Poured from a 750 mL into Duvel tulip
A - Beautiful gold color, slightly hazy. Mountainous soapy head from slow pour that settles to a 1/8 inch of foam. Sparse but tenacious lacing.
S - Very sugary sweet, fruit and honey. Some nice funkiness/yeastiness with a small amount of alcohol. Enticing.
T - Front is all cloying fruity malt and honey. Apricots and apples come to mind. Dry. Mid goes tart with a strong dose of hoppy bitterness at the finish. Delicious. Alcohol VERY well hidden, only shows when the ale approaches room temp.
M - Slick, vibrant carbonation but not as champagne-like as many Belgians I've had. Slightly oily. Alcohol warmth apparent in the back of the mouth.
D - If I didn't know it was 10.5% ABV I would be in serious trouble. Slight warming on the throat and in the stomach but no indication of it's strength otherwise.
Overall this is fabulous. Not as hoppy as other Belgian IPA's (Houblon Chouffe/De Ranke XX) but just as tasty. Went very well with a toasted baguette and brie sandwich.

Review taken many times over the last 5 years.
11.2oz(33cl/330ml) brown bottle. Awesome Van Steenberge bottle shape with plastic pirate inspired label covering entire bottle. I love the shapes of these bottles. Poured into a fat stemmed Belgian tulip.
A - hazy yellow golden in color. Thick, creamy and massive are words that best describe this lovely head leaving a very sticky ring of lace.
S - for starters this has a top shelf Belgian yeast aroma paired with banana, orange, bubblegum, and a faint whiff of sour apples. Belgian spices and a toasted bread like malt balance the aroma. Maybe a hint of creamy vanilla as it warms.
T - this is a classic yet original flavor. Light fruitiness of ripe banana and orange with the perfect pairings of Belgian spices. Malts have a toasted bread character same as the nose and add an authentic Belgian yeast and its citrus notes just pop.
M - medium to full body and especially smooth feel. Texture and thickness play a key role in Piraat's ability to be a real winner. It almost comes off as too easy to drink but overall its just a great feel and brew in general.
O - piraat ale is a classic for me. One of the first true Belgian ales that got me hooked to the world of craft beer and Belgium in general. A true genius recipe that still plays a major role in my craft beer life. It's always there and will never let you down. This is something people will be drinking til the end of time

Long time want fulfilled by Johnnnnieee. Thanx a ton, man
Into a chalice.
A: golden red almost amber colored body with a slim half finger white foamy head that dies within less than a minute, adequate sticky lacing graces the sides of the glass
S: spiciness up front with a deep malty breadiness coming through strong and then I get some light coriander and clove as well as some peppery tones, light citrus enters in as it warms
T: malty sweet breadiness with a decent blend of citrusy flavors spreading around my mouth; spicy yet sweet aftertaste with sweet sticky finish
M: light to medium, somewhat sessionable surprisingly enough for 10.5% - big wow from me, carbonation is fairly smooth for a Belgian IPA though I think I like how everything comes across and coats my mouth and tongue
O: wow, I actually wasn't expecting this one to be this good and am thinking would go great with a pepperoni pizza to even grilled shrimp. My mind is racing right now with all of the pairings I could do with this. I wish it was in my distro.
