A - poured with one finger of white foam on to of a milky, golden colored body. The head fades slowly and leaves nice lace.

S - spicy aromas with some musty hops and a hint of lemon.

T - spicy rye up front with soft, grainy malt in the middle. Pepper and lemon notes in the finish with some herbal hops.

M - medium-thick body, moderate carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - not bad, this is basically an american wheat, but better than most of the examples of that dismal style.

A: Hazy orange-yellow. Soft, staying thin, white head that gives off a good lace.
S: Grapefruit, lemon citrus, hops, and buttered biscuits.
T: Oh wow, an amazing sweetness of oranges and honey, a sticky caramel sauce then lemon hops with a bite. Spicy rye hints and mixes with light bread and candied citrus peel of malts and herbaceous notes.
MF: Smooth and sticky with a medium, edging on light, feel in the tongue.
D: It's an easy, sweet, and spicy drinker, showcasing the fine, plump biscuit notes and subtle rye character.

A growler filled on 29-Dec-10.

A: The rye beer is a coppery amber color, hazy in my glass. Despite being jostled, moved and shaken several times over the past half week, the ale is well-carbonated. It delivers almost two fingers of head that slowly overflows in my glass. The result of the head is a virtual wall of lace from the rim of the glass down to the beer.

S: The rye beer is equal parts toasted biscuit and spicy rye. The breadiness gives the ale heft. The rye isn't as strong as the tap version.

T: More rye in the first sip, dark spicy breads with an anise undertone. Alongside the rye, toasted biscuit flavors drive a rich maltiness. The longer the ale sits out, the more spicy rye wafts out. A nice, sippable rye beer. Hops gradually emerge from the latter part of each sip.

M: The hops aren't as strong as I remember. That leaves the rye to save the day. And it does, adding spicy grains to the ale.

D: An ale that improves as it reaches room temperature, the rye is a little shy at times. Still a good choice for the bring-home growler.

Poured a light copper hue with a one finger frothy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a light rye spice and a grainy hop.

The taste consisted of a doughy malt with a touch of rye spice and a drying herbal hop.

The mouthfeel was toward the creamy side of the style with a residual doughiness.

Overall a very good and easy to drink rye ale.

I tried this at lunch at the brewpub -served chilled in a shaker pint.

A - a very lightly hazed golden w/ very thin pale white cap w/ tiny bead. The lace clings to the glass well

S - A mild rye aroma w/ slightly spice nose and hint of light pine hops

M- A very nice blend of spiced texture and nice bitter hops balance to the sweet edge - the feel has a crisp texture from moderate carbonation w/ a dry finish

T - A very tasty rye which gives a mild sweet flavor w/ a bit of pine hoppiness and complimentary rye taste - the hops have some mild herbal accents which leads to a mild grassiness and more pine in the finish. The malt is there but as a backdrop to the slightly spiced hop w/ slight resinous and herbal acidity as the beer finished dry and refreshingly

D - A highly drinkable ale with mid strength -it paired well with the ale onion soup - so good the balance of rye and hops are spot on...one of the best rye I have had possibly - every thing is in its right place - the best beer I had at Willimantic

Thanks to RomanW70 for sharing this one.
A - Clear apricot with light tan head that falls to a ring. Nice lacing.
S - Sweet malt, hops - grapefruit.
T - The taste follows the nose with a nice dry finish.
M/F - Smooth and nice lightly carbonated. Light/medium body.
D - A very drinkable and fully flavored session brew. My first Willimantic brew and hopefully not my last.

This ale shows a clear amber color with a modest white fuzz for a cap and a similar hint of lacing. The aroma is mild caramel wheat. Not much rye evidenced, not very impressive. The flavor brings some alcohol with a dry grain and citrus. There's a bit of almond nut and lemon bread with melon and light cinamon spice. A bit whimpy in feel but to be fair, this growler was the end of the last keg of the season. So I curved the grade given that they gave this partial growler to me at no charge due to the situation. Not bad but a bit disappointing. Wish i could have had a proper taste.

Draught @ Brewpub: This one poured a cloudy, darker golden color. There was a small white head on it, and only a little lacing from it. The aroma is lighter. Some citrus and rye to the nose. The taste has rye, and some citrus tartness to it. Medium bodied. A Very Nice brew.

Thanks to my Willibrew hookup naproxen for this one.

A-Lightly hazed dark, orange hued copper with a thick, light tan head that reduced to a thin cap and left nice lace.

S-Interesting with a musty nose and bright notes of citrus and sweet malt poking through.

T-Tart citrus and a bit "yeasty". I think this one may have been pulled a bit early. Nice flavours come out when the beer gets a chance to settle a bit. Slightly spicy, drying finish.

M-Medium-light bodied with light lingering bitterness, fairly crisp in the end.

D-Nice...and while maybe a bit green this one ended up being tasty nonetheless. I would like to try this one again.

Growler into Imperial pint on 4/22/09, courtesy of Deuane.

