Lucky Lager was introduced to beer drinkers in 1934. The name Lucky was selected from a name-search contest. Fully fermented, Lucky Lager uses select ingredients and hops to deliver a remarkably clean, crisp-tasting beer.

473 mL can purchased from the Niagara Falls LCBO.

Pale yellow golden color, clarity is fine. The head is lacking due to poor retention. Wet hay aroma, not much else ... perhaps a bit of cooked corn. Thin blanket of astringency covers the palate for the most part. Small amount of hop bitterness shows no flavor. Creamed corn flavor dominates the finish.

I quickly realized that this beer was undrinkable and of poor quality. Not recommended.

Another appearance from the kitsch retro department. Nasty dull yellow, no head. Equally appalling aroma, best thing about it was the metallic can quality.

Taste completely missing, again, best thing = metal can. Corn and water are the main ingredients, doesn't even get that mild corn syrup sweetener thing going for it. Clean enough I guess, thanks to the water. Alcohol way to noticeable at this abv.

No hops, yet somewhat bitter, despite all the water. Fughetaboutit.

355ml can. My experience with this offering is limited to one New Year's Eve party, many years ago, when my beer ran out too early, and I took to cans of this. Also, my favorite local bottle shop carries it as well, leading to the situation where I'm standing at the checkout, with a stack of different IPAs, stouts, and Belgians, while the (admittedly stereotypically) homeless-looking patron behind me in line grips their six-pack of Lucky Lager.

On to the beer: it pours a crystal clear, pale golden straw colour, with three fingers of billowy, loosely foamy, and large-bubbled off-white head, which leaves a bit of streaky cobwebbed lace around the glass as it quickly falls away.

It smells of stewed corn mash, soaked Wonder Bread, a middling acetone astringency, and rotten hay. The taste is more grainy, rather sweet cooked corn, gritty mineral water, metallic singed butter, and anemic weedy, herbal hops trying, but failing, to provide some semblance of balance.

The carbonation is average, just dimly frothy, the body pretty much a standard lightweight, and clammy and sugary in its plain-ass smoothness. It finishes sweet, kind of astringent, with adjunct grain and indeterminate skank alike.

Yuck. Bleah. Cheap is as cheap does. Still, not the lowest on the totem pole for the style around here, a position which I believe is permanently reserved for Minhas products. And further, I would easily prefer this over PBR at that certain type of beer-agnostic party.

Not the worst macro I have had, brewed in London. Nothing to look at, a pale yellow with non-existent head. Corn dust aroma. Thin and one sip is manageable, maybe two. The rest was a drain pour. Number one selling cheap lager in Canada. Goes to show you.

Lucky Lager for me is a memory of outdoors and yardwork - also a cult beverage here on Vancouver Island. When I chop wood in mid fall this is the reward. A can of very cold Lucky. So that's what it means. If it is not so cold it makes your hand freeze then the taste is just not the same.

As a beer, it is well below average with the appearance of a glass of watered down piss. Hardly any lace.

As a lager it is below average but has a strange sweet bite when drank. Apparently this is due to the short fermentation time of just under a week.

The cost of a six-pack is under $10 so affordable. It is better than a softdrink. Barely.

Used to drink this quite often way back then, easy drinking, goes down well, nothing much for flavor or smell, just beer to drink. It's a piss yellow color with white fluffy head that gone fairly quick and nearly no lacing at all.Smells of stale corn, musty grass and taste is the same too, goes down well though when well chilled, medium carbs with a bubbly feel going down, usually this is well priced so if you want to just sit around and drink beer for the sake of it and not much into great flavoring, chill it and drink, not that bad.

Honestly, I think beer drinkers have gotten a little too snooty these days. The staple beers of out father's now languish in mediocrity while 21 year old hipsters go around thinking they own the world of beer reviewing. This is where lucky lager comes in, legendary in my home town this is honestly a reasonable beer and I think it's safe to say it is often better than some of its contemporaries. Now it's certainly not a 5 star but it has its perks a) it's cheap and b) it goes down smooth. So why not take a chance on an old classic huh, who knows you might get lucky.

(insert sarcastic comment about luck here)

4.80% abv, 341mL twistoff bottle. Found after a party at my house. Poured into a lager glass.

Appearance is clear yellow, effervescent body under a modest white cream head. Leaves a cloud and a thick collar.

Aromas of metal, spice, creamed corn. No malt aromas at all.

Sweet palate, aggressive carbonation stings the mouth. Oily texture. Loads of residual sugar in the finish, which is short. Could use way more maltiness... weak.
