Notes/Commercial Description:
Labatt Blue is the best-selling Canadian beer in the world. Introduced in 1951 as Labatt Pilsener, it was named for the colour of its label by fans of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football team. Blue was the first brand in Canada with a twist-off cap and won the silver medal in the International Lager category at the 1998 Brewing Industry International Awards. Labatt Blue, brewed using specially selected aromatic hops, is a well-balanced, fully matured, full-flavoured beer with a fruity character and a slightly sweet aftertaste.

A staple of any Buffalo college student's diet - could be found for $1 in a different bar just about every night of the week. How does it stack up?

Pour into an Alpine Lager mug looks clean as hell - nice sparse carbonation. White tight sudsy head that slims down very quickly. Hey, I've seen a lot worse...

Smells nice for a macro pilsener with more hop and malt character for the average bear. Clean but with a faint tocuh of that macro "swillish" backbite...gets warm and skunky pretty quickly.

Again, shows up with decent Pilsener character - definitely a Germanic hop profile. There is an aftertaste of what can be termed mass-production - I guess it's that corn feeling again.

For what it is, mouthfeel isn't bad, but it does have a strong aftertaste. This was in the back of my fridge for several days but it still stings as too warm. How cold does this stuff have to be? Maybe that's why it's a favorite at and above the border - if it rolls too cold just stick it in a snowbank for a few minutes and you're good to go.

It drinks OK. One of my sentimental favorites for macros. Of course, this may sound like damnation with faint praise, as in saying "one of the most benevolent dictators in Africa," but I've had much worse. Goes best with chicken wings from Duff's or your own deep fryer, or whenever a Bills' or Sabres game is on. Drink extra-wicked-super cold.

This is the epitome of average in terms of beers, remarkably lacking a body or a real strong flavor and feeling like a domestic beer playing dressup in imported beer's clothes. The beer, as a whole, is surprisingly very flat and doesn't bear much taste, although I wouldn't say it isn't drinkable and likely easy to session. I will try to see if I can pick up other Labatt flavors throughout the rest of the year (Light, Royale Light, Lime, Max Ice, etc) , but these beers, after the disappointing flagship brand, will be one of the last I seek out, especially since finding single bottles of some of them proves to be a grating challenge and I doubt I'll be able to drink a six or twelve pack of these before they expire, if they're anything like regular Blue.
