Notes/Commercial Description:
Labatt Blue is the best-selling Canadian beer in the world. Introduced in 1951 as Labatt Pilsener, it was named for the colour of its label by fans of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football team. Blue was the first brand in Canada with a twist-off cap and won the silver medal in the International Lager category at the 1998 Brewing Industry International Awards. Labatt Blue, brewed using specially selected aromatic hops, is a well-balanced, fully matured, full-flavoured beer with a fruity character and a slightly sweet aftertaste.

11.2oz bottle poured into a Shaker pint glass.

Appearance: Clear straw yellow color with plenty of carbonation coming up through the beer. White 1/4" foam upon pouring died down to a thin ring at the edge and nothing across the top. Very mild amounts of lacing noted.

Smell: When first poured, maybe the barest hint of apples and some crisp malt, but after awhile, not even that.

Taste: Mild in taste, crisp, grain is notable, very mild bitter finish with more of a clean mild malt aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Fizzy and very prickly on the tongue, but once that clears, watery. Sadly not good.

Overall / drinkability: Meh is about the best I can say. When its very cold there is still something there, but as it warms up, it's all gone, and at that point you really have to chug the stuff fast to get much of anything out of it. Taste and appearance average for this style of beer and nothing special but not bad. Might be good during a hot day, but otherwise I'm not impressed. Oh well, not everything can be good.

Labatt Blue is typical beer from North America. Pours golden clear with thin white head that eventually dissapates. The smell and taste include mostly grains and subtle hop to clear the pallet. Mouthfeel is light in body with good carbonation. Overall it is drinkable.

Somebody left a decent amount of this beer at my house, so what the heck - I'll drink one for scientific purposes.

A: Poured from the bottle into a pilsner glass, it looks pretty good for what it is - light yellow body with nice rising bubbles and a 2-finger bright white head. Some lace clings to the glass after each sip.

S: OK, this is where it starts to go downhill. Some grain and then corn. Perhaps a faint, faint, faint sense of florally hops - but that might be wishful thinking.

T: Follows the nose - husky grain, corn and maybe some diacetyl coating the tongue (is that possible in an AAL?). Too sweet - too much like corn syrup, I think it is. Finishes with a lingering, mouth-coating sweetness; there's no real bitterness providing any sense of balance. Thankfully it's light overall, or else that sweetness would be particularly off-putting.

M: Light in heft, carbonation appears adequate but there's still a slick feel to it. Maybe that's just the impression from the palate-coating sweetness (or the diacetyl), but there is a surprising slickness here.

O: There was a time when I looked forward to going to Syracuse to visit an old college roommate. He swore by this stuff then - mainly, I think, because it was cheap and perceived as fresh (having come not too far from Canada). But now when I go to Syracuse I visit Blue Tusk and drink good beer. For what this is, it's OK. I've had worse.

In the great Canadian Macro Lager Battle, this loses out to Molson. Fizzy, weak, odorless and just kind of weak tasting, with a distinctly watery and undercarbonated quality. There's really very little to say about some beers, just that I found this had even less taste than Molson, and what was there was tinny.

Appearance- clear, pale yellow, and slightly fizzy
Smell- grainy, mild hops
Taste- Light, flat
Mouthfeel- Carbonated, light-bodied
Drinkability- Nothing great, kind of falls flat.

Overall, it goes down easy if your goal is to chug a few beers at a tailgate.
