I want to be a Viking. I want to run amok pillaging and looting the shores of England from my longboat. Unfortunately this is the 21st century and I am not afforded this option, so I'll have a Viking Lager instead.

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a stein.

A: Very typical Euro Pale Lager clear golden body with an excitable half centimetre white head. It's hard to get excited about a typical Lager so rather than continue looking at this beer I spent the time laughing at lolcats, a particularly entertaining one can be found if you type "Dunecat" into a search bar - lolcats be funny!

S: The usual mixture of bread yeast, adjunct grains and vegetal matter, one whiff and I can tell I'm in for an average experience like Carlsberg, Bavaria, Hollandia, Oranjeboom, [insert name of Euro Pale Lager here].

T: Tastes almost like a cider with that classic apple and soda water flavour. The only thing that stands out and shouts "beer!" is the bread yeast. There are no detectable hop flavours and it finishes flat - neither dry or bitter. I will give it crisp if I can describe it as something positive.

M: Lightish body, mid to high carbonation, starts out fizzy but becomes flat real fast.

D: A bit of a let down but at least for different reasons than usually expected from a Euro Pale Lager - most bad ones have a "skunkiness" to them but this one is just a bit on the boring side. If I want to drink something that tastes like cider I will buy a cider. There's little more to it than a crisp apple/yeast flavour. That being said I've rarely had my socks blown off by a Euro Pale Lager anyway.

Food match: Fish and chips with a wedge of lemon, the citrus from the lemon will compliment the beer a little bit.

Briefly, all to style for Euro Pale Lager, save a really quite watery mouthfeel, and a unusual lemon zest flavour note, making it come across as more like shandy with lemonade added.

Won't try again, but at least I can say I have had an Icelandic beer.... hmmm...

Pours a light straw color with about 1cm of chunky white head that fades slowly and laces the glass. Smells faintly of noble hops and yeast. Tastes very clean, not much in the way of sweetness or bitterness. The taste and mouthfeel are very watery, nothing interesting. Overall, it's highly drinkable, mostly because there's no taste to get in the way.

500mL can (canned 2/14/2013) into an English pint glass. Pours a clear golden color w/ a fluffy bright white head that leaves behind some lace. Moderate carbonation.

Aroma is grainy and mildly floral with a hint of ripe banana.

Taste follows nose. Pale slightly fruity malt, floral Old World hops, neutral yeast. Just a hint of bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is clean and crisp, light and drinkable. Pretty watery.

Overall an unremarkable beer you don't have to think about.

500ml Can

Appearance – Clear yellow colour with a below average size fizzy white coloured head. There is a high amount of carbonation showing and there is a fair amount of lacing. The head lasted for around 2 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Grains, bread, malts, grass, hops

Taste & Mouth - The beer has a high amount of carbonation. I can taste breads/grains mixed with light hops and some corn. I can also pick up on some malts and a slight grassiness. It finishes with a spicy and bready aftertaste.

Overall – The taste was fairly well balanced and it is the best of the Viking beers that I have had so far. The carbonation level might be a little too high, but other than that it has a nice refreshing taste and feel.

Poured form the tap into a branded pint glass in Reykjavik, Iceland.

A: Pure gold with a bit of carbonation showing through. Head was nearly nonexistant. What was there was pure white with little retention. May have been due to the bartender.

S: Pure grain. Nothing else. Slightly sour though. Like sticking your nose in a barrel full of grain.

T: One of the "beeriest" beers I have ever had. A lot of rough grain. No nonsense and no real other taste in there. Maybe some corn sweetness. Finishes coarse with a twinge of balancing bitterness.

M: Rough and finishing a bit watery.

Very expensive for what it is, but that's just how beer is in Reykjavik. All else out of the picture it's a solid pale lager. However, with the price factored into the equation, it's a horrible investment if you're in Iceland. Go with liquor, which is cheaper and better here.

Poured from a half-litre can into a small flare glass.

A: I don't know if it has something to do with the glass (I *think* it's clean) or my pour, but I got a LOT of bubbles sticking to the sides which progressively floated upward. Otherwise a very, very pale-clear yellow with no head.

S: Virtually none except a metallic grainy sweetness.

T: Not a fan, I don't think. It's metallic and slightly sour, flavours obscured by heavy carbonation and an overall light body. Middle taste and aftertaste are boring, bland, and slightly bitter.

M: Watery, metallic, and bitter. Lots of carbonation.

D: Fairly drinkable, but not very good. Iceland is fantastic, but their beer just isn't up to snuff. Allegedly, they've only been brewing since 1989. It shows -- stick to the imports while you're here.

Aroma is adjuncty with a sweaty corn/grain aroma that truly offends. Yellow/Gold body with a wispy white head. Sweet adjunct dominated fore. Mild honey notes, corn, sugar and starch...phbbbt. It's very much in the vein of every underfunded lager brewery that whips out a Bud or Becks clone only it's not nearly as well brewed (manufactured) as Becks or Bud.
