Appearance: It has a nice dark brown/amber color to it. It has a nice beige head that dies down quite fast and leaves almost no lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitly give out hints of dark fruit: mostly raspberries and cherries, definite grapes (similar to wine), alcohol, some spices, and some yeast.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a very sweet fruity flavor, mainly grapes, raspberries and cherries, some molasses, a touch of alcohol, light spices and some caramel.

Mouthfeel: It has medium carbonation with a sweet overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

From 11/25/11 notes. Poured from an 11.2 oz. bottle into a tulip.

a - Pours a dark mahogany brown color with two fingers of fluffy tan head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of dark fruits, molasses, sweet fruity malts, light alcohol, and light spices.

t - Tastes of sweet dark fruits, molasses, bready malts, booze, yeast, and light spice.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink for over 10% ABV.

o - Overall a very good Belgian dark ale. Lots of sweet dark fruits mixing with a little spice. Something I would definitely buy again.

A: Pours a hazy, cloudy dark burgundy-red liquid with a full 3-finger khaki colored head.

S: Typical dark fruits mixed with some light fruit for support. A strong whiff detects a significant shot of booze.

T: A strong blast of cherries, some fig, light molasses and some latent sweetness immediately washes across the palate at the first sip. This is really, really delicious stuff. A warming alcohol presence is apparent, but definitely not overpowering and does not detract from the flavor at all. Highest marks here.

M: Very high "coarse" carbonation. Not as finely carbonated as other Belgians. Gives the impression of a "lightness" to the beer's body as all of that CO2 is released into the mouth. I would have preferred a bit more creaminess. Finishes dry with almost no aftertaste.

O: An extremely well-crafted brew here and arguably my favorite in the BSDA category, if not for the price. At around half the cost, Trois Pistoles provides much more than half the enjoyment as this brew. Still, a high quality beer worthy of a solid "A" rating.

Purchased as a six pack at a local craft beer store in a christmas set with a tulip glass, and enjoyed from that tulip glass. Enjoyed with Thanksgiving turkey dinner!

A: Pours a deep ruby red with a massive kakhi head on it, which lingers for eons. Rich dense lacing coats the entire glass with each pull. The head never settles.

S: Smells of dense raspberry, mango, hay and toffee. The tulip glass really features the scents well.

T: Considerable amount of esters and alcoholic warmth with little noticeable hops bite. What hops are there, are merely the rythem guitar. Slight diacetyl lends to the toffee taste in the middle. Very warming and completely dangerous.

M: You'll have to drink through the head to get to the liquid. Some alcoholic bite, yet once the sting is gone and you reach the middle, a very enjoyable drink. Overcarbonated IMHO, but pleasing to drink.

O: An outstanding example of the style. This would be a great standard to judge others of this style against.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: Gulden Draak pours a slightly hazy brown ruby color with a modest, fast-fading tan cap. Not much lacing either.

Smell: Full dark fruits with a focus on raisin. Dark cherry and plum as well, as well as some molasses and toasted malts. Some rum notes in the back.

Taste: It starts sweet and stays sweet all the way through. The malt is full of molasses with a bit of rum flavor to it as well. Raisins, plums, some dark cherries, and some dates provide a nice dark fruit presence. There is a soft rum booziness throughout, which seems to help prevent the sweetness from becoming cloying.

Mouthfeel: There is a soft warming alcohol present throughout the sip. A fairly strong residual stickiness stays on the tongue and lips after each sip.

Overall: Whether it is the alcohol or something else that keeps the sweetness in check, I really enjoy this from start to finish.

330ml into Founders snifter.

A- Muddy swamp water pour with ruby highlights. Aggressive pour gave me a finger width off white head. Even hard swirls left me with very little. Lacing is spotty at best.

S- Slight rubbing alcohol mixed with chocolate, brown sugar, vanilla, figs and various other stone fruits. Yeasty like a doughnut.

T- Quite sweet with brown sugar and vanilla up front. Stone fruits and yeast in the back with a slight alcohol taste.

M- Medium bodied with slight prickly carbonation. Alcohol burn on the tongue and on the way down.

O- I'm really becoming a strong supporter of the BSDA, this one had wonderful potential but the alcohol being so out there in all aspects made me a little disappointed. It probably needs time to mellow out.
