Another widely available beer that I should have tried years ago. Poured from a 750 ml white, corked and caged bottle into my Chimay goblet. mahogany brown color with some light getting through. Big, delicately bubbling white head that fades to a long lsting covering of the top of the glass. More lacing than a lot of strong Belgians. Looks good!!!

Smell is a bit mild for a Belgian Strong Ale. Some dark fruit: plums, raisins and cherries as well as Belgian yeast.

Taste is more robust. The dark fruit and yeast are prominent as they should be. There is also some candi sugar and caramel malts. Very tasty.

Mouthfeel is rich and sweet. There is a definite alcohol presence that goes beyond warming. The alcohol cuts the sweetness and is not off-putting in itself.

A solid Strong Dark Ale.

As a preface to this review I will admit that this is one of my all time favorites and that I've been craving it, so that might amplify the scores a bit. Regardless, this is my actual opinion on this compared to other strong darks I've tried.

Serving type was a bomber poured into a Mad Elf tulip style glass. Poured smooth and creamy brown, almost like cream soda but a bit darker, with a big fluffy head that dissipated after a minute or so leaving a nice lacing.

Smell is sweet and fruity with a tinge of alcohol and medicine.

Taste is spicy in a way that compliments the fruit and medicine tastes perfectly, alcohol is well hidden considering the size of the brew but still somewhat visible.

Mouth-feel is smooth, not too light yet not at all viscous.

Overall a highly recommended beer to any Belgian ale lover, especially those liking a good spice or fruit/medicine flavor.

Initial pour is a creamy brown, like hot chocolate, but when it fills the glass it's almost black. Extreme dark brown with just specs of lighter colors around the edges. The head is off-tan and a couple fingers thick with good retention. As the head dies, it's leaves sticky tan foam around the glass.

It's got a bready, chocolately nose not significantly different than chocolate cake or brownies. A bit of an earthy, flowery scent I can't quite put my finger on. As it warms, the chocolate scents grow.

The taste is extraordinary. Tastes like a dark chocolate liqueur, with the slightest hint of vanilla added in for good measure. Just nibbles of hops to keep all the sweetness in balance.

As mentioned, it's sweet, but never too much so. It's got a remarkable creaminess to it. Full-bodied. There's alcohol in there, but despite it's strength it hides in the background. This beer really sticks to your tongue.

One of my new favorite beers. The Belgians simply know how to brew beer.

750 ml bottle, served in a Duvel tulip. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a clear, dark caramel brown. Absolutely no head at all on this one, and only minor lacing.

Quite a bit of sweet butterscotch and toffee in the aroma. Dark fruits come through fairly strong, and there's a very prevalent plum character. Some alcohol esters, but nothing out of line.

The taste is much less sweet than the aroma suggests. It's actually quite balanced. Plenty of butterscotch and bready malt. A fairly big citrus fruit component, which I really wasn't expecting. The alcohol is not hidden particularly well.

Carbonation is spot on, though it's a touch thin. Still, it's well done.

A pretty good BSDA, but I don't know how I could ever justify purchasing this in lieu of Chimay Blue.
