Labatt Blue Royale Light has a very thick, white head, a mostly clear, yellow-gold appearance, quite noticeable fine white particles roiling about, and a surprisingly heavy amount of lacing clinging to the glass. Aroma is of pungent, sweet & sour grain (think Genesee Ice). Taste is of sweet, malt liquor-like beer, a bit of alcohol, and even a back-note of hops. Again, think of Genesee Ice. Mouthfeel is light and watery, and Labatt Blue Royale Light finishes crisp, clean, and refreshing. How this is a light beer with 140 calories, I would like to know.

Huge 24 ounce can brewed and bottled where all great Light Canadian lagers are brewed, Rochester, NY of course. This is direct competition with AB's blue bottled Bud Light Platinum weighs in at a 6.1% abv. Pours into a glass pale straw color completely filtered with creamy white textures, fine speckled lacing. Aromatics corn, cereal malts, clean somewhat clean aroma nothing like those malt liquors that normally come in these 24 ounce cans. Flavor fortified sweet flaked corn and cereal notes, cooked veggies, grainy husk notes, mild generic hop burps pretty blah at least it was brewed at High Falls Brewing aka Genesee Brewing. Mouthfeel highly carbonated seltzer water with some slight residual sugars tying all of this together. Not horrible but definitely leaves a lot to desired, What's the guy doing with hoser beer from Canada...I would have thought that Molson Canadian would cease and desist letter for this beer being labeled as a light Canadian Style lager.

Labatt just rolled this one out to grab the niche Budweiser opened up with Platinum. It might be the worst thing yet, but where Platinum was all fumes, turpentine, and the essence of nightmares and terror, this beer is tolerable.

It's clear and a brilliant bright pale-medium gold. The pure white head actually shows a sturdy fluffy consistency and decent construction, forming a cap of half a finger's height and leaving some pretty even, if slight, spotting.
The smell is all ethanol, grains and sweet corn, though not to the degree Platinum takes it. Some malts actually show, and even a bit of leaf might just be in there.
Sweet up front and all the way through, it somehow never takes the sickening turn Platinum or some of the "Ice" beers (predecessors?) do. It's grainy and corn husk is certainly there, but it has less of the stomach-turning vegetal notes. The ethanolic heat is absolutely there, but not to the degree of its (horrific) competitor.
It's bright enough, certainly crisp, and even a little fluffy. It is also, though, thin and watery with a slickness to it and by no means clean.

Labatt Blue Royale Light
12 oz. blue glass bottle, ink-jet dating on the neck of the bottle is illegible
$1.83 @ Weis Market, Conshohocken, PA

Apparently blue glass does not protect beer completely from UV rays because I smelled a bit of skunkiness when I first poured this beer.

And what's up with these "light" beers that are actually stronger than normal beers? This one's 6.1% abv with 141 calories as opposed to Labatt Blue which is 5.0% and has 153 calories. If flavor doesn't matter and you're just trying to save calories, but still want the alcohol, drink vodka (an ounce of 80 proof/40% abv is just 64 calories)!

Moving forward, there aren't a lot of hops to it (in flavor, aroma, or bitterness) but at least the alcohol balances the malt. The malt component is lacking as well. I'm not sure if it's adjunct as it doesn't really come off that way, but neither is it particularly grainy. It's just bland, and without any hop flavor to give it a little spice it's just dull. So, the alcohol balances the malt, but does the malt reign in the alcohol? For the most part, yes. The alcohol is apparent, but it's not detracting; and I guess if that's why you're drinking this beer, you want to know that it's there. Based on the number of strong Canadian beers I've tasted in Canada I might suggest that the alcohol is a 'flavor' component they're looking for, but this is not a Canadian product, it's an American product! It's made by Labatt USA. This beer is neither brewed nor sold in Canada. Therefore I can only surmise that this is being marketed to compete with Bud Light Platinum, which also comes in a blue glass bottle, and has a similar alcohol and calorie content at 6.0% abv and 137 calories.

It's an interesting product, sociologically, but it's not worth tasting.

Labatt Blue Royale Light brewed by Labatt Brewing Company Ltd with an ABV of 6.1% This brew pours out a nice amber color with a nice white head. This brew has the look of an American style Lager. The smell is rich with grains and some sweetness. So far so good. The taste is not bad, it has a small bit at the end. This brew is smooth all the way around. The aftertaste is fruity but it is not bad. Labatt Blue Royale Light has a nice balance to it for having an ABV of 6.1% The mouthfeel is nice and crisp. They did a nice job with brew. Overall I'm giving this brew a 4 out 5. I would buy this brew again.

Poured from a blue 12 oz. bottle. Has a light golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of corn, some grains. Taste is mild, light grains, a touch of corn, a tad more flavor than your average light beer. Feels light in the mouth and overall is a mediocre beer.

24 ounce can, I think I bought this at Kroger or some other grocery store recently. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a clear straw gold color with an inch white head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. Not much to the aroma, just smells like corn and grainy malt to me. I think it tastes pretty much the way it smells, but there's some sweet malt and a white grape flavor noticeable too. It wasn't too bad at first, but I was liking it less and less the closer I got to finishing the can. Mouthfeel/body is light, it's smooth and is well carbonated. I don't think I'd buy this again, but I'd drink it if someone gave me one. I've had far worse brews than this, not bad for being a "light" lager.

Today is a Blue day, what with my having just re-reviewed Bud Light Platinum, which also comes in a pretty blue bottle. I will admit to being a sucker for pretty things and this spent bottle will go on my windowsill to brighten my day as needed.

From the bottle: "Light Canadian Style Lager".

My agro pour netted two fingers of rapidly dissipating fizzy bone-white head with poor retention. Color was a washed-out light yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4) with NE-quality clarity. Nose actually smelled halfway decent, filled with adjuncts like corn, sure, but not in a sickening way like my last review. Mouthfeel was thin, light, ethereal and the taste was like so many of its ilk: slightly husky, some corn, relatively sweet. Finish was semi-sweet and mostly unobtrusive. This would be a great lawnmower beer. Me = damning with faint praise.
