This is a very poor example of a porter. Part of a Labatt Mix Pack and definitely the worst of the bunch. This brew is almost tasteless...although it has the color and consistency of Coca-Cola (although a tad bit more watery). There is next to no malt here, maybe just enough for color? I find it ironic that the label says "John Labatt Signature Porter" - I would be hard pressed to sign my name onto anything like this. Definitely a let down, although I can't say I was expecting much. Save your calories and money for something better.

If you didn't know that this was supposed to be a porter, then it's fine - not great - just fine. But it's certainly not a porter. Don't know what Labatt was thinking when they called it this - it would be more suitable to call it simply a dark beer.

11.5 ounce bottle, no bottle date. A friend gave me a bottle recently, figured I'd try it now. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a clear reddish/brown color with almost an inch light tan head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. The brew smells like caramel and roasted malt, and some cola. It tastes like caramel and roasted malt, cola, minerals, and some bittersweet chocolate. Mouthfeel/body is light, it's a bit slick but watery at the same time. It's not one of the better porters I've had, that's for sure. I didn't have any problems finishing the bottle so it's not like it was horrible, but I know I won't be trying this again anytime soon.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance- The beer pours a light brown color with a one finger of fizzy cream colored head. The head fades fast. Once the head is completely faded, it ends up leaving a light level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a sweeter caramel smell mixed with aromas of chocolate and a light roasted malt. Other than these aromas, are some lighter notes of some light grass and herbal hop rounding out the aroma.

Taste – The taste begins with a somewhat light roasted malt flavor mixed with a rather strong level of a caramel sweetness. These flavors create the bulk of the taste, lasting throughout. Toward the middle, a little bit of cocoa comes to the tongue. This very light cocoa is then latter followed by some light grssy hop flavors to leave a rather sweet and moderately crisp flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the lower side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side. A bit of a lower carbonation level and a much thicker body would have suited the style better possibly accentuating the roasted and darker flavors a bit better.

Overall – A little too sweet in flavor and thin in body without enough roasted flavors to balance it out the sweet. Not really the best porter out there.

A - brown body, creamy tan head, good retention
S - not much here, faint chocolate, faint cola
T - chocolate, caramel, cola, slightly roasty
M - thinner body, ample carbonation
O - not the best porter I've had; definitely lacking some aroma, and even for flavor it's pretty lackluster

Appearance - You can see through this beer. In my experience, you can't see through porters.

Smell - What is there for aroma is fine, but I am used to porters having a complex aroma with many layers. This is one dimensional and faint. Seems like maybe they made a porter and then made this beer with the second runnings.

Taste - Light, one dimensional, doesn't taste bad, but I expect more out of a real porter.

Mouthfeel - This has the mouthfeel of a pilsner. Overly carbonated maybe, feels fizzy.

Overall - I think everyone expects more out of a beer labeled porter. I bought this in a variety pack for a really good deal, so for the price I paid I wouldn't expect more. I got the pack for about the price of an american domestic. If you use that as a comparison, this is a good deal.

Served from a 341ml bottle to a snifter

A: Rather black looking an topped with a fluffy beige head.

S: Sweet caramel malts.

T: Just disgusting. Extreme caramel sweetness with no balance whatsoever. Finishes with a metallic tinge. I couldn't even finish it due to this sweetness and poured after I finished half the glass.

M: Decent I suppose.

O: A terrible tasting beer imo. There was no balance and it was just disgusting. My second drain pour after roughly 80 different beers.

by far and away the best brew ive had from labatt, no question. called the classic porter on the label, this one pours a nice thick dark brown color with good carbonation giving rise to an inch of tan foam. the nose is a little sweet, vanilla and dark malts compete for attention. the flavor is sort of divided, roasted barley, burnt toast, and bakers chocolate are the first half, sweet milk sugar and vanilla extract round out the second act. its really quite good, not too sweet, but more than the usual english style porter for sure. smooth texture, fuller body, but id have several of these. overall not about to win any awards, but for a labatt beer, this one is exceptional. nice around the holidays.