A - Poured a slightly hazy amber/orange body with vigorous carbonation and one-finger creamy white head that settled to a quarter inch of retention and left sparse lacing on the glass. Some yeast particulates are suspended throughout the body.

S - Dank, musty and yeasty with a bit of funk. Akin to a wet basement, if you will. Reminds me of a Belgian IPA. I don't detect much of a rye character; however, there is a mild sulphur presence. Some sweet malts make an appearance.

T - Citrusy and yeasty with some funky notes reminiscent of a Belgian ale. Again, not a lot of dryness present, which is usually characteristic of a rye ale. This is a very yeasty beer overall, with hints of spice in the backend.

M - Medium body with a slightly oily texture and subtle carbonation. Finishes with slight bitterness and mild dryness on the palate.

D - Interesting rye beer that drinks more like a Belgian pale ale or IPA due to the prevalent yeast character. Thought this was not what I was expecting, I still found it pretty enjoyable.

Thanks to RomanW70 for the opportunity to try this one. Served in my Gouden Carolus chalice. Poured the color of polyurethane with no head. Nose was sweet grapefruit and apricots. Taste consisted of light fruit with some hops bitterness. Mouthfeel was light and lively. Easy drinking and amazingly flavorful for a session beer.

Draft @ Willimantic. Pours amber=/range with a medium white head. Aroma of earthy hops and grains of medium strength. This beer has A LOT of flavor for 5.5%. Medium high carbonation and a medium mouthfeel. Nice combination of caramel malts, cereal grain, and piney/grapefruit hops. Has a medium finish with a noticeable cereal grain character. The star of this beer is its flavor, which as strong and robust as I've ever had in a sub 6% beer. Took home a growler.

Reviewed on 5/23/08. On tap at the brewery. Pours a cloudy amber with a small white head. Aroma of floral and citrus hops. Flavor of rye, citrus and piney hops. Slight bitter finish. Pretty hoppy for an APA. Also as the beer warms, the sweetness from the malt starts to come out more. I liked this!

Mighty tasty when it's allowed to warm up a bit.

A: A clear dark yellow colored body with a cream colored head and moderate lacing.

S: A little sweet, a little cereal grain, and little floral. Nothing too pungent.

T: Not as spicy as I was expecting, very sweet up front - almost fruity with an oh so subtle banana hint in the back. The backend is a reserved hoppy bitterness that finishes a little dry and with hints of cereal.

M: A little watery and little dry finish. Not bad though.

D: Very drinkable. Not really what I was expecting but I like this. Considerably more refreshing compared to the other IPAs I normally drink.

Served as part of a flight at Willibrew.

A: Pours a tawny amber with hazel notes when held to the light. A slick, bubbly film coats the brew.

S: Smells sweet and delicately hopped. Slightly spicy and tart too.

T: I've never tasted rye before, but this brew is spicy and hopped, but balanced with an oily sweetness from the malts. Pretty grainy all things considered, but certainly a sharp taste.

M: Mouthfeel is medium bodied, given the slick taste.

D: It's an interesting brew, one that I might consider getting a full pint of next time I visit, if they still have it available.

I was hesitant to add this brew to my flight, but I'm glad I did. It's got great character and interesting flavors that I wouldn't mind drinking a lot of this to understand. Catch it at Willibrew, if you can.

On-tap 10/26/07 at the brewpub, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is strong containing nearly all hops and spices along with some light malts.

T: The taste is very hoppy and bitter with a little spice. The malt character is light but very bready and provides a little bit of balance, but very much sweetness. The after-taste is also very bitter.

M: Smooth and very crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, clean and very dry finish.

D: Very tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a good beer to drink for a long time but may be a little too intense to drink very quickly. I wasn’t expecting much from this beer but was surprisingly impressed.

Light amber hues topped with a collar of frothy vanilla head cap.

Muted scents of straw and brisk hop dryness.

First swigs: Subdued rye with orange bitterness overlay. Dry rye blend with fruit citrus cascade middle that finishes with a cascade bitter and rye second thought.

Last swigs: Interesting mix of lemony orange and bittering rye. Complimented the Hot Hot Return to Tenders.

A: Pours a cloudy yellowish peach color with a nice frothy white colored head. Excellent lace with nice retention of the head.
S: Nice citric grapefruit and pine notes with a slight background of malt. Grassy hop notes are also present.
D/M: Citrus, pine, and rye flavors are all present. Very smooth on the palate with a dryer finish and bitter aftertaste. Bitterness lingers for awhile and has a fruityness to it. Well balanced beer with a good level of carbonation. Slightly more hop presence than malt.
D: Wonderfully tasty rye beer with a great color--very inviting right from the get go. Rye doesn't overpower this beer but is always present. Superb on tap. Could be a session beer.

A - Slightly hazy straw color, one finger head fades slowly leaving loads of lacing.

S - Light floral hop aromas with hints of savory, zesty spice.

T - Spicy graininess hits first, followed quickly by slight sweetness and white pepper. Spicy white pepper picks up some lemon zest on the smooth bitter finish.

