CAN you dig it? Yet another new beer in a CAN for me to review!

I got a finger's worth of fluffy, bone-white head, but with low retention. It was as if it could not wait to reduce to wisps. Nose had a distinct lager-like sweetness, hearkening back to a time in my youth when I thought that all beers smelled this way. Mouthfeel was medium but there was very little taste to it. The finish was equally unobtrusive. It was simply a mild lager at a reasonable price. It sure beat some of the crap that I've subjected myself to in cans of late.

The beer was served cold and poured into an Imperial Pint glass.

Appearance: The beer poured a very nice coppery coloration. Active carbonation dances to the surface of my glass and leaves a white film of head on my glass.

Smell: This beer has a slightly malted slightly corny aroma. A twang of grassy hops. The alcohol peaks its head up but I think its some of the sweetness of this beer.

Taste: The beer has a suggestion of light toasted malt. A bit of tannin and hop flash enough bitterness to make the flavor good. Very clean flavors.

Mouthfeel / Drinkability: The body of the beer is light but not watery. Very smooth and well rounded. The carbonation level works well with the beer. This isnt a half bad throw back beer.

I grabbed the big 710ml can, looks very old school, and I really liked the can, anyway pours out that deep golden yellow color with a bit of head, id say one inch, looks like every other ice beer. Smell, is a tad above average, smells a bit cleaner than most ice beers. This is the best tasting ice beer I've ever drank, it goes down super clean, and tastes smooth, no lingering aftertaste, slight bitterness, and not sweet. Damn good. This is a nice full bodied beer, so the mouthfeel is good. This is a perfect beer for a bbq out in the heat, and when paired with a hamburger, this beer is golden. I love this beer.

A - Poured a straw color with a white head that leaves lacing behind

S - Is of corny grainy malt

T - Is just like how it smells but the malt is sweeter

M - This beer has a light body with medium carbonation to it

D - I was a little surprised with this beer it really wasn't all that bad sure there are better beers out there but when you only have two dollars and want a beer while in a NY gas station its a good buy for a 24oz can

Taste- very slight grains with a very mild hops and slight malts, slight bitter hops finish, nothin over powerin here yet a nice smooth palatable flavor here

Mouthfeel- smooth light and refreshing palate, light bodied and guzzalable

Drinkability- Highly drinkable, very crisp and refreshing, a good session beer at a good price, gets you buzzed quick and fast at a price thats hard to ignore, very well better than most American macros, worth a shot or two

The beer pours a pale gold color with a 1/4" fizzy white head that fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a faint pilsner malt scent along with a dry lager yeast aroma. There's nothing spectacular here. Just a crisp, clean smelling beer. The taste is average. It has a smooth, pilsner flavor that's easy going down and clean in the finish. There is little malt or hop taste here, but it's crisp and refreshing. The mouthfeel is average as well. It is a low bodied beer with good carbonation. This is a pretty good macro lager. I'm a little partial to the ice beers. They're easy drinking and they've got a bit more bang for the buck.

Appearance: A nice gold color not too light but not too dark. I personally like this full golden color. A nice white head that goes away fast but as you drink there is a nice lacing on the glass.

Smell: WOW! I smell heavy alcohol and some light grains. I didn't like the strong smell of the booze it was a little off putting.

Taste: A nice tasting brew with a hint of bitterness but a good amount of malty sweetness with a slap across the palate of comforting alcohol.

Mouthfeel: It's a full mouthfeel but not thick and heavy. It remains refreshing.

Drinkability: I could drink this for sure. It's smooth, refreshing and full. Due to the large amounts of booze i'm not sure I can drink more then a few.

Beer bottle (33cl.), tasted in 2003.
The idea is to freeze beer (during the manufacturing process) to trap and remove ice crystals to improve flavors.

