Poured on-tap and served in a chalice, the beer is a clear, dark, orange-hued brown coloring with no head. Beer is very clean in the glass. Aromas of toffee and caramel sweetness, with a slight hopping to balance. The nose is balanced amazingly, and very subtle. Extremely smooth in mouth, with a boozey kick right off the bat. Flavors are toffee sweet malt with a ton of old world fruit charcteristics, including dates, currants, and some raisin. The aftertaste is rich and tangy sweet, with a touch of toffee and hops, and a little bit of warmth at the end of the palate. The finish is slick, and almost creamy. Delicious beer! Masterfully blended and balanced.

Poured from an 11.2 oz brown bottle covered with a white plastic label. No freshness date. Single purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA) for $4.50.

A: Very dark brown with scarlet tones sporting a 2-finger beige foamy head with decent retention and a few random splotches of lacing.

S: The aroma is strong with rum raisin, fig/date, and caramel/brown sugar, spices are light with some phenolic clove and a little cinnamon, and the hops are earthy and a little herbal.

T: The flavor is a blast of big time sweetness met with a spicy yeasty aspect and finished with mild-to-moderate bitterness. The caramel and dark fruit components like date and raisin are very dominant but do break off to allow some spice and light vanilla to come through. The hopping must be relatively substantial to attempt to balance this much sweetness and leaves an earthy note. This would be a very good dessert beer. The alcohol is not all that prominent and just gently warming.

M: The chewy, full-bodied mouthfeel is exceptional, especially after allowing it to sit in the glass for 15-20 minutes for some warming and off-gassing of the carbonation, which is pretty lively at first. The aftertaste is brown sugar, black cherry, and earthy hops.

O: I was really impressed with this beer. I will definitely be having this again. It would accompany carrot cake, creme brule, or a lightly spiced dessert very well I think.

Drank from myGulden Draak tulip.

A - Pours a beautiful Mahogany Red colour, with a one fingered off White head that retains well and laces. Perfect.

S - Nice strong spirit like aromas, with plenty of caramel and sweet malts. A little smoke and boiled lollies also present.

T - Spicy dark fruits and a rd wine like carachteristic. The sweetness of candied sugar is very well balanced with some nice boiled lolly flavours. Absolutley no hint of the 10% abv.

M - Medium body and carbonation makes for a very smooth drop

O - A top class Belgian brew that is a must try.

These Belgian beers always do an amazing job creating massive head. This beer has the near explosive levels of carbonation of a Duvel, but is vastly thicker and more creamy. The body is cherry colored, extremely cloudy, and dense.

A blend of cherry, date, fig, rum, and finishing a few spices.

I don't really get the hype on this one. A lot of complex fruity flavors soaked in spiced rum. There's a lot of intense flavor here which I suppose is a big selling point, but the strong alcohol notes really confuse this one. The finish as it warms is taking on a butter scotch flavor that is drowning out some of the alcohol. I really like how this beer is warming up, this one i think is best room temp.

Rather thick with a lack of carbonation in the glass. A bit too much alcohol at first, but it subsides a good bit.

Beautiful beer that has an extremely unique flavor profile for this style. I very well might consider trying this one again. That said at 10.3% it isn't something I'll look for often.

Poured from a 750ml white champagne bottle and served in a tulip glass.

A: Gulden Draak pours a caramel brown with a 3 finger head that disipates into about 1 finger. Wow! They put this thing in a champ bottle for a reason. This is the highest carbonation levels i have ever seen in a beer.

S:Caramel, Dark Fruit and honey.

T: This beer hits you with a mild hop bitterness up front, a nice sweet fruity flavor in the back and finishes off with a little hottness to let you know it means business.

M: The carbonation and the hotness make this a fun beer to drink.

Overall: I rate it a 4.5.

Bottle from an LCBO giftpack, 330ml into a tulip. Best before June 14, 2013.

Poured a cloudy reddish brown with a light tan head and some sticky lace. Good head retention. Nose has some dark fruits, grapes and raisin, and some gentle spicing. Taste has more dried dark fruits and grapes, some vinous notes, booze and some toffee-like sweetness. High carbonation that is a bit peppery in feel, and a heavy moderately boozy body. Long sweet finish. Solid but not great, I wouldn't have this as a first option in light of other BSDA's on the market.

Beer 2 of my flight. A 5oz pour

A - Poured a dark amber brown, clear in color that clears to a blotchy lace ring with some excellent lacing.

S - Light Belgium yeast and sugars, touch of caramel and toffee.

T - Very clean tasting yeast is very fruity with caramel and toffee leading to a slightly hoppy finish. ABV is well hidden with only a slight warming feeling.

M - Again medium bodied for sure. Love well made Belgium's

Overall I will have to be back to get another 5oz pour for 2 bucks. It drinks like heaven on tap a great strong ale.

Found this gem on a road-trip to France. A pleasant find, not a usual Belgian taste, but a good one! Not too harsh on the palate, I smell strong hints of zesty fruit from the glass (banana, strawberry, cherry), which comes alive in the taste! To me this sets it apart from the other Belgians that I try to keep on hand.

Let it warm in the glass for about 5 mins, it really does breathe well. A great taste, not too harsh, but you do taste a bit of the alcohol. The reviews I've read are a bit mixed, but I'm glad I pulled this one off the shelf. A great brew to end my long day at work. I'll definitely buy again if I can find it. Cheers!
