coffee, with cedar woodiness. The more I taste, the more I'm reminded of a vaguely familiar flavor--wait, it's Jaegermeister. Not my favorite flavor, but complex enough to merit a "4." Mouthfeel is tingly and herbal, with a dry, sticky, tenacious finish. So tenacious, in fact, that I think I'll be satisfied with just this one bottle. Certainly not what I'm familiar with in a schwarzbier... not for session drinking, this was more like an herby digestif. Not sure why this review was so different from the others, although this was an interesting beer to explore.

Schwarzbier
Brauerei Leikeim
Style: Schwarzbier
ABV: 4.90 %

LOOK: Swingtop pint bottle opens with a fierce pop. Dark brown, bordering on black and nearly opaque. Off white head forms and leaves lace down the glass.

SMELL: Roasted malts, bread and grain make up most of the aroma. Faint wisp of smoke and herbal note.

TASTE: Deeply roasted malt flavor, spent grains, dark bread, and light herbal hop bitterness. Clean flavors highlighting the roasted malt flavor and clean lager yeast.

FEEL: Medium bodied, crisp, well carbonated, smooth on the palate.

OVERALL: A standard Schwarzbier from Germany. Simple beer, but that is part of its charm. A relatively light, super drinkable version of the style.

Appearance
Black with a big tan head

Smell
Really lovely nutty smell, like cashews, along with toasted malts

Taste & Mouthfeel
Thin body but creamy mouthfeel; flavors follow nose of nuts and toasted malts in addition to some chocolate--very nice.

Overall
Maybe the best schwarzbier I've had... It's extremely drinkable with its great balance, flavor, and smell.

The body presents a dark, ruby red body with a thick, creamy, off-white head. There is a funky, malt and cut grass smell to the beer; a little stale in quality. Taste lacks any clear distinction; kind of weak and somewhat bland overall. Bitterness comes across pleasingly. Light bodied, clean and dry.

A fair yet unassuming black lager. Good but not very impressive overall.