Appearance : Blond/amber color, with white foamy head (not persistent).
Smell : malted aroma.
Taste and mouthfeel : light, sweet with a good malty persistence.
Drinkability : an average beer in the style lager.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far, well, a long time ago... I was in my mid 20's and still living at home with mom while going to school. I didn't have much money, so it was Busch, Keystone and MGD for me. Great Lakes Brewing sponsored a show on at 4pm on Saturday on my public station that I caught at random. It was Michael Jackson's Beer Hunter. For the three weeks it was on, I went across the street to get a couple cheap beers, and those were Labatt Ice 22 oz. Seems strange that I'd watch such a show with such a ho-hum beer. I only taped the last two, not knowing they would be the last two in the series. Fast forward to a year after MJ passed on. What the hell, time to drink a LI, review it for BA and watch those two episodes.

A: Yellow, fizzy, little lace and decent head that faded fast

S: More alcohol than anything, typical for this style. A little bit of fruit from the hops, but mostly corn.

M: Thin, little aftertaste, does foam pretty well.

T: Corn soda, a little hops and alcohol, but there is a slight balance to this, making it more palatable than average.

D: 99 cents a can. Same price as I bought it for in 1992 or so. Lawnmower beer, good for a swig for nostalgic purposes, otherwise...Next.

Poured from a black can. Surprisingly for a macro, this one keeps a short head leaves lacing.

Yeah, this beer could be worse, but it still isn't any treat to drink. The aroma is fowl with dusty-smelling malts and acrid lager character. The flavor actually tastes decent at first, with the big, sweet bready malts of an export lager, but then a big sour milk and citrus tang comes through to ruin it all. What a waste of water.

Big white head of medium sized bubbles faded back in under a minute to a wispy ring. Retains the ring but doesn't lace. Light yellow/gold color. Aromas of bitter/sour yeast. High carbonation makes this beer lively on the tongue and a little hard to pull flavors out of. Semi-sweet with some malts and yeast. The carbonation adds some body to what is otherwise a very thin beer. Strange finish. Straightforward and quite boring. Skip it.

A seethru gold that leaves behind some decent head that is thin but has staying power. Again, a Labatt's beer with no real smell - faint hops and some husky veggies or something (now I'm making up shit). This Labatt's packs a little punch (I remembered it doing so) as this medium-bodied brew goes down smooth and a tad creamy. Even with some graininess and adjunct feeling on the tongue, the hops provide a little citric boot and there's some slight sugary maltiness. There's also a drying sensation from the somewhat high ABV. It should be noted that if you go over the border to get this (bottle or can) it sells at 8% ABV - I was drinking it up there and a few of these kicked my ass because they were smooth and went down easy.

24oz. can. Pours the usual fizzy golden macro hue with a short lived one finger head that settles into a thick collar. The usual macro fizziness, lotsa bubbles. Aroma is the usual cheap malt, corn, cooked veggie/wet cardboard macro bouquet. Taste is clean, sweet, light malt with little or no hops to get in the way. The flavor is really light & subdued for an "ice" beer. All-in-all, it's your basic, amped-up macro beer. Good for backyard cookouts, tailgate parties, getting wasted at a frat party, or like tonight, washing down some takeout Buffalo Wings. The kind of stuff you thought was the bomb as a teenager, but now realize is just swill. If you're gonna go this route, grab some Molson XXX instead.

The more I have other beer, the less I like Labatt Ice. It's not horrible, just less impressive the more one reflects upon it. It pours a light golden color, with a finger of white head. Good start. But the nose does not impress--worse, in fact. There is the whiff of light malt, hints of corn, but unimpressive as a whole. The taste is better, with moderate carbonation bringing forth some malt and sugary sweetness. Still, this is more a beer to have for the result--a good buzz fast--than the product itself. I hadn't had it as such, but judge it so in retrospect. There's less to it than has met the eye in the past.

Labatt Ice isn't a total dud, but rather a decent, smooth, mildly strong beer worth quaffing, not one to savor. It's not good enough for that, and in my estimation doesn't strive to be. It should.

Maybe I'm too used to drinking Molson Ice. I thought I'd switch it up this time and this stuff is horrible. I like regular Labatt alright, but this stuff just doesn't do it for me. The first wave tastes like canned corn with a little white rice mixed in. The after taste is hard to describe because it's barely there. It's sort of metallic and very hollow.

i'm from the south (A.B. country) so imagine my suprise when i moved to western Ny. & discovered LaBatt's beers.. this beer has replaced Bud as my favorite "N. American" Lager.
A nice straw color w/ a white fluffy head wich dissapates quickly, minimal lacing; a yeasty nose typical of most Am. beers w/ some hop aroma; taste is light & crisp slightly watery but at least some hop flavor comes through; light bodied but with much more mouthfeel than most macros; hey, at 1-2 dollars CHEAPER per 18 pk. than A.B. products, this is THE most drinkable beer !