M - Light body, crisp and zesty with long lasting hop finish.

D - Very hoppy and immensly drinkable, this is fast becoming my favorite Willibrew. It is one of the finest Rye Ales I've had the pleasure of imbibing.

Poured from a growler provided by WarriorSoul (thanks bro) into my Great Lakes Brewing Co. pint glass provided by OldFrothingSlosh (thanks secret santa).

Beautifully full creamy 2-finger white frothy head. This is a beautiful head. Really. Lots of tiny bubbles and thick lace starts to appear once the head starts to SLOWLY dissipate.
Cloudy coppery orange color. Nose of sticky pinecones, hops, grapefruit zest and subdued rye and some sweetness reminiscent of fruit stripe gum. You know the striped gum that smells awsome, but loses it's flavor after about 10 seconds. Well, that's the only comparison between the gum and this beer, believe you me.
Now for the taste test. Nice and hoppy, but quite citrusy. Very well balanced. Malty sweetness and some rye comes through, but less than I would have expected. Leaves the tongue a bit dry between gulps. Perfect carbonation to this medium bodied rye.
So smooth I have to stop myself from gulping it.
Finishes with plenty of lace still clinging to the upper reaches of my glass.
Beautiful beer that being right in my backyard, I'm ashamed to say that this was my first taste of it. Dave at Willibrew makes some awsome beers and this is right up there with the best of them.

German-style refillable growler filled at the brewpub.

First pint glass pours with a 1/2" white head, which was gone pretty quickly, but even with just a film remaining continued to lace beautifully. Cloudy orangey amber brew, with a nose of bready rye, as one would expect. Taste begins with lightly piney hops, which intensifies as the experience goe sone, and the hearty rye flavor carries through under it all. Mouthfeel is extra smooth, and drinkability is just great.

The scary thing is, this probably would have even been better if I hadn't gotten sick soon after I snagged this at the brewery and had to leave it sitting in the fridge for 5 days. Highly recommended.

First had this at NERAX earlier this year and it was my favorite brew of the day....and now a growler fill from the pub. Hell yeah!!
Pours a very attractive hazy copper w/ a full finger of creamy vanilla head.
Very aromatic for a rye beer...a nice dose of fruity hops in the nose w/ a subtle sweetness balancing it out.
The taste is great...a big smack of citrus hops up front and a lingering hint of bitterness in the finish. The rye is just another key ingredient to this fine beer...not overdone, but just right.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and the carbonation is perfect.
This offering from Willmantic does not disappoint and would be in my possession all the time if it was possible.
I am surprised this one is not rated a bit higher when compared to others in its class, like Terrapin Rye...no competition IMHO.

I picked this up my first time into CT after the growler law had passed. been looking forward to bringing home one of my favorite all time beers. Lets see why.

A great copper colored ale fills the glass with a foamy head. A bit hazy. Minimal lace while drinking. The head stays at about 1/4 inch all the way down. (impressive since this growler is a week old)

The smell is a balance of citrus hops of orange more than grapefruit. some malt and a touch of bread. A tangy sour note is slightly present.

MMM! The rye is there just enough to change the taste from a pale ale. Not sour like Roggenbier though. A dry bready character is the backbone as hops wave hi-lo from beggining to end. finishes dry with a nice snap.

Nice medium body thats makes it refreshing but you cant drink it too fast. As for drinkability though; all day, everyday, any time of year. Its a session beer for those who like hops (like me) and is dry enough to make you keep coming back for more. one of overall favorites.

Creamy off white head that leads to thin, ringed lacing throughout the pint glass. A crisp looking dark copper in color.

Slight citrus and very evident floral hop aromas intermingled with some complimentary spices: cracked pepper and rye.

Big and beautiful amount of cascade hops giving this rye its citric qualities: lemon, orange; and of course a hefty mouthful of floral hops. The added rye contributes some pepper and other spiced grain. The spices act as a nice compliment to the intensity of the cascades; careful not to overpower the high hop profile. Finishes slightly dry and slightly bitter. A great lemon and floral hop aftertaste.

Medium bodied; almost on the lighter side for the style due to the more prevalent cascade profile.

A perfect beer in terms of drinkability for those of us hop lovers (or for any beer lover). Light, flavorful, and a must try if you visit the brewpub.

Just had this brew with dinner tonite, along with the Harvest ale on cask but I cant add that one (20 beer limit) :( But I can do this one for now.
The brew is orangish brown kinda like the burnt siena crayons. Some head but mostly gone very quickly upon the arrival of the beer. The aroma is dominated by floral hops but there is a subtle spiciness there too from the rye malts.
The first sip is tasty and the dominate flavor is again the hops. Not a lot of malt balance here but that is probably due to the less agressive flavor of the rye. There is some rye flavor underneath the hops which gives a nice tanginess to the brew. The mouthfeel is a little on the lite side which enhances the drinkability of the brew.
The finish is clean and the brew is overall thrist quenching. It went went with my garlic/walnut chicken.
I will definitely get this one again on my next visit.
