On tap @ the Willimantic Brewing Company (Willimantic, CT) on 9/30/11. Served in a pint glass.

“An unfiltered Pale Ale brewed with Pilsner and Crystal malts with plenty of Columbus and Cluster hops for that tropical grapefruit kick.”

Pours an unfiltered looking gold, with a thin covering of bright-white head. This maintains some foaminess around the edges of the glass, leaving back a decent looking cascade of rich spotty froth. The aroma smells of grapefruit pith, leafy notes, and a touch of spice. A fairly crisp and bready smelling sweetness rises up underneath. This is OK overall but seems like it could use a bit more strength in the nose.

Malts have a light neutral sweetness to them in the taste, with a sugary and doughy character to them that help buffer against a fresh, yet moderately bitter feeling, citric bite. Some softer tropical fruit character comes in off the sides and subtlety mingles in with the sweetness of the malts. Those citrus flavors do gain some strength as this warms; with this finishing fairly dry with a bit of lingering bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and initially sharp feeling on the tongue before getting much more soft and creamy feeling as this works itself around on the palate.

While this initially wasn’t giving up a whole hop-wise to me, I will say that a good bit more grapefruit flavor did pick up the longer this sat in the glass. At least enough anyway to help muster up a zesty crispness on the palate and make this relatively thirst-quenching. This overall ended up pretty decent but maybe could have used a bit more complexity.