Pours a light yellow color with a head that fades fast. Aroma is strong and grainy with alcohol showing through. A bit sweet as well. Taste is similar in scale except that the alcohol leaves a mouth-numbing bitterness at first which in turn fades into a grain-malt taste. Not too bad for an ice beer and serves its' purpose as such. I do think it's not as harsh as Molson XXX.

Although it's not much stronger than other regular beers (Budweiser is 5.0%), Labatt Ice was the world'd first "ice" beer; and perhaps the freezing process does help to smooth it a bit.

It pours a crystal-clear, deep golden color beneath a good-sized head of white froth. The head retention is quite good, and it leaves some very nice walls of craggy and streaky lace about the glass.

The nose is kind of generic, expressing "beer" in the same way you find it when you walk into a corner bar at noon... lightly sweetish and just semi-grainy, mildly alcoholic, and hoppy but non-descript.

In the mouth it's crisp and then smooth with a fine-bubbled median carbonation and medium body.

The flavor is solid and straightforward. A very basic, just lightly sweet malt flavor is threaded through with a dull, mainly non-descript hop flavor. The hops are somewhat floral, spicy and grassy, but they may as well have come out of a can for all the character they show. A very solid bitterness rounds out the palate, and it finishes dry with a touch of lingering sticky malt and some dull hop residue.

Basic but good. Well balanced and clean with a solid bitterness and hoppy edge. If Foster's is Australian for beer, than maybe Labatt Ice is Canadian for beer. Of course, the Foster's that I get here in the United States is brewed in Canada... but that's brewed by Molson ;)

For a labatt product, this beer is bad, I was really disappointed. Labatt blue has always tasted awesome, so for the extra 1% i thought I'd try labatt ice. It sucked, watery and bad aftertaste. I wouldnt call it a bad beer, its more of sub-good. Not really worth trying.

Damn. Harsh stuff. Pours out to a motor oil yellow color with a short lived head. No lace. Medium low carbonation. Aromas of alcohol and malt. Ugh. Taste is sharply laced with alcohol and adjuncts, with a metalic aftertaste that stays on the palate. Not good. Mouthfeel is far from spectacular. Not a recommended brew. Thanks to Derek for teaching me about the less enjoyable side of Labatt.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a US Tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a pale amber color, but a bit darker than most macros, with a foamy white head that fades quickly and doesn’t leave very much lacing on the glass.

S: The aroma is of corn, grain & malt.

T: The taste has the typical macro malty corn & grain flavor, but a little sweeter than most and an ever-so-slight bit more hops than most. However, despite the 5.60% ABV which is high for a macro, it still seemed a bit watered down.

M: Smooth for the style, light body, medium-to-high carbonation and a clean finish.

D: I could drink a large amount of this beer with ease, but the watered down flavor would leave me looking for something else. I’ve been keeping the style firmly in mind while writing this review, as you can tell. For a macro, this one’s not bad. However, there are others within the style that are cheaper and better.

Pours a clear, medium gold with a medium, slightly off-white, foamy, tight head. Some spotty lacing. The smell has a bit of an adjunct stink to it to go with the moderate-light grain and very light citrus. The taste is lightly sweet with light caramel, bread, corn and a short lemongrass finish. It has a medium-thin body, watery texture and lively carbonation. Nothing special here, just an easy drinking glorified domestic. Not too bad for what it is, but nevertheless nothing I’ll be having again soon.

Pours an extra pale gold hue, very clear. Two finger head with retention and lacing typical of a macro. Sweet alcohol esters, similiar to malt liquor, and not much else. Grain adjunct taste, coupled with a good balance of bittering hops and semi-dry aftertaste. Evenly carbonated with a light to medium body. Smoother than your average Ice beer, with a clean finish. This beer's ability to let the higher alcohol creep up on you can be likened to Moloson XXX.
